At a glance

Faith in the Quran is far more than passive intellectual assent; it is a firm, unwavering conviction that takes root in the heart, speaks through the tongue, and reveals itself in righteous action. At its linguistic core, it carries the profound sense of safety and tranquility, reminding us that true security is found only when the heart rests in total devotion to its Creator.

Throughout the sacred text, faith is almost inseparable from good deeds. Belief serves as the solid foundation upon which righteous character is built, while deeds are the living fruit that prove the truth of that foundation. As you nurture your faith through obedience and reflection, it grows stronger and deeper, shaping your daily decisions, softening your character, and providing inner calm amidst life's inevitable tests.

Ultimately, embracing faith is about entering into a transformative relationship with Allah. It elevates the human condition, dispelling anxiety and guiding both the individual and community toward justice, blessing, and everlasting reward in the life to come.

Key verses

  1. An-Nisa 4:136: Calls believers to complete, unwavering faith in Allah, His Messenger, and all revealed scriptures, warning that denying even a single pillar leads one far astray.
  2. Al-Muddaththir 74:31: Shows that divine tests and revelations serve to deepen and increase the faith of the believers, while emphasizing that only Allah knows the vast expanse of His forces.
  3. Al-Hashr 59:23: Reveals that al-Mu'min is one of the beautiful names of Allah, affirming that He testifies to His own oneness, confirms the truth of His messengers, and grants ultimate safety to His creation.

Belief in Allah Almighty

From the paper: «

Belief in Allah is the bedrock of all faith. It entails absolute affirmation of His existence, His unique lordship, His exclusive right to worship, and His perfect names and attributes. The Quran addresses the human intellect and primordial nature (fitrah), reminding us through the creation of the heavens and earth that every existing thing must have a Wise Creator At-Tur 52:35-36, Al-A'raf 7:185, Ar-Rum 30:30.

At the core of this belief is uncompromised monotheism (tawhid). This truth formed the essence of every prophet's call: to dedicate worship solely to Allah and reject all false deities Al-Anbiya 21:25, Az-Zukhruf 43:45. Surah al-Ikhlas encapsulates this reality, declaring His singular perfection and self-sufficiency.

Faith in Allah also requires submitting to His divine legislation. As the sole Creator and Sovereign, Allah possesses the exclusive right to command and guide human conduct Al-Baqarah 2:168, An-Nisa 4:65. Furthermore, the Quran pairs belief with righteous deeds dozens of times Al-Baqarah 2:285. True faith is not a mere claim; it is the seed from which all virtuous actions grow, spanning worship, charity, community service, and personal integrity.

Allah also names Himself al-Mu'min Al-Hashr 59:23. He is the One who bears witness to His own oneness Ali 'Imran 3:18, confirms His messengers with undeniable signs, and grants absolute safety and peace to His servants.

Belief in the angels

From the paper: «

Belief in the angels is an essential pillar of faith, established clearly across the Quran Al-Baqarah 2:285, An-Nisa 4:136. Created from light before the creation of humankind Al-Baqarah 2:30, angels are noble, luminous beings who inhabit the heavens and never disobey Allah's commands, ceaselessly glorifying and worshiping Him An-Nahl 16:50, At-Tahrim 66:6, Al-A'raf 7:206.

Angels are entrusted with executing divine commands throughout the cosmos An-Nazi'at 79:5. They possess distinct forms, including varying numbers of wings Fatir 35:1, An-Najm 53:11, and have been granted the ability to appear in human form when carrying out divine missions, as when Gabriel came to Maryam Maryam 19:17 and when angels visited Ibrahim.

Their connection to believers is tender and constant. Angels are assigned to protect individuals throughout life Ar-Ra'd 13:11 and meticulously record every word and deed Al-Infitar 82:10-11. The bearers of the Throne pray for the believers' forgiveness, guidance, and protection from harm Ghafir 40:7-9. In times of hardship and righteous struggle, angels bring reassurance and fortitude Al-Anfal 8:12. Embracing faith in angels enriches our awareness of the unseen world and inspires modesty, comfort, and diligence in devotion.

Belief in the scriptures

From the paper: «

A believer must accept all the scriptures sent down by Allah to His prophets, whether named specifically in revelation or not An-Nisa 4:136, Al-Baqarah 2:213. To accept some books while rejecting others is a denial of divine guidance altogether.

The Quran explicitly honors previous scriptures: the Torah given to Musa, filled with guidance and light Al-Ma'idah 5:44; the Gospel given to Isa, confirming earlier truth and offering moral admonition Al-Ma'idah 5:46; the Psalms revealed to Dawud An-Nisa 4:163; and the ancient scrolls granted to Ibrahim and Musa Al-A'la 87:18-19. All these divine messages shared the same core purpose: calling mankind to the exclusive worship of the one true God.

