At a glance
Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) holds an unparalleled place in the Quran, mentioned 136 times across 34 surahs. His life is an extraordinary journey that illustrates divine providence at every turn: from his miraculous preservation as an infant floating on the Nile to his upbringing inside the very palace of the tyrant Pharaoh. Prepared and nurtured under Allah's watchful eye, he was elevated to speak directly with his Lord and entrusted with liberating the Children of Israel.
His mission was defined by resolute faith, moral nobility, and unyielding courage in the face of brutal oppression. Moses confronted an arrogant ruler claiming divinity, dismantled the illusions of royal sorcery, and shepherded an insecure and disputatious nation through wilderness and miracle alike. Through all of his human vulnerability and towering resolve, Moses embodies complete reliance upon Allah, showing believers how sincere trust overcomes apparent impossibility.

His characteristics and morals
From the paper: «صفاته وأخلاقه عليه السلام»
The Quran does not delve into the lineage of Moses, peace be upon him, except to affirm that Aaron was his brother and that his era preceded Prophet David Al-Baqarah 2:246. Chronologically, he lived during the severe subjugation of the Children of Israel under Pharaoh Al-Qasas 28:3-6, where infant boys were slaughtered and women spared Al-Baqarah 2:49, Al-A'raf 7:141.
Moses was granted exceptional honor: Allah spoke directly to him An-Nisa 4:164, brought him near for intimate discourse Maryam 19:51-53, cast divine love upon him Ta-Ha 20:39, and made him among the determined messengers of firm resolve Al-Ahqaf 46:35.
Physically, he possessed exceptional strength and vigor Al-Qasas 28:15. His moral character was distinguished by:
- Chivalry and honor: He swiftly assisted the wronged man in Egypt Al-Qasas 28:15 and selflessly watered the flock for the two daughters of the elderly sage in Midian without asking for pay Al-Qasas 28:24.
- Faithfulness: He punctually and faithfully fulfilled his long pastoral agreement in Midian Al-Qasas 28:27-29.
- Sound reasoning and courage: He dismantled Pharaoh's haughty challenges through clear environmental examples Ta-Ha 20:51-54 and unflinching logic Ash-Shu'ara 26:29-31.
- Devotion and reliance: He constantly turned to Allah in prayer Al-A'raf 7:155-156, urged his followers to place complete trust in their Creator Yunus 10:84-89, and proclaimed unshakable certainty at the sea Ash-Shu'ara 26:62.
- Humility in seeking knowledge: He journeyed tirelessly to learn under the righteous servant Al-Kahf 18:65-70.
- Forbidding wrong: He could not stay silent when witnessing apparent injustice Al-Kahf 18:71-77.
- Formidable willpower: He preserved high resolve across life's endless tests Al-Ma'idah 5:21-22, Al-Kahf 18:60.

Moses before prophethood
From the paper: «موسى عليه السلام قبل النبوة»
Moses was born under dark, perilous circumstances as Pharaoh systematically executed Hebrew male infants. By divine inspiration, his mother nursed him and cast him into the river within a chest, comforted by Allah's promise that he would be returned and made a messenger Al-Qasas 28:7, Ta-Ha 20:37-39.
Guided by divine providence, Pharaoh's household retrieved him Al-Qasas 28:8. Pharaoh's wife embraced him with deep love Al-Qasas 28:9, becoming a lasting model of faith At-Tahrim 66:11. When Moses refused all wet nurses Al-Qasas 28:12, his sister discreetly directed the royal family to his biological mother, returning him safely so her heart would be at peace Al-Qasas 28:10, Al-Qasas 28:13, Ta-Ha 20:40.
Upon reaching adulthood and being gifted sound judgment Al-Qasas 28:14, Moses entered the city unnoticed and found an Israelite fighting an Egyptian Al-Qasas 28:15. Moses struck the Egyptian to defend his countryman, unintentionally killing him. Grieved and repentant, he confessed this as a snare of Satan, sought Allah's forgiveness, and pledged never to assist wrongdoers Al-Qasas 28:15-17.
The next day, discovering the same man involved in another altercation, Moses recognized his errant nature Al-Qasas 28:18-19. Warned that the royal assembly was plotting his execution Al-Qasas 28:20, Moses fled Egypt in fearful vigilance, praying for deliverance Al-Qasas 28:21, Ta-Ha 20:40.
He trekked across the desert toward Midian Al-Qasas 28:22. Arriving at its water, he chivalrously assisted two women unable to water their flock amidst the herdsmen Al-Qasas 28:23-24. Their father welcomed Moses Al-Qasas 28:25, dispelled his fears, and employed him in marriage for eight or ten years of service Al-Qasas 28:27-28.

