At a glance

Throughout human history, people have needed divine revelation to illuminate their path. Human intellect, senses, and experience, while valuable, are limited and prone to passion, doubt, and conjecture. To rescue humanity from spiritual darkness and guide them toward the light of pure monotheism, Allah sent prophets supported by heavenly scriptures.

Every revealed scripture emerged from the same divine niche, pursuing the singular purpose of establishing the pure worship of Allah, teaching righteous conduct, and instituting justice. The Quran honors this unbroken chain of guidance by acknowledging previous scriptures, including the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the scrolls given to Ibrahim and Musa.

As the final, fully preserved revelation, the Quran confirms the essential truths of earlier scriptures while acting as their guardian, judge, and seal. Believing in every revealed book is a fundamental pillar of faith that unites believers across prophetic history under one divine standard.

Key verses

  1. Al-Ma'idah 5:44-46: These verses explain that the original Torah and Gospel were revealed with light and guidance, serving as laws by which earlier prophets and righteous scholars governed.
  2. Al-Ma'idah 5:48: This verse describes the Quran as confirming earlier scriptures and acting as an authoritative guardian over them, setting the ultimate standard for divine truth.
  3. Al-A'la 87:14-19: These verses show that core spiritual teachings, such as purifying the soul, establishing prayer, and prioritizing the hereafter over worldly life, were inscribed in the earliest scrolls given to Ibrahim and Musa.
  4. Al-Anbiya 21:48: This verse highlights that the scripture given to Musa and Harun was a criterion that separated truth from falsehood, providing light and reminder for the God-fearing.
  5. Ali 'Imran 3:3: This verse affirms that Allah revealed the Quran in truth to confirm previous revelations, having sent the Torah and the Gospel earlier as guidance for humanity.
  6. An-Najm 53:36: This verse refers to the profound truths found in the scrolls of Musa, reminding mankind of fundamental realities of divine justice and individual moral accountability.
  7. Al-A'raf 7:145: This verse recounts how Allah inscribed lessons and legal details on the tablets for Musa, commanding his people to uphold its instructions with firm resolve and devotion.
  8. Al-A'raf 7:157: This verse shows that both the Torah and the Gospel contained clear prophecies regarding the unlettered prophet Muhammad, urging their followers to believe in him and assist his message.

Wisdom behind revealing the scriptures

From the paper: «

Human beings cannot safely navigate life relying merely on intellect, fluctuating desires, or limited experience. Sincere guidance requires divine light. For this reason, Allah sent down scriptures throughout history to lead mankind out of the depths of disbelief, doubt, and ignorance into the radiant illumination of divine oneness Al-Baqarah 2:257. As seen with Musa, every prophetic mission aimed to bring people into this saving light Ibrahim 14:5, an aim mirrored across all revelations 3:184}, {6:91}, {14:1}, {57:9}, {65:11.

Beyond inner illumination, scriptures act as a decisive balance: a furqan that distinguishes right from wrong and establishes practical justice among people 57:25}, {42:17. Both the Torah given to Musa and the Quran given to Muhammad bear this title because they draw clear moral boundaries 2:53}, {21:48}, {3:3-4}, {25:1.

Ultimately, revelations detail how servants worship their Lord Adh-Dhariyat 51:56. Without divine instruction, people would invent contradictory religious rituals. Revelation provides structured laws, worship, and social dealings 16:36}, {42:13. While practical legal rulings varied across historical eras to fit distinct circumstances, the foundational roots of faith, such as monotheism, prayer, and charity, have remained unbroken across all divine messages.

  • The Psalms (al-Zabur): Bestowed upon Dawud 4:163}, {17:55, the Psalms offered moving exhortations and the hopeful promise that righteous servants inherit the earth Al-Anbiya 21:105-107.

  • The Quran: As the final revelation, it absorbs and completes the fundamental aims of all earlier books Al-Ma'idah 5:48. Endowed with enduring literary and legal miraculousness, Allah personally safeguarded it from corruption 2:2}, {4:82}, {41:41-42.
  • The Scrolls of Ibrahim and Musa: Mentioned in the earliest revelations 53:36-56}, {87:14-19, they emphasized individual moral responsibility, constant remembrance of Allah, and the superiority of the afterlife over fleeting worldly pleasures.
«فالتوراة منزلةٌ من عند الله تعالى بالهدى والنور، وهي شريعة الله تعالى التي حكم بها موسى عليه السلام ومن بعده من الأنبياء عليهم السلام، وعلى نهجهم سار الربانيون والأحبار، فأضاءوا بها دروب الحياة، ونعموا في ظلالها بحلاوة العدل وروح الإنصاف.»

