At a glance
In the Quran, the heart is far more than a physical organ; it is the deep center of human consciousness, choice, and faith. It is where belief takes root, intentions form, and divine light enters. How your heart responds to the speech of Allah shapes the quality of your entire earthly life and your eternal standing before Him.
The Quran categorizes hearts into three states: the sound heart that finds tranquility and awe in Allah's remembrance, the diseased heart plagued by doubt, malice, and stubbornness, and the dead heart that has become completely sealed against the truth. Each condition carries natural consequences that unfold through divine laws.
Nurturing a living, sound heart requires constant vigilance. Through sincere repentance, conscious devotion, and honest reflection upon revelation, a believer keeps the heart luminous, responsive, and protected from spiritual decay.
Key verses
- Al-Anfal 8:2: Describes true believers as those whose hearts tremble with awe when Allah is mentioned and whose faith expands when His verses are recited.
- Al-Ma'idah 5:13: Shows that breaking covenants with Allah leads to divine rejection and hardened hearts that distort truth and forget vital portions of guidance.
- Ali 'Imran 3:151: Illustrates how Allah casts paralyzing terror into the hearts of disbelievers as a direct consequence of their association of partners with Him.

The sound heart
From the paper: «
The sound heart (القلب السليم) is living, sincere, and free of associating partners with Allah. In the Quran, it is defined by several radiant qualities:
- Tranquility (اطمئنان): A deep stillness after agitation. Abraham sought this peace of certainty when he asked Allah how He revives the dead Al-Baqarah 2:260, and Allah affirms that hearts find rest through His remembrance Ar-Ra'd 13:28. It also manifests as unshakable conviction in hardship Ali 'Imran 3:124-126, divine reassurance during battle Al-Anfal 8:9-10, and holding fast to faith even under extreme duress An-Nahl 16:106.
- Inner Peace (سكينة): Dignified calm descending upon believers during frightening trials, as granted in the cave At-Tawbah 9:40, during the treaty of al-Hudaybiyyah Al-Fath 48:4, at Hunayn At-Tawbah 9:25-26, and under the tree Al-Fath 48:18.
- Humility and Awe (خشوع وإخبات): A tender, lasting submission to Allah's remembrance rather than allowing the heart to rust with time Al-Hadid 57:16. It shows as physical modesty in prayer Al-Mu'minun 23:1-2 and utter surrender to divine truth Al-Hajj 22:52-54.
- Reverence, Awe, and Return: True piety originates here Al-Hajj 22:32, alongside trembling awe when Allah's majesty is recalled Al-Anfal 8:2, and perpetual turning back to Him in sincere repentance Qaf 50:31-33.
- Purity and Guidance: A pure heart longs for the Quran, remains unsullied by worldly doubts Al-Ahzab 33:53, and accepts Allah's decree with contented surrender during life's calamities.

The diseased heart
From the paper: «
The diseased heart (القلب المريض) is impaired by spiritual sicknesses that cloud its discernment and hinder it from wholesome living:
- Hardness (قسوة): A stone-like stiffness where admonitions fail to penetrate Al-Baqarah 2:74. It arises from repeatedly breaking sacred pledges Al-Ma'idah 5:13 and meeting divine trials with obstinacy rather than humble supplication Al-An'am 6:43. Remarkably, when a soul becomes thoroughly vile, hearing divine reminders only multiplies its stubbornness Az-Zumar 39:22.
- Doubt and Agitation (ريب): An unsettling anxiety and hesitation regarding faith that plagues hypocrites. It prevents sincere striving At-Tawbah 9:45 and drives their evasion of divine rulings An-Nur 24:48-50. In the case of the conspiratorial mosque built to harm the community, their destructive intent stayed as permanent anxiety in their chests until death shattered their hearts At-Tawbah 9:107-110.
- Rancor and Malice (غل): Resentment and envy buried deep in the chest. In contrast, believers pray to be entirely purged of ill will toward fellow Muslims Al-Hashr 59:9-10.
- Harshness (غلظة): Coarseness and a lack of compassion that alienates others. The Prophet was blessed with gentleness instead of being harsh-hearted Ali 'Imran 3:159.
- Distraction and Deviation (لهو وزيغ): Worldly amusement distracts careless hearts from reckoning and revelation Al-Anbiya 21:1-3. Persisting in crooked choices causes Allah to turn such hearts away from the straight path As-Saff 61:5, which is why the grounded believers beg Him never to let their hearts stray after receiving guidance Ali 'Imran 3:8.

