At a glance
In the Quranic worldview, nothing a person does is lost or neutral. Every choice, whether an outward deed, an inner motive, or material wealth pursued, is an act of earning (كسب, kasb). While humans often seek immediate gain or material accumulation, the Quran elevates earning to a comprehensive principle of moral accountability, teaching that what you acquire through your intentions and deeds will ultimately return to benefit or burden your own soul.
Allah's infinite knowledge encompasses all that human beings earn, whether done openly or in secret, and what tomorrow holds remains hidden with Him alone. Understanding earning reshapes daily life: it directs believers to pursue lawful sustenance, to strive for righteous deeds before opportunity passes, and to realize that divine justice holds each individual responsible only for their deliberate choices while extending immense mercy and pardon.
Key verses
- Al-Baqarah 2:81: The paper explains that using the term earning for evil and disbelief is an expression of derision, showing that whoever surrounds themselves with sin will find their supposed gains ending only in eternal ruin.
- An-Nisa 4:111: This verse establishes individual moral responsibility, showing that whoever commits a deliberate sin earns its shame, guilt, and harmful consequences solely against their own soul.
- Al-Baqarah 2:79: The paper highlights that altering divine texts for cheap worldly profit is an illegitimate form of earning, bringing severe ruin upon both the means used and the forbidden wealth gained.

Allah's encompassing knowledge of servants' earning
From the paper: «إحاطة علم الله تعالى بكسب العباد»
Allah’s knowledge is all-encompassing, knowing what was, what will be, and what could have been. Nothing in creation escapes His sight, including every deed people earn, whether good or evil. He knows the secret thoughts hidden in chests as well as open actions Al-An'am 6:3, and not a single matter in the heavens or the earth is concealed from Him Ali 'Imran 3:5, Ta-Ha 20:7. When adversaries plot in secret, their schemes never bypass divine awareness; Allah completely surrounds their plots and protects His messengers Ar-Ra'd 13:42.
Furthermore, what a person will earn in the future belongs to the realm of the unseen, known exclusively to Allah. The Quran identifies this as one of the keys of the unseen, for no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow in worldly wealth or spiritual reward, nor where it will die Luqman 31:34. Neither an angel brought near nor a sent messenger possesses this knowledge unless Allah reveals it Al-A'raf 7:187. Divine awareness equally covers every leaf that drops, every seed deep within the dark soil, and all that moves across land and sea Al-An'am 6:59.
«إن علم الله عز وجل محيط بكل شيء، لا يخفى عليه شيء؛ فهو عالم بما كان وما يكون، وما لو كان كيف يكون، ومن هذا العلم كسب الإنسان خيرًا كان أم شرًّا، فجاء هذا البحث يتحدث حول مدى علم الله وإحاطته بكسب العباد من خير وشر.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Types and forms of earning in the Quran
From the paper: «أنواع الكسب في القرآن وصور منه»
The Quran depicts several forms of human earning across different dimensions of life:
- Earning righteous deeds: Believers actively seek goodness in both worlds Al-Baqarah 2:201-202. The Quran emphasizes that sound faith and righteous actions must be earned through voluntary devotion before major cosmic signs appear, such as the sun rising from the west, after which forced belief will be of no benefit Al-An'am 6:158.
- Earning sins: Sinful earning includes major violations like association of partners with Allah Al-Baqarah 2:81, treating religion as entertainment Al-An'am 6:70, misappropriating war spoils Ali 'Imran 3:161, fleeing from battle Ali 'Imran 3:155, and knowingly committing sins An-Nisa 4:111. Among the gravest forms is falsely accusing an innocent person of one's own crime An-Nisa 4:112 or slandering believers Al-Ahzab 33:58.
- Earning material wealth: The Quran urges spending from pure, lawful earnings that one has gathered, warning against offering inferior or tainted goods in charity Al-Baqarah 2:267, Al-Mu'minun 23:51, Al-Baqarah 2:172. In contrast, it severely condemns illicit earnings, such as taking bribes or altering divine scriptures for worldly payment Al-Baqarah 2:79.

