Surah Al-Baqara 2:257 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

ٱللَّهُ وَلِىُّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يُخْرِجُهُم مِّنَ ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ ۖ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَوْلِيَآؤُهُمُ ٱلطَّٰغُوتُ يُخْرِجُونَهُم مِّنَ ٱلنُّورِ إِلَى ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ ۗ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ

English: God is the ally of those who believe: He brings them out of the depths of darkness and into the light. As for the disbelievers, their allies are false gods who take them from the light into the depths of darkness, they are the inhabitants of the Fire, and there they will remain.

Bengali: যারা ঈমান এনেছে, আল্লাহ তাদের অভিভাবক। তাদেরকে তিনি বের করে আনেন অন্ধকার থেকে আলোর দিকে। আর যারা কুফরী করে তাদের অভিভাবক হচ্ছে তাগুত। তারা তাদেরকে আলো থেকে বের করে অন্ধকারের দিকে নিয়ে যায়। এরাই হলো দোযখের অধিবাসী, চিরকাল তারা সেখানেই থাকবে।

Meaning & Reflection

'God is the ally of those who believe; He brings them out of darknesses into the light. But those who disbelieve — their allies are the false gods, who bring them out of light into darknesses. Those are the companions of the Fire, abiding therein forever.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note the precise wording — 'darknesses' (plural) but 'light' (singular): the ways of straying are *many*, scattered and various, while the truth is *one*. And God is named 'wali', the intimate ally who personally leads His own out of the dark. Ask yourself: notice that God does not merely *point* to the light from a distance — He is the 'wali' who takes the believer *by the hand* and brings him out. Guidance is relational, personal, an act of divine friendship. And the plural 'darknesses' names my real situation: confusion comes in a hundred forms — of doubt, desire, despair, distraction — but the light out of all of them is single and the same. When I am lost in one of the many darknesses, do I reach for the one Ally who brings His own into the light — or for the false 'allies' who, promising to help, only lead me from what light I had back into the dark?
