Surah Al-Kahf 18:60 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

Meccan · Verse 60 of 110

English: Moses said to his servant, ‘I will not rest until I reach the place where the two seas meet, even if it takes me years!’

Meaning & Reflection

'And when Musa said to his young servant: I will not give up until I reach the junction of the two seas, though I journey for a long time.' al-Saadi and Ibn Ashur note the humility at the root of the whole story — Musa, a great prophet given the Torah, sets out on an arduous journey because he has learned there is knowledge he still lacks. Ask yourself: the man who spoke with God directly is here a *student*, willing to travel far and long to learn from another. It is a rebuke to my intellectual complacency: if Musa was not too great to seek more knowledge, my sense that I've 'learned enough' about my faith, my flaws, or my life is simply pride. Where have I stopped seeking — assuming I already know — when the greatest of teachers was still, humbly, on the road looking for a teacher of his own?

Grounded in classical tafsir: al-Saadi, Ibn Ashur, al-Biqa'i.
