Surah Yaseen 36:12 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْىِ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا۟ وَءَاثَٰرَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَٰهُ فِىٓ إِمَامٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ

English: We shall certainly bring the dead back to life, and We record what they send ahead of them as well as what they leave behind: We keep an account of everything in a clear Record.

Meaning & Reflection

'We give life to the dead, and We record what they sent ahead — and their traces.' al-Saadi and Ma'arif al-Qur'an dwell on 'their traces' (atharahum): not only the deeds you did, but the ongoing effects they leave running after you — knowledge you taught, a practice you started, a good (or bad) example others now follow. All of it keeps being written to your account long after you act. Ask yourself: I think of my record as closing when a deed ends. This verse says my deeds have a wake — ripples that outlive them. What am I setting in motion right now — in my children, my words, my example online — that will keep being recorded to me even when I've forgotten I started it?