The Quran stands as the supreme and final revelation, acting as a guardian (muhaymin) over all preceding scriptures Al-Ma'idah 5:48. It confirms their authentic origin while serving as the eternal benchmark for truth and law. Unlike earlier books that were subject to human alteration, Allah Himself pledged to preserve the Quran from any loss, addition, or change Al-Hijr 15:9. Believing in the Quran requires studying its guidance, following its commands, avoiding its prohibitions, and anchoring our worldview in its timeless message.

Volume 3

Belief in the messengers and prophets

From the paper: «

Allah in His mercy dispatched messengers to every community to teach good, warn against evil, and eliminate any excuse on the Day of Judgment Yunus 10:47, Fatir 35:24, An-Nisa 4:165. The Quran mentions twenty-five prophets by name, highlighting their lineage and virtues Al-An'am 6:83-86, Hud 11:50, Al-A'raf 7:73, Al-Ankabut 29:36, while confirming that many other prophets were sent whose names were not detailed An-Nisa 4:164.

Among them are the five messengers of resolute resolve (ulu al-`azm): Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, and Muhammad Al-Ahzab 33:7. While Allah favored certain prophets over others in honor and speech Al-Baqarah 2:253, believers make no distinction between them in affirming their truthfulness Ali 'Imran 3:84, An-Nisa 4:150.

The messengers were mortal men who ate food, walked through markets, and had families Yusuf 12:109, Al-Furqan 25:20, Ar-Ra'd 13:38. They possessed no independent power to benefit or harm Al-A'raf 7:188 and endured intense persecution with patience until divine victory arrived Al-An'am 6:34. Prophet Muhammad stands as the final messenger sent not just to a single people, but to all humanity and the jinn Al-A'raf 7:158, Al-Ahqaf 46:31, calling us to live by his preserved exemplary path.

«وهو الاعتقاد الجازم بأن الله تعالى بعث في كل أمة رسولًا منهم، يدلهم على الخير ويحذرهم من الشر رحمة بهم.»

Belief in the Last Day

From the paper: «

Belief in the Last Day is frequently paired with belief in Allah throughout the Quran Al-Baqarah 2:177, An-Naml 27:3, demonstrating its vital role in holding human conscience accountable. Denying this Day distorts all moral priorities, leading to tyranny and unchecked attachment to worldly pursuits An-Naml 27:4, An-Nazi'at 79:37-41.

To impress its reality upon the human heart, the Quran names seventeen chapters after the Day of Judgment and its cosmic portents. The Hour is inevitable Al-Hajj 22:7, Ghafir 40:59, marked by the cosmic trumpet blown by Israfil that fells all creation, followed by the resurrection trumpet that awakens humanity to stand before their Lord Az-Zumar 39:68.

On that Day, the earth and heavens will be completely transformed Ibrahim 14:48, Ta-Ha 20:105-108. Records of human deeds will be distributed with precise justice Al-Isra 17:13-14. Witnesses will testify: prophets regarding their delivery of truth An-Nisa 4:41, angels regarding recorded actions Qaf 50:21, the earth itself Az-Zalzalah 99:4, and even an individual's own bodily limbs Ya-Sin 36:65, An-Nur 24:24, Fussilat 41:20-21.

The scales of divine justice will weigh every particle of good and bad Al-Anbiya 21:47, Al-Qari'ah 101:6-11. Ultimately, creation divides into two eternal homes: the boundless, ever-lasting delight of Paradise promised to the righteous Al-Baqarah 2:25, Muhammad 47:15, and the profound sorrow and torment of Hell for those who persisted in arrogance and disbelief Muhammad 47:15, Al-Hajj 22:19-24.

Volume 3

Belief in divine decree

From the paper: «

Belief in divine decree (qadar) requires wholehearted acceptance of four interconnected stages: Allah's comprehensive knowledge of all things At-Talaq 65:12; His recording of everything in the Preserved Tablet before creation Al-Hajj 22:70, Ya-Sin 36:12; His effective, sovereign will Ya-Sin 36:82, At-Takwir 81:29; and His direct creation of all that exists, including human actions Az-Zumar 39:62, As-Saffat 37:96.

The Quran distinguishes between universal decree (al-qadar al-kawni), which governs physical laws beyond human control An-Nahl 16:40, and legislative decree (al-qadar al-tashri`i), where Allah commands moral obedience while granting human beings real choice Al-Baqarah 2:216, An-Nisa 4:19. This intentional gift of free will is the exact ground upon which personal accountability and reward rest.

Consequently, the Quran forcefully dismantles the fatalistic excuse of justifying sin through divine decree Al-An'am 6:148, An-Nahl 16:35. Claiming that destiny compelled one to transgress contradicts the very sending of messengers and revealed laws. While human understanding remains far too limited to grasp every hidden mystery behind Allah's decree Al-Baqarah 2:255, Al-Kahf 18:65, the believer trusts that Allah's planning is wholly founded upon supreme wisdom, justice, and mercy.