Revealed scriptures and the stance toward them

From the paper: «

Believing in all revealed scriptures is an indispensable pillar of Islamic faith 2:285}, {4:136. A believer does not make arbitrary distinctions between prophets or their original messages 2:136}, {42:15. Every successive revelation confirmed the true divine message that preceded it 5:46-47}, {5:48, and Allah took a binding covenant from all prophets to believe in and support the messengers who followed them Ali 'Imran 3:81.

Furthermore, each prophet and community was strictly charged to judge by and submit to their revealed scripture 57:25}, {2:213. The prophets of Bani Israil, along with their scholars and jurists, were entrusted to guard and apply the Torah without fear of people or compromising for temporary gain Al-Ma'idah 5:44. Taking divine guidance requires determination and strength 7:145}, {19:12}, {7:171. The Quran rebukes those who turned away from their own revealed texts despite being summoned to their verdicts Ali 'Imran 3:23-24.

In the same way, the followers of the Gospel were commanded to judge by what Allah revealed therein Al-Ma'idah 5:46-47. True adherence to these texts necessarily entails accepting the final Prophet, because both the Torah and the Gospel contained vivid prophecies of Muhammad, commanding their communities to recognize and support his universal mission 7:156-157}, {48:29}, {61:6.

«فأمر الله بالإيمان الكامل والتصديق التام بكل ما أنزل على أنبيائه، دون تفريقٍ بين نبيٍ ونبيٍ، وأن نعلن التسليم المطلق له تعالى.»

The Quran and the scriptures revealed before it

From the paper: «

The Quran holds a unique position toward all earlier revelations. First, it comes as a verifier (musaddiq), confirming their divine origin, their enduring moral truths, and their prophecies regarding the unlettered prophet 5:48}, {37:37}, {4:47}, {2:41}, {2:89}, {2:97}, {12:111. Its presence validates the historical truthfulness of past prophets.

Second, the Quran is an authoritative guardian and overseer (muhaymin) over earlier texts Al-Ma'idah 5:48. Being perfectly preserved by Allah Al-Hijr 15:9, it acts as a trustworthy witness, correcting altered passages, clarifying hidden verses, and setting aside obsolete legal rulings 6:91}, {3:93-95}, {5:41.

Third, the Quran clarifies matters in which earlier communities fell into dispute or concealed the truth 5:15}, {5:19}, {16:63-64. It delivers decisive clarity regarding deep historical disagreements, including theological controversies surrounding Prophet Isa and past events Al-Ma'idah 5:15.

Consequently, the Quran obliges all humanity, including the followers of earlier scriptures, to embrace its final message 3:19}, {3:85. When sincere scholars and monks encountered the Quran, recognizing its harmony with their original scriptures, they rejoiced and wept tears of deep conviction and humility 13:36}, {17:105-109}, {5:82-85.

«فالقرآن حافظٌ أمينٌ لها، حفظ لنا هذه الكتب فحدثنا عنها، وهو حافظٌ لها يكشف عما خالطها من تحريفٍ وداخلها من زيفٍ، فيقوم ما اعتراها من اعوجاجٍ، وينفي ما لابسها من أباطيل وخرافاتٍ.»

Takeaways

  1. Seek Light Over Cultural Conjecture

Human intellect and experience alone are insufficient guides for spiritual truth and moral justice. Rely directly on divine revelation to illuminate your everyday choices and dispel confusing doubts.

  2. Respect the Continuity of Divine Truth

All heavenly revelations share one common source and purpose. Honor the brotherhood of prophets and understand that the core message of monotheism and moral accountability has remained consistent throughout history.

  3. Embrace Divine Law with Determination

Believers are commanded to take divine commands with firm resolve and strength, not picking and choosing based on worldly comfort or social convenience.

  4. Let the Quran Be Your Ultimate Criterion

Because the Quran is the preserved, authoritative guardian (muhaymin) over all religious truth, use its principles to weigh competing worldviews and evaluate moral questions.

Reflect

  • When faced with moral uncertainty or societal pressure, do you turn first to cultural trends or to the guidance of divine revelation?
  • How does knowing that every prophet taught the same core message strengthen your connection to past prophets like Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa?
  • In what areas of your daily religious life do you need to take divine commands with greater seriousness and resolve?
