At a glance

In the Quran, striving (السعي) denotes deliberate, purposeful action driven by deep intention and resolve. Humans are constantly in motion, yet the Quran teaches that our efforts are profoundly diverse: some strive tirelessly for eternal reward and the service of truth, while others exhaust themselves spreading harm and opposing divine signs.

Every deliberate exertion leaves an indelible trace. Allah meticulously records each action, small or great, ensuring that no sincere deed is overlooked and no injustice is tolerated. This divine accounting transforms everyday diligence into a spiritual pursuit where every movement matters.

Ultimately, striving bears fruits both in this earthly existence and in the life to come. True success lies in anchoring one's daily efforts in sincere faith, upright character, and beneficial knowledge, while steering clear of destructive pursuits that deplete the soul and bring lasting regret.

Key verses

Praiseworthy striving

From the paper: «أولًا: السعي الممدوح»

The Quran praises purposeful effort directed toward pleasing Allah and uplifting creation. Striving in worship encompasses congregational devotion, such as hastening to the Friday remembrance Al-Jumu'ah 62:9 and walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah during pilgrimage rites Al-Baqarah 2:158. True striving also extends to caring for the vulnerable: the paper cites hadith comparing one who labors for widows, the poor, and orphans to a warrior in Allah's path or a continuous worshiper.

Another noble arena is championing the truth. The believer in Surah Ya-Sin traversed a great distance from the city's furthest bounds to summon his community to the messengers Ya-Sin 36:20, while the believer among Pharaoh's folk spoke truth before a tyrant to defend innocent life Ghafir 40:28. Striving in truth also includes legitimate military defense Al-Anfal 8:5-8.

Seeking sacred knowledge is equally paramount. The Quran urges communities to ensure a contingent devotes itself to learning and teaching At-Tawbah 9:122, gently corrects prioritizing worldly power over earnest learners Abasa 80:8, and recounts Musa's arduous journey to study under al-Khidr Al-Kahf 18:62-69.

Finally, maintaining mosques physically and spiritually At-Tawbah 9:17-18 and offering sincere, timely counsel to protect fellow humans Al-Qasas 28:20 exemplify high forms of praised effort.

Blameworthy striving

From the paper: «ثانيًا: السعي المذموم»

Opposite to noble effort lies blameworthy striving, which manifests in destructive channels across human history. A primary form is actively obstructing people from divine truth An-Nisa 4:61, turning hearts away through distortion, mockery, and false skepticism Saba 34:5. Those who labor to frustrate Allah's signs imagine they can outmaneuver their Creator, yet they prepare their own downfall Al-Hajj 22:51.

Blameworthy striving also manifests as spreading corruption across the land. The Quran condemns malicious actors whose slick speech masks deceit, whose sole pursuit in power is the devastation of agriculture and living stock Al-Baqarah 2:204-205. Such behavior is seen in arrogant rulers like Pharaoh, who turned away into corrupt schemes An-Nazi'at 79:22, and in habitual sowers of strife Al-Ma'idah 5:64. It reaches an extreme in violent banditry and rebellion against societal safety Al-Ma'idah 5:33-34.

Lastly, vandalizing or sabotaging sacred places of worship constitutes profound injustice Al-Baqarah 2:114. Whether by physical destruction, desecration, or barring worshipers from calling upon Allah, scholars note that turning sacred sanctuaries into hubs of idolatry, hostility, or ruin is an unforgivable offense that strips violators of inner peace.

«ويكون المعنى: والذين جهدوا في إبطال آياتنا، ورد دعوة الدين، والتكذيب بها، وثبطوا الناس عن متابعة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، ظناً منهم أنهم يعجزوننا ويتفلتون من أمرنا وبعثنا لهم وأننا لا نقدر عليهم، فهم أهل النار الحارة الموجعة، الشديد عذابها ونكالها، المقيمون فيها على الدوام.»

Recording striving and accountability for it

From the paper: «كتابة السعي والمحاسبة عليه»

Divine justice dictates that no human exertion goes unnoticed. Allah assures the believing worker that their sincere actions will never be met with ingratitude or dismissal, as angelic scribes record every deed Al-Anbiya 21:94. Similarly, the subtle plots, private whispers, and public denials of disbelievers are registered with precision Yunus 10:21 Az-Zukhruf 43:80.

This documentation encompasses both forward deeds and their lasting legacies: the intentions preceding the action and the ripple effects flowing from it Ya-Sin 36:12. Preserved within the archetypal Record, every tiny and colossal detail is counted without flaw Al-Qamar 54:52-53.

Recording serves as the prelude to strict accounting. Just as humans document financial transactions to safeguard rights Al-Baqarah 2:282, Allah places the scrolls before each soul so truth is undeniable Al-Isra 17:13-14. A person will directly witness their own life's striving An-Najm 53:39-40. Those who receive their record in their right hand rejoice at easy accounting and boundless grace, whereas those given it in their left hand or behind their back face overwhelming regret over neglected warnings and misplaced pride in wealth Al-Haqqah 69:19-29.