The increase, decrease, and deficiency of faith

From the paper: «

According to the vast consensus of Quranic scholars, faith is dynamic: it increases through sincere acts of obedience, contemplation, and patient endurance, and decreases through neglect and sin Muhammad 47:17, Maryam 19:76, Al-Anfal 8:2, Ali 'Imran 3:173. Reflecting upon the verses of the Quran and striving in righteous deeds continually refines conviction and deepens inner serenity Al-Kahf 18:13, Al-Ahzab 33:22.

The Quran also speaks of "insufficient faith" as a deficient, superficial belief that selectively accepts some truths while rejecting others An-Nisa 4:46. Real faith, however, reaches the depth of the soul and brings about radical transformation.

This transformative power is strikingly illustrated in the story of Pharaoh's magicians. Initially, they arrived entirely motivated by worldly prestige, wealth, and royal favor Al-A'raf 7:113-114, even swearing oaths by Pharaoh's supposed glory Ash-Shu'ara 26:44. Yet, the moment divine truth illuminated their hearts, they stood utterly unshakeable against Pharaoh's terrifying threats of execution, caring only for the pleasure of their Lord Ta-Ha 20:72. Their sudden journey from occult practitioners in the morning to steadfast martyrs by evening reveals how profoundly genuine faith alters human priorities and removes worldly fear.

The fruits of faith in this world and the hereafter

From the paper: «

Living with faith and righteous deeds yields rich fruits in both realms. In this world, Allah promises faithful communities security, moral leadership, and constructive stewardship on earth An-Nur 24:55, designating sincere believers as the very best of creation Al-Bayyinah 98:7. He showers them with physical and spiritual blessings from heaven and earth Al-A'raf 7:96, granting a pure and serene life (hayah tayyibah) marked by contentment and peace of mind An-Nahl 16:97, Muhammad 47:2.

Believers are liberated from paralyzing grief and fear Al-Baqarah 2:277, guarded against injustice Ta-Ha 20:112, protected from mutual wrongdoing in worldly dealings, and blessed with affection in the hearts of others Maryam 19:96. Allah brings them out of darkness into clarifying light Al-Baqarah 2:257, saving them from spiritual loss through communal commitment to truth and patience Al-Asr 103:2-3.

In the Hereafter, faith secures total forgiveness, transforming past transgressions into good deeds for the sincerely repentant Al-Ankabut 29:7, Al-Furqan 25:70, Al-Ma'idah 5:9. Believers are honored with eternal entry into the gardens of Firdaws Al-Kahf 18:107, Al-Baqarah 2:25, adorned in silk and fine jewelry Al-Hajj 22:23, sheltered in blissful shade An-Nisa 4:57, Ibrahim 14:23, and elevated to lofty dwellings Al-Ankabut 29:58, Ar-Rum 30:15 to enjoy delights beyond all human imagination.

«والتعبير يلقي ظلال الطمأنينة والراحة والثقة والرضى والسلام، ومتى صلح البال، استقام الشعور والتفكير، واطمأن القلب والضمير، وارتاحت المشاعر والأعصاب، ورضيت النفس واستمتعت بالأمن والسلام.»

Takeaways

  1. Nurture Faith Through Consistent Action

Conviction in the heart must be proven through everyday deeds of worship, integrity, and service, because faith without action is like a tree without fruit Al-Baqarah 2:285.

  2. Rely Completely on Allah's Wisdom in Times of Hardship

When faced with difficult trials, remind yourself that Allah's divine decree is rooted in infinite knowledge and benevolence, far surpassing your immediate human perspective Al-Baqarah 2:216, An-Nisa 4:19.

  3. Deepen Your Reflection on the Quran

Regularly reciting and contemplating the verses of the Quran is the most effective means to expand your heart and cause your faith to steadily increase Al-Anfal 8:2, Al-Kahf 18:13.

  4. Never Blame Destiny to Justify Personal Missteps

Take direct moral responsibility for your choices and quickly seek forgiveness, knowing that Allah granted you real agency and never forces a soul into disobedience Al-An'am 6:148.

  5. Live with Hope in Allah's Endless Mercy

Turn to Allah in sincere repentance, trusting that He not only forgives sins but can transform past regrets into rewarded righteousness Al-Furqan 25:70.

Reflect

  • When you examine your daily habits, which actions clearly demonstrate that faith is actively living in your heart?
  • How does remembering that angels surround you, protect you, and record your deeds influence your private moments?
  • In what ways have past difficulties eventually revealed blessings that you were initially unable to see?
  • What specific steps can you take this week to revive your spiritual state and feel your faith growing?
