Meaning and reflection
Wording
Let's ponder Surah 52, verse 36, a verse that directly challenges us about our deepest convictions.
The Challenging Question
The verse opens with a rhetorical question: "أَمْ خَلَقُوا۟ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ" (Am khalaqū as-samāwāti wal-arḍa), meaning "Or did they create the heavens and the earth?" This follows an earlier question in the preceding verse (52:35) about whether they created themselves or were created from nothing. The word "أم" (Am), meaning "or," serves as a stark challenge, forcing the listener to confront the magnitude of creation. Allah is questioning those who deny Him, or His Oneness, or the Resurrection, by pointing to the most undeniable signs of His power: the vast, intricate heavens and earth. No human being can claim to have created such a masterpiece. This question implicitly acknowledges that the Creator of such marvels must be none other than Allah.
The Core Problem: Lack of Certainty
Immediately after this profound question, the verse shifts abruptly with the word "بَلْ" (bal), which means "rather" or "but." As Ibn Ashur explains, this "bal" acts as a forceful correction, dismissing the possibility of them being creators. It points to their true, underlying issue. The verse then concludes with "لَّا يُوقِنُونَ" (lā yūqinūn), meaning "they do not have certainty" or "they lack conviction."
This isn't just about not knowing, it's about not having *yaqīn*, which is a deep, unwavering, firm conviction in the truth. Al-Razi offers several insights into what this lack of certainty entails. It could mean they lack conviction that Allah is the *sole* Creator, despite admitting He created the heavens and earth. Or, it might refer to a general absence of firm belief in Allah's Oneness. Most profoundly, it can signify that they fundamentally lack conviction in *any* of the clear signs and proofs that point to Allah, His power, and the truth of His message. Their denial isn't due to a lack of evidence, but a lack of sincere, open-hearted conviction.
This verse helps us see that sometimes, people deny truths not because the evidence is weak, but because something prevents their hearts from reaching certainty. It's a call for us to look inward and ask ourselves if our own conviction in Allah and His signs is truly *yaqīn*, a certainty that shapes our entire being.
