At a glance
Belief in angels is the second pillar of faith, foundational to every Muslim's worldview. They are unseen, noble beings created from light who are naturally disposed toward absolute obedience. Free from physical needs, desires, and sins, they tirelessly glorify Allah, administer His universe, and carry His revelations to humanity.
Throughout life, angels act as protectors, record-keepers, and supporters for the faithful. They carry out divine decrees from the moment of a person's creation, through their worldly trials and death, up to the Day of Judgment and the eternal welcome into Paradise.
Understanding the nature and duties of angels inspires deep reverence for Allah's immense power, instills vigilance in our daily conduct, and provides lasting comfort in knowing we are surrounded by loyal servants who supplicate for our forgiveness and well-being.
Key verses
- Al-Baqarah 2:30: When Allah announced His plan to establish a vicegerent on earth, the angels inquired to understand the divine wisdom, while continually praising and exalting their Creator.
- Al-Baqarah 2:98: Allah declares enmity against anyone who shows enmity toward His angels, emphasizing that opposing Gabriel or Michael amounts to disbelieving in Allah Himself.
- Al-Anbiya 21:26-28: This passage refutes the pagan claim that angels are divine offspring, affirming instead that they are honored servants who act solely by Allah's command and fear His majesty.
- Az-Zukhruf 43:19: Allah rebukes the pagans for boldly asserting without knowledge that the angels are female, warning that their baseless testimony will be questioned on the Day of Judgment.

- Al-An'am 6:61: Allah sends guardian angels to protect every human being continuously until death arrives, at which point appointed messengers take the soul without negligence.
- As-Sajdah 32:11: This verse affirms that the Angel of Death is specifically entrusted with taking human souls, assisted by supporting angels who execute the extraction.
- An-Nisa 4:136: Belief in the angels is established as an indispensable pillar of faith, and whoever disbelieves in them has wandered into profound misguidance.

Angels and Adam
From the paper: «
When Allah willed the creation of Adam to dwell on earth as a vicegerent, He informed the angels of His majestic plan. The angels questioned this decision, asking whether a creation that spreads corruption and sheds blood would be placed there, while they themselves continually glorified and praised Him Al-Baqarah 2:30. Scholars explain that their inquiry was not born of jealousy or objection, but of a sincere desire to understand divine wisdom, informed by earlier knowledge Allah had given them. Allah responded by asserting His supreme knowledge over what they could not grasp, teaching the believer to submit with humility whenever divine wisdom is veiled from human intellect.
Once Adam was formed and given life, Allah commanded all the angels to prostrate before him Al-Baqarah 2:34, Al-Hijr 15:30. Muslim scholars unanimously agree that this prostration was not an act of worship, for worship belongs solely to Allah. Rather, it was a prostration of honor, greeting, and respect, akin to the prostration Joseph's brothers offered to him Yusuf 12:100. By commanding His purest creations to honor Adam, Allah demonstrated humanity's high station when fulfilling divine law, while making the angels' swift obedience an enduring testament to their submission to the Creator.

Attributes of angels
From the paper: «
Angels belong to the unseen realm, known only through truthful divine revelation. The Qur'an describes them as possessing wings: two, three, four, or many more, reflecting their varying ranks and ability to swiftly execute divine commands Fatir 35:1. Prophet Muhammad saw Gabriel in his natural form with six hundred wings.
Unlike humans and jinn, angels are innately programmed for absolute obedience. They never sin, never hesitate, and do exactly what they are ordered At-Tahrim 66:6, acting only with divine leave Al-Anbiya 21:26-27.
The Qur'an strictly refutes the pagan claim that angels are female or daughters of Allah Al-Anbiya 21:26, Az-Zukhruf 43:19. Such claims are pure falsehood, as angels are honored servants free of gender distinctions and physical needs. As shown during their visit to Abraham, they do not eat, drink, or marry Adh-Dhariyat 51:24-28, Hud 11:70.
Their numbers are immense, known fully only to Allah Al-Muddaththir 74:31. Though nineteen overseers govern Hell Al-Muddaththir 74:30, each has countless helpers. Furthermore, seventy thousand angels enter the Heavenly House (al-Bayt al-Ma'mur) each day, never to return. Angels also possess hearts, intellect, and the capacity for speech, conversing with their Lord and asking one another about His decrees Saba 34:23, An-Naba 78:38.