Recompense for earning
From the paper: «جزاء الكسب»
Allah establishes accountability upon pure justice. Every individual is held pledge to what they have earned Al-Baqarah 2:286, At-Tur 52:21, Al-Muddaththir 74:38-40. No soul bears the burden or guilt of another An-Nisa 4:111, Al-An'am 6:164, and historical generations are judged solely by their own deeds Al-Baqarah 2:134. Even in corporate crimes, such as the false accusation against Aisha, recompense is assigned according to each person's exact share in the transgression An-Nur 24:11.
Divine justice holds people accountable for voluntary, intentional deeds while excusing unintentional acts or involuntary heart leanings At-Takwir 81:29, Al-Baqarah 2:225. Furthermore, Allah does not hasten punishment; He grants respite to wrongdoers so that sinners may repent or believers emerge from their lineage Al-Kahf 18:58, Fatir 35:45. In His immense grace, He forgives and pardons far more than He penalizes, and worldly tribulations often serve as expiations for human errors Ash-Shura 42:30, Ash-Shura 42:33-34. On the Day of Judgment, limbs will testify to what hands and feet earned Ya-Sin 36:65, ensuring total fairness where no one suffers an increase in penalty or a decrease in earned reward Al-Jathiyah 45:22, Ibrahim 14:51, Ghafir 40:17, Ali 'Imran 3:25, Al-Baqarah 2:281.

The consequence of earning
From the paper: «عاقبة الكسب»
The consequences of human earning manifest in both worldly life and the hereafter. Those who earn righteousness receive the broad goodness of this world, including lawful provision, wholesome living, and beneficial knowledge, culminating in entrance into Paradise and safety from punishment Al-Baqarah 2:201-202.
Conversely, evil earnings yield bitter fruits. In this world, sin strips away blessings, breeds widespread corruption on land and sea Ar-Rum 30:41, brings economic distress Ta-Ha 20:124-127, and subjects communities to unjust rulers Al-A'raf 7:96, Al-An'am 6:129. Criminals like thieves face worldly penal measures Al-Ma'idah 5:38. Deeds performed for ostentation collapse like dust blown off a smooth rock or ashes scattered by a fierce wind, leaving the worker empty-handed Al-Baqarah 2:264, Ibrahim 14:18. Hypocrites face disgrace here and sorrow hereafter At-Tawbah 9:82, At-Tawbah 9:95. In the afterlife, wrongdoers are enveloped in darkness and humiliation, while mutual curses erupt between misguiding leaders and their followers, all reaping the torment they earned Al-Baqarah 2:81, Al-Baqarah 2:79, Al-A'raf 7:39, An-Nahl 16:88, Yunus 10:27.

Takeaways
Pair Prayer with Practical Effort
True reliance on Allah does not mean abandoning practical means. The Quran notes that believers receive what they prayed for through what they earned, teaching you to couple heartfelt supplication with diligent, lawful effort.
Guard the Purity of Your Livelihood
Only wholesome earnings bring light to the heart and acceptance to charity. Consuming or spending from tainted sources bars supplications from being answered and strips divine blessing from your life.
Act Before Opportunity Closes
Righteous deeds and sincere repentance are accepted while you possess free choice. Strive to earn good today, because when sudden death or cosmic signs arrive, involuntary faith holds no value.
Never Blame Others for Your Sins
Every soul is held in pledge by its own actions. Recognizing that you alone carry the responsibility for your deliberate choices protects you from deflecting guilt or slandering the innocent.
Reflect
- When you examine your daily work and income, how confident are you that what enters your household is entirely wholesome and pleasing to Allah?
- In what areas of your life are you asking Allah for good outcomes without putting in the honest striving and practical means required?
- Knowing that unintentional slips are forgiven but deliberate sins are recorded, how can you better guard your deliberate choices today?

Technical meaning
In technical terms, al-Jurjani defined earning as that which leads to obtaining a benefit or repelling a harm. Al-Tabari noted that its root is direct human labor, such that whoever carries out an action through direct engagement and craft is considered the earner of that deed.
