Believers! When the call to prayer is made on the day of congregation, hurry towards the reminder of God and leave off your trading––that is better for you, if only you knew––

Meaning and reflection
Worldly Mirror
This verse opens with a direct address to all believers: "يا أيها الذين آمنوا" (O you who have believed). It is Allah Himself speaking, laying down a foundational command and guidance regarding the congregational prayer on Friday. The tone is authoritative yet compassionate, guiding believers towards what is ultimately best for them.
An Invitation to Believers
The core instruction is clear: "إِذَا نُودِىَ لِلصَّلَوٰةِ مِن يَوْمِ ٱلْجُمُعَةِ فَٱسْعَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلْبَيْعَ" (when the call to prayer is made on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off business). This isn't merely an invitation; it's a binding call to action. The phrase "فَٱسْعَوْا۟" (hasten) indicates a deep earnestness and resolve in approaching Allah's remembrance, which al-Munir explains encompasses both the sermon and the prayer itself. It’s not about running hastily, but about setting out with purpose and energy, leaving behind all distractions. And what are we to leave? "ٱلْبَيْعَ" (business), which al-Munir clarifies is a broad term for all forms of worldly preoccupations, from buying and selling to any activity that might divert one from this sacred gathering.
A Shift in Priorities
This verse beautifully mirrors our internal struggles and societal patterns. It challenges the heart's natural inclination towards worldly gain and comforts. How often do we prioritize immediate financial or social engagements over spiritual nourishment? This divine command forces a re-evaluation of our values, asking us to recognize that there are moments when our connection to the Divine must take precedence. Dr. Israr Ahmad highlights the communal importance of Jumu'ah, describing it as a weekly "educational and training gathering" for the *Hizbullah* (party of Allah), essential for continuous purification and awareness of our collective mission. It’s a vital space for collective learning and spiritual growth, especially significant in times and places where formal education and widespread knowledge might be scarce.
The Deeper Wisdom
The verse concludes with a profound statement: "ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌۭ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ" (that is better for you, if you only knew). This isn't just a command; it's a spiritual diagnosis. It suggests that our short-sightedness might prevent us from grasping the true, lasting benefit of answering Allah's call. The act of leaving our business and hastening to Jumu'ah is an inner struggle, a conscious decision to prioritize the unseen over the seen, the eternal over the temporary. It's an opportunity for deep introspection, allowing us to ask ourselves: Do I truly understand what is good for me, both in this life and the next? Are my priorities aligned with Allah's wisdom, or with fleeting worldly allurements? This reflection invites us to reshape our hearts and minds to truly know, and thus wholeheartedly act upon, what is best.