Commissioning of Moses with prophethood
From the paper: «تكليف موسى عليه السلام بالنبوة»
Having fulfilled his agreed term in Midian, Moses traveled with his family past Mount Tur in Sinai Al-Qasas 28:29. Seeing fire in the cold desert night, he sought guidance and embers for warmth Ta-Ha 20:10, An-Naml 27:7.
There, Allah called to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa, commanding him to remove his footwear and declaring His absolute oneness and the obligation of prayer Ta-Ha 20:11-16. When Moses threw down his staff, it became a slithering snake, causing him to retreat in natural dread before Allah calmed him, assuring him of safety Al-Qasas 28:31, Ta-Ha 20:21, An-Naml 27:10.
Allah granted him two decisive proofs: the staff and his hand emerging radiantly white without harm Al-Qasas 28:32, part of nine clear signs Al-Isra 17:101, An-Naml 27:12. Moses was charged to confront Pharaoh and his transgressing elite Ash-Shu'ara 26:10-11.
Acknowledging human trepidation, Moses prayed for an expanded chest, eased affairs, and the unloosening of fear or speech impediment so his words would be understood Ta-Ha 20:25-28. He asked for his eloquent brother Aaron to share his burden, enhance their worship, and serve as his supporting minister Ta-Ha 20:29-35, a request Allah granted at once Ta-Ha 20:36, Al-Qasas 28:35, Maryam 19:53.
Moses voiced his fear of being killed for the slain Egyptian Ash-Shu'ara 26:14, Al-Qasas 28:33, and both brothers worried about royal tyranny, but Allah reassured them of His hearing, seeing presence Ta-Ha 20:45-46.

His call to Pharaoh and his people
From the paper: «دعوته عليه السلام لفرعون وقومه»
Moses presented his mission to Pharaoh, centered on two core objectives: proclaiming the oneness of Allah and securing the release of the enslaved Israelites Ta-Ha 20:47-48, Ash-Shu'ara 26:15-17, Al-A'raf 7:104-105. Pharaoh reacted with staggering arrogance, denying any god besides himself Al-Qasas 28:38, claiming supreme lordship An-Nazi'at 79:23-24, boasting over Egypt's rivers Az-Zukhruf 43:51, and demanding a tower to inspect the heavens Ghafir 40:36-37.
Moses adapted his methods with wisdom:
- Partnering in ministry: He mobilized Aaron's distinct verbal eloquence to present and defend the message Ta-Ha 20:29-35.
- Balancing gentleness and firmness: He initiated the call with gentle speech to invite reflection Ta-Ha 20:44, An-Nazi'at 79:18-19. Yet when Pharaoh persisted in stubborn denial, Moses met threats with uncompromising warnings of ruin Al-Isra 17:102.
- Rational dialogue: He answered Pharaoh's theological queries by describing the Lord of the heavens and earth Who grants every creation its nature Ash-Shu'ara 26:23-28, Ta-Ha 20:49-55.
Pharaoh and his corrupt court, desperate to protect their power, accused Moses of madness, falsehood, and conspiring to seize Egypt Ash-Shu'ara 26:34-37, Ghafir 40:23-24, Adh-Dhariyat 51:38-39. They renewed vows to murder Hebrew boys Al-A'raf 7:127, Ghafir 40:25. Moses held firm against threats of imprisonment Ash-Shu'ara 26:29-31, manifested the signs of the staff and white hand Ash-Shu'ara 26:32-33, and supplicated against the wealth of the oppressors Yunus 10:88, while urging his frightened followers toward prayer and patient reliance Yunus 10:83-89.
«فإرسال موسى وهارون عليهما السلام إلى فرعون كما تشير الآيات كان لغرضين: دعوته وقومه إلى الإيمان بألوهية الله الخالق بدلا من عبادة الفراعين، وتخليص بني إسرائيل من أسر فرعون وعذاباته.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Moses and the magicians
From the paper: «موسى عليه السلام والسحرة»
To break Pharaoh's stubbornness, Allah equipped Moses with decisive signs An-Nisa 4:46, prominently enumerated as nine miracles Al-Isra 17:101, An-Naml 27:12. Beyond the staff and radiant hand Al-Qasas 28:32, Egypt was struck with plagues: floods, locusts, lice, frogs, and blood Al-A'raf 7:132-133. Signs among the Israelites included water bursting from the struck rock Al-Baqarah 2:60, shade from clouds, manna and quails Al-Baqarah 2:57, the reviving of the slain man Al-Baqarah 2:72-74, and the raising of the mountain Al-A'raf 7:171.
Pharaoh convened Egypt's premier sorcerers on the festive Day of Adornment Ta-Ha 20:59, offering wealth and high royal favor Ash-Shu'ara 26:41-42. The sorcerers cast their ropes and sticks, bewitching onlookers' eyes and making them appear to slither Al-A'raf 7:116, Ta-Ha 20:66.
Moses felt an instinctive trace of apprehension, but Allah fortified him, bidding him to cast down his staff Ta-Ha 20:67-69. Instantly, his staff became a true serpent that devoured their phantoms Al-A'raf 7:117, Yunus 10:81-82.
Recognizing that Moses's miracle was divine and beyond human craft, the sorcerers fell into prostration, openly testifying faith in the Lord of Moses and Aaron Al-A'raf 7:118-122. Enraged, Pharaoh accused them of collusion and threatened them with cross-amputation and crucifixion Al-A'raf 7:123, Ta-Ha 20:71. The converted sorcerers stood entirely unmoved, declaring that worldly torture could only affect this fleeting life, and prayed for steadfastness and forgiveness Ash-Shu'ara 26:49-51, Al-A'raf 7:126, Ta-Ha 20:72-76.