Functions of angels
From the paper: «
Allah has assigned noble tasks to the angels across the heavens and earth. First and foremost is their continuous worship: they testify to Allah's oneness Ali 'Imran 3:18 and the truth of revelation An-Nisa 4:166, align in tightly packed rows for prayer As-Saffat 37:1, As-Saffat 37:165, bow and prostrate endlessly Al-A'raf 7:206, circle the heavenly Ka'bah At-Tur 52:4, glorify Him without ceasing, and stand in awe of His majesty An-Nahl 16:50, Al-Anbiya 21:28.
They are also entrusted with guiding and caring for humans. They accompany believers at death, reassuring the righteous with news of Paradise An-Nahl 16:32, Fussilat 41:30, while punishing the souls of disbelievers Al-Anfal 8:50. Guardian angels watch over every person night and day until the appointed decree comes Al-An'am 6:61, Ar-Ra'd 13:11, while specialized angels extract souls at death As-Sajdah 32:11.
Angels descended with revelation upon chosen messengers An-Nahl 16:2, Ash-Shura 42:52. They supplicate and seek forgiveness for the believers, helping lead them from darkness into light Al-Ahzab 33:43, Ghafir 40:7. They delivered glad tidings of children to Abraham, Mary, and Zechariah Adh-Dhariyat 51:28, Ali 'Imran 3:45, Ali 'Imran 3:39, and fought alongside the faithful in battle to steady their hearts Al-Anfal 8:12.
Cosmically, eight angels will carry the Divine Throne on the Last Day Al-Haqqah 69:17, while others will blow the Horn to mark the Day of Judgment An-Naml 27:87, Az-Zumar 39:68. On the Night of Decree, they descend in vast numbers carrying every blessed matter Al-Qadr 97:4.

Angels mentioned in the Quran
From the paper: «
While angels are countless Al-Muddaththir 74:31, the Qur'an specifically mentions several by name and role:
- Gabriel (Jibril): The trustworthy spirit (al-Ruh al-Amin) and Holy Spirit (Ruh al-Qudus) who conveyed revelation to the prophets Al-Baqarah 2:97-98, Ash-Shu'ara 26:192-194, An-Nahl 16:102. He is described as noble, powerful, highly established with Allah, obeyed among the angels, and trustworthy At-Takwir 81:19-21, An-Najm 53:6.
- Michael (Mika'il): Entrusted with rain and vegetation, sustaining the physical life of the earth, just as Gabriel sustains the spiritual life of hearts through revelation Al-Baqarah 2:98.
- Malik: The overseer and guardian of Hell, who informs its suffering inhabitants that their torment is unending Az-Zukhruf 43:77, Fatir 35:36.
- The Angel of Death (Malak al-Mawt): Entrusted with taking souls at their appointed hour As-Sajdah 32:11, assisted by legions of angels who draw the soul up before he receives it Al-An'am 6:61, Az-Zumar 39:42. The name "Azra'il" is derived from unverified extra-biblical traditions and has no basis in the Qur'an or authentic Sunnah.
- Harut and Marut: Two angels sent to Babylon as a trial for the people Al-Baqarah 2:102. They taught sorcery strictly as a test, warning every seeker that learning it was disbelief and pure harm.
- Israfil: Entrusted with blowing the Trumpet to signal the Day of Resurrection Al-Mu'minun 23:101, Az-Zumar 39:68. Though not named explicitly in the Qur'an, his role is established through sound prophetic tradition.
«فوصفه بأنه رسوله، وأنه كريم عنده، وأنه ذو قوة ومكانة عند ربه سبحانه، وأنه مطاع في السماوات، وأنه أمين على الوحي، فمن كرمه على ربه أنه أقرب الملائكة إليه، قال بعض السلف: منزلته من ربه منزلة الحاجب من الملك.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Attitude of believers toward angels
From the paper: «
Believing in angels is an essential pillar of Islamic faith; rejecting them nullifies one's belief and constitutes deep misguidance An-Nisa 4:136, Al-Baqarah 2:177, Al-Baqarah 2:285, Ali 'Imran 3:18. A Muslim must believe generally in all angels and specifically in those whose names and functions are revealed in the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah, while acknowledging that their knowledge of the unseen is limited entirely to what Allah permits Al-Anbiya 21:26-28, Al-Jinn 72:26.
Believers are obligated to honor, revere, and love all angels without exception, recognizing them as humanity's sincere well-wishers who supplicate for our forgiveness. We honor them by avoiding sins, polytheism, and impurities, since angels stay away from places where Allah is disobeyed or where offensive objects and odors are kept.
Crucially, a Muslim must show loyalty to every single angel. Rejecting or hating any angel, as some ancient factions did when claiming enmity toward Gabriel, equates to opposing Allah Himself Al-Baqarah 2:98. Mindful that noble recording angels continuously record every word and deed Al-Infitar 82:10-12, the believer treats them with modest reverence, seizing blessed occasions such as the Night of Decree to engage in good deeds under their sheltering presence Al-Qadr 97:3-5.
«وعلى المسلم أن يحب جميع الملائكة، فلا يفرق في ذلك بين ملكٍ وملك؛ لأنهم جميعًا عباد الله عاملون بأمره، تاركون لنهيه، وهم في هذا وحدة واحدة، لا يختلفون ولا يفترقون، فمن عادى واحدًا منهم فقد عادى الله وجميع الملائكة.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Attitude of disbelievers toward angels
From the paper: «
Disbelievers have historically held misguided views regarding angels, falling into three main errors:
- Worshiping them or claiming they are daughters of Allah: Pagan Arabs claimed angels were divine daughters As-Saffat 37:149-156, Az-Zukhruf 43:15-19, even though they detested having daughters themselves Az-Zukhruf 43:17, An-Najm 53:21-22. The Qur'an exposes this hypocrisy and clarifies that on the Last Day, the angels will disown their worshipers, pointing out that those people were actually submitting to rebellious devils Saba 34:40-41, An-Nisa 4:117.
- Arbitrary allegiances: Some groups claimed to love Michael while declaring enmity toward Gabriel, claiming Gabriel was an angel of war and punishment Al-Baqarah 2:97-98, Al-Baqarah 2:103. The Qur'an condemns this division, affirming that the angels form a unified, obedient collective.
- Outright denial: Philosophers and materialists denied the physical reality of angels An-Nisa 4:136, reducing them to abstract virtuous forces or human conscience.
Additionally, many deniers stubbornly demanded to see angels in person or insisted that a prophet must be an angel Az-Zukhruf 43:53, Al-Hijr 15:7-8, Al-An'am 6:111, Fussilat 41:14, Ash-Shu'ara 26:27, Al-Mu'minun 23:24. The Qur'an answers that had Allah sent an angel as a messenger, He would have clothed him as a man, leaving them just as confused Al-An'am 6:9, and had angels walked on earth as native inhabitants, an angelic messenger would have been sent Al-Isra 17:95.