Causes of striving

From the paper: «أسباب السعي»

Human exertion is always propelled by internal motives. Praised striving springs from robust roots:

  • Living faith coupled with righteous works, which the Quran consistently unites as prerequisites for accepted striving Al-Isra 17:19.
  • Reverent mindfulness (taqwa), which spurs prompt repentance, generous spending, and emotional restraint Ali 'Imran 3:133-136.
  • Obedience to Allah and His Messenger, unlocking true salvation An-Nisa 4:69.
  • Courageous sacrifice in divine paths At-Tawbah 9:111, sincere repentance that cleanses past missteps Al-Furqan 25:70-71, unwavering steadfastness Fussilat 41:30, and the persistent pursuit of beneficial knowledge Abasa 80:8.

Conversely, blameworthy striving stems from spiritual sickness. Its prime driver is disbelief and idolatry, in which individuals project divine attributes onto creation and pursue delusions Al-Kahf 18:104. Hypocrisy fuels inner malice beneath sweet outward words Al-Baqarah 2:204-205, leading to armed transgression Al-Ma'idah 5:33-34 and the deliberate destruction of worship spaces Al-Baqarah 2:114.

Major moral failures, such as disrespecting parents Al-Isra 17:23-24, severing family ties Muhammad 47:22-23, consuming usury Al-Baqarah 2:275, and living solely for material gain without care for the afterlife Ash-Shura 42:20, drag human striving into ruin.

Recompense for striving

From the paper: «جزاء السعي»

Every form of striving produces consequences across both realms. In this world, praised striving generates widespread affection among believers Maryam 19:96, divine commendation, and an inward contentment money cannot buy An-Nahl 16:97. It brings safety, societal empowerment An-Nur 24:55, relief from suffocating hardships At-Talaq 65:2-4, divine assistance, and protection that shields the worker's family and progeny Al-Kahf 18:82.

In the hereafter, righteous effort yields the forgiveness of sins, boundless gardens An-Nisa 4:124, and radiant light speeding before believers across the Bridge Al-Hadid 57:12. The soul looks upon its former labors with deep, complete contentment (radiah) Al-Ghashiyah 88:9.

In contrast, blameworthy striving brings immediate worldly decay. Deviant choices cause hearts to stray further from guidance As-Saff 61:5, breeding spiritual blindness, reciprocal humiliation Al-Baqarah 2:14-15, mutual animosity Al-Ma'idah 5:64, and the complete waste of worldly enterprises Al-Kahf 18:104.

In the life to come, unrepentant transgressors face hellfire Al-Hajj 22:51. Their worldly acts, performed devoid of faith, dissolve into scattered ash Ibrahim 14:18 or a desert mirage An-Nur 24:39, receiving worldly compensation only to leave them completely bankrupt on the Day of Reckoning Hud 11:15-16.

«أحدهما: أنهم حمدوا سعيهم واجتهادهم في العمل لله، لما فازوا بسببه من العاقبة الحميدة كالرجل يعمل العمل فيجزى عليه بالجميل، ويظهر له منه عاقبة محمودة فيقول، ما أحسن ما عملت، ولقد وفقت للصواب فيما صنعت فيثني على عمل نفسه ويرضاه.»

Takeaways

  1. Purify the Engine of Your Effort

Because striving is defined by conscious intent, external motion has no lasting weight with Allah unless fueled by faith and sincere hope for the hereafter Al-Isra 17:19.

  2. Serve the Vulnerable as an Act of Devotion

Diligence is not confined to personal rituals. Exerting oneself to provide for widows, sustain orphans, and relieve the distressed equals the highest spiritual ranks.

  3. Speak Up to Protect Others from Harm

Courageous counsel is a praised form of striving. When you see danger approaching an unwary person, hasten to alert them with wisdom, just as believers did in the Quran Al-Qasas 28:20.

  4. Respect and Build the Sanctuary

Maintaining mosques through attendance, quiet reverence, study circles, and physical care is a mark of true faith, while neglect or disruption brings severe loss At-Tawbah 9:18 Al-Baqarah 2:114.

  5. Remember Your Legacy Outlives Your Work

Allah records both the deed itself and the enduring ripples it leaves behind Ya-Sin 36:12. Choose projects and speech that will continue to yield good long after you are gone.

Reflect

  • When you review how you spent your energy this past week, did most of it serve fleeting worldly gains or eternal benefit?
  • Is there someone in your family or neighborhood who needs your active, hands-on support rather than mere verbal sympathy?
  • How reverently do you treat the spaces of worship you enter, both in terms of physical care and inward focus?
  • If your complete book of deeds were unrolled before you today, which strivings would you feel grateful to read?

How it differs from related terms

العمل Action / Work
The primary Quranic meaning of striving is action. However, 'amal broadly denotes any deliberate deed springing from reflection and purpose, encompassing both inward intentions of the heart and outward bodily movements, serving as the broader category under which purposeful striving operates.
الشغل Occupation / Distraction
Signifies an engagement that dispels emptiness and consumes attention. It shares with striving the concept of activity, but an occupation can exist without productive labor, and striving may signify physical pacing rather than mere mental or worldly occupation.