Deliverance of Moses and those with him
From the paper: «نجاة موسى عليه السلام ومن معه»
Even after experiencing repeated afflictions, Pharaoh and his grandees perpetually reneged on their pledges to release the Israelites Al-A'raf 7:130-135, An-Naml 27:14. Amidst royal threats to kill Moses Ghafir 40:26, a believing man from Pharaoh's family bravely spoke out, using rational persuasion to warn his people of past destructions Ghafir 40:28-34. Moses urged his oppressed followers to be patient and seek Allah's aid Al-A'raf 7:128-129, though only a youthful group dared openly profess belief out of fear Yunus 10:83.
Allah commanded Moses to lead His servants out of Egypt by night Ad-Dukhan 44:23. At dawn, Pharaoh and his army pursued them with aggressive malice Ash-Shu'ara 26:60, Yunus 10:90. Trapped before the water, Moses's companions cried out that they were doomed, but Moses proclaimed with absolute conviction that his Lord was with him and would guide him Ash-Shu'ara 26:61-62.
Commanded to strike the water, the sea parted into massive, towered walls, leaving a dry path Ta-Ha 20:77, Ash-Shu'ara 26:63. Moses and his people crossed safely. When Pharaoh and his soldiers plunged into the corridor, the waters collapsed, drowning them Ad-Dukhan 44:24.
In his final breath, Pharaoh claimed faith, but his deathbed repentance was rejected Yunus 10:90-91. His corpse was preserved as a sign for future generations Yunus 10:92, fulfilling Allah's eternal promise to deliver the oppressed and humiliate arrogant despots Al-Qasas 28:5, An-Nur 24:55.