The dead heart
From the paper: «
The dead heart (القلب الميت) has lost its spiritual vitality completely. Having systematically rejected divine guidance, it becomes incapacitated by severe spiritual conditions:
- Spiritual Blindness (عمى): The Quran declares that physical eyesight may be sharp, yet real blindness is the blindness of the heart residing within the chest Al-Hajj 22:46. The persistent buildup of sins forms dark smoke over the heart's mirror, closing it off from appreciating truth in this world and leaving it blind in the Hereafter Al-Isra 17:72.
- Rust and Encasement (ران): Continual wrongdoing covers the heart in dark rust until it is entirely encased, causing the transgressor to mock divine revelation as ancient legends Al-Mutaffifin 83:7-14.
- Absorbed Disbelief (كفر): Persistent denial causes corrupt loves to saturate the heart, just as affection for the golden calf was absorbed into the hearts of rebellious Israelites Al-Baqarah 2:93.
- Entrenched Hypocrisy (نفاق): Outward profession masking inner rejection. Sickness is rooted in their hearts, and with every fresh revelation that exposes their treachery, their illness is compounded Al-Baqarah 2:8-10.
When a heart reaches this deadened state, it can no longer register warnings or feel remorse. It views evil as acceptable, treats the truth with hostility, and locks itself away from divine mercy.

Allah's way with possessors of hearts
From the paper: «
Allah's established law (سنة الله) governs how He treats individuals according to the condition of their hearts:
- The Sound Hearts: In this life, Allah showers them with serenity, wholesome fear of sin, gentle compassion, spiritual purity, deep reverence, loving harmony with others, steadfast courage, and profound understanding. In the Hereafter, He grants them salvation and admission into eternal Paradise, where nothing benefits a servant except presenting a sound heart Ash-Shu'ara 26:88-89.
- The Diseased Hearts: Allah does not hasten punishment; He grants respite so people may repent. Yet if the diseased refuse to seek healing, His law increases their filth upon filth (رجس) whenever new verses are revealed. He turns their hearts away (صرف) from guidance because they purposefully refuse to comprehend and act At-Tawbah 9:127.
- The Dead Hearts: Because they willingly chose stubborn opposition, Allah visits them with severe consequences:
- Terror (رعب): Overwhelming fear cast into their hearts Ali 'Imran 3:151, stripping away their resolve Al-Anfal 8:12-13.
- Regret (حسرة): Bitter, agonizing remorse fixed inside their chests Ali 'Imran 3:156.
- Tight Hardening (شد): Complete constriction preventing faith, as invoked against Pharaoh's court Yunus 10:88-89.
- Stamping and Sealing (طبع وختم): Divine stamps placed over hearts, hearing, and sight, cutting off receptivity to reminders.
- Coverings and Locks (كنان وأقفال): Heavy veils that keep them from grasping revelation Al-Isra 17:46, leaving their hearts locked tight against the Quran Muhammad 47:24.

Takeaways
Act immediately when reminded of Allah
Postponing repentance hardens the inner core over time. True humility before Allah requires swift action in the present moment before spiritual rust settles in.
Cleanse your chest of malice and envy
A hallmark of the companions was retiring at night without harboring rancor or jealousy toward any believer. Cultivating this purity elevates a person's spiritual rank.
Counter spiritual hardness with Quranic recitation
Just as rain revives dead earth, the consistent recitation and remembrance of Allah polishes the heart, dispelling numbness and restoring spiritual feeling.
Beware of persistent minor sins
Every unchecked sin leaves a dark mark on the heart. Without regular repentance and asking for forgiveness, these marks accumulate into an impenetrable layer of rust.
Accept divine decrees with contentment
A guided heart displays patience during hardship and gratitude during ease, knowing that whatever struck could never have missed and whatever missed could never have struck.
Reflect
- When you listen to the Quran, does your heart feel moved and softened, or does it feel distracted and numb?
- Is there any hidden malice, envy, or grudge toward a fellow Muslim lingering in your chest right now?
- What recurring sin or careless habit in your routine might be leaving dark marks upon the mirror of your heart?
- How do you typically react when a sudden hardship occurs: with patient trust in Allah's wisdom, or with panic and agitation?

Linguistic meaning
Linguistically, the root denotes two sound origins: the purest, most noble core of a thing, and the turning or shifting of something from one direction to another.

How it differs from related terms
The Intellect
- While the heart is the comprehensive seat of consciousness and shifting feelings, the intellect specifically denotes the capacity that restrains a person from foolishness, distinguishes between benefit and harm, and resides within the heart.
The Burning Core
- The heart is called fu'ad specifically when its intense emotional warmth, burning responsiveness, and delicate sensitivity are emphasized, functioning as the receptive inner membrane of the heart.
The Chests
- The chest is the physical and spiritual housing, outer chamber, and protective fortress within which the heart sits like an honored leader in a high assembly.
