Surah Al-Baqara 2:45 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection
Medinan · Verse 45 of 286
English: Seek help with steadfastness and prayer- though this is hard indeed for anyone but the humble,
Meaning & Reflection
'And seek help through patience and prayer; and indeed, it is difficult except for the humble.' al-Saadi and Ibn Kathir note the two God-given tools for every hardship — 'sabr' (patient endurance) and 'salah' (prayer) — and the honest admission that leaning on them is *hard*, easy only for 'al-khashi'in', the humble whose hearts are soft toward God. Ask yourself: when trouble strikes, my instinct is to grab any tool *but* these two — distraction, worry, control, escape. The verse points me back to patience and prayer as the real sources of help, while admitting they don't come easily. And it names why: they feel 'heavy' precisely to the proud heart and 'light' to the humble one. So my very *difficulty* with patience and prayer is a reading on my humility. When I'm struggling, do I reach first for patience and prayer — and does my resistance to them reveal a pride I need to soften?