Moses and seeing his Lord
From the paper: «موسى عليه السلام ورؤية ربه»
Moses was summoned to a forty-night appointment on Mount Sinai, appointing Aaron to oversee the people Al-A'raf 7:142. Overwhelmed by love and the honor of hearing Allah speak, Moses yearned for more, saying, "My Lord, show me Yourself that I may look upon You." Allah informed him that he could not bear it, directing him to look at the mountain: if it stood firm upon divine manifestation, he would see Him Al-A'raf 7:143.
When Allah revealed His majesty to the mountain, it shattered into dust, and Moses collapsed unconscious. Upon awakening, Moses glorified Allah, repented for his bold request, and affirmed his foremost faith Al-A'raf 7:143.
Allah gave Moses the inscribed tablets containing comprehensive guidance Al-A'raf 7:144-145, Al-Ma'idah 5:44. Yet during his absence, the Israelites fell into idolatry, fashioning a golden calf under the instigation of the Samiri Ta-Ha 20:83-85, Al-A'raf 7:148.
Returning in severe grief and wrath Ta-Ha 20:86-91, Moses reprimanded the people, threw down the tablets, and seized Aaron's beard and head Al-A'raf 7:150, Ta-Ha 20:92-93. Aaron pleaded that the people had overpowered him and that he feared causing division Al-A'raf 7:150, Ta-Ha 20:94. Moses then confronted the Samiri, burned the idol, cast its dust into the sea Ta-Ha 20:95-97, recovered the tablets Al-A'raf 7:154, and chose seventy elders to seek Allah's forgiveness Al-A'raf 7:155.

Moses and the righteous servant
From the paper: «موسى عليه السلام والعبد الصالح»
When Moses was asked if anyone possessed greater knowledge than he, he answered in the negative, prompting Allah to direct him to a righteous servant at the junction of the two seas Al-Kahf 18:60. Accompanied by his young companion, Moses traveled patiently until their provision, a fish, miraculously slipped into the sea Al-Kahf 18:61-64.
Meeting the servant, endowed with special mercy and direct knowledge Al-Kahf 18:65, Moses humbly asked permission to follow him to learn Al-Kahf 18:66. The teacher cautioned that Moses would lack patience regarding matters beyond his knowledge Al-Kahf 18:67-68, yet Moses promised obedience Al-Kahf 18:69 under the condition that he ask no questions until explained Al-Kahf 18:70.
During their journey, three unsettling events occurred:
- The teacher damaged a boat whose poor crew carried them freely, prompting Moses's protest Al-Kahf 18:71-73.
- The teacher killed an apparently innocent youth, causing Moses to rebuke him sharply Al-Kahf 18:74-76.
- Arriving at an inhospitable town, the teacher repaired a crumbling wall without accepting wages, leading Moses to suggest taking payment Al-Kahf 18:77.
This prompted their parting Al-Kahf 18:78. The servant then unveiled the hidden wisdom Al-Kahf 18:79-82: the boat was damaged to protect it from a tyrannical king seizing ships; the boy was taken to safeguard his righteous parents from corruption; and the wall concealed an inheritance for two orphans left by their righteous father.
Moses realized the profound limits of outward human observation when contrasted with divine wisdom.

Takeaways
Divine Protection Transcends Material Odds
Moses was saved from drowning in the river and shielded inside the palace of the tyrant who wanted him dead Ta-Ha 20:39. When you place your trust in Allah and surrender to His plan, He provides shelter and preservation through avenues that seem entirely impossible to human calculation.
Chivalry Expects No Earthly Compensation
Upon seeing two women unable to water their sheep in Midian, Moses stepped forward without hesitation, performed the strenuous task, and withdrew humbly to the shade to beseech Allah Al-Qasas 28:24. Noble character acts out of pure compassion without expecting worldly praise or transaction.
Natural Fear Does Not Negate True Faith
Moses experienced human dread multiple times: when his staff turned into a snake Al-Qasas 28:31, when fleeing Egypt Al-Qasas 28:21, and when confronting royal magicians Ta-Ha 20:67. Fear is a normal human trait, but spiritual maturity means refusing to let anxiety derail your devotion and trust in Allah.
Humble Inquiry Is Essential for Spiritual Growth
Despite holding the lofty status of an arch-prophet who spoke directly with Allah, Moses humbly placed himself as an obedient student before a knowledgeable servant Al-Kahf 18:66. Recognizing that one's personal knowledge is minuscule before Allah's vast wisdom is the hallmark of true spiritual elevation.
Reflect
- When faced with circumstances that seem completely hopeless, how can Moses's rescue as an infant on the river inspire you to trust Allah's unseen hand?
- Moses regularly turned to Allah in prayer before and after making crucial life decisions. How can you weave sincere supplication into your moments of pressure and anxiety?
- Where in your life are you judging events solely by their surface appearance, and how does the story of the righteous servant remind you of Allah's hidden mercy?
- How can you develop the selfless chivalry that Moses displayed in Midian when you encounter people in need around you?