Roles of angels in the hereafter
From the paper: «
On the Day of Resurrection and in the life to come, angels fulfill magnificent roles centered around judgment and the reward of the righteous.
They will be permitted to intercede for the people of monotheism, but only after Allah grants His permission and expresses His pleasure with both the intercessor and the recipient An-Najm 53:26, Al-Anbiya 21:27-28, Az-Zumar 39:3. This intercession is an honor granted by Allah to His devoted servants.
When the believers enter Paradise, angels will warmly welcome them at the gates, soothing away all dread Al-Anbiya 21:103. They enter upon the righteous from every door with glad tidings, saying, "Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured" Ar-Ra'd 13:23-24, celebrating their perseverance over sins, trials, and hardships in the worldly life. The keepers of Paradise greet them with declarations of their purity, inviting them to dwell therein eternally Az-Zumar 39:73.
Finally, when Allah arrives to render judgment between His creation in a manner befitting His majesty, the angels will descend and stand in vast, magnificent ranks Al-Baqarah 2:210, Al-An'am 6:158, Al-Fajr 89:21-22, Al-Furqan 25:25. Ranks of angels will surround the gathered creation, glorifying their Lord and displaying the overwhelming grandeur of that Day.
«وهذا الاحتفاء والترحيب والتحية من الملائكة لهم كله بما صبروا في الدنيا على طاعة الله وعبادته وعلى مشقة الجهاد والثغور، وصبروا عن الشرك والمعاصي، وصبروا على أقدار الله من فقر وترك للأوطان، ورضوا بما قسم الله لهم، فيموت أحدهم وفي صدره حاجة لا يستطيع لها قضاء.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Takeaways
Foster Modesty and Reverence
Knowing that honorable recording angels constantly accompany you and record your words and actions should inspire careful speech, ethical conduct, and heartfelt modesty in private and public.
Keep Spaces Pure and Dignified

Draw Strength from Unseen Allies
Remember that the angels actively supplicate for believers, seek forgiveness for their shortcomings, and stand as comforting allies in times of spiritual loneliness and hardship.
Maintain Patience Through Worldly Trials
The hardships, sacrifices, and self-restraint you endure today will be the exact reason angels greet you at the gates of Paradise with peace and congratulation.
Reflect
- How does being aware of the honorable recording angels change what you choose to say and do when you are alone?
- When facing difficulty or spiritual loneliness, how can remembering the angels' continuous prayers for believers bring you peace?
- What practical adjustments can you make in your home and habits to invite the presence of angels into your daily life?

Linguistic meaning
The word al-Mala'ikah is the plural of malak, which originates from the root a-l-k meaning to carry a message, referring to an emissary or courier. It is also said to relate to m-l-k, denoting strength and firmness.

Technical meaning
Angels are subtle, luminous beings created by Allah from light in the unseen world. They are endowed with great power, the ability to take on different forms, and are naturally inclined to worship and obey Allah without the capacity for sin, fulfilling various appointed cosmic roles.

How it differs from related terms
Jinn
- While both angels and jinn belong to the unseen realm, angels are created from light, possess no physical lusts or gender, and are completely protected from sin. Jinn are created from fire, have genders, procreate, consume food, and have free will, making them capable of belief or disbelief.
Humans
- Humans are visible creatures created from clay, endowed with free will, intellect, desires, and moral accountability, but they cannot naturally perceive the unseen. Angels are luminous, spiritual beings who do not eat, drink, or marry, and who obey Allah unconditionally.
