At a glance
Human beings are naturally inclined to look at others and imitate their behavior. We constantly compare our state to those around us, naturally adopting their speech, manners, and habits. Because this drive to copy others is built into human nature, having the right role models is one of the most powerful influences shaping a person's faith and character.
The Quran presents role models in two distinct categories: good and evil. Righteous exemplars, led by the prophets, guide humanity toward truth, justice, and devotion through deeds that match their words. In contrast, corrupt leaders, rebellious tyrants, and misguiding companions drag their followers toward spiritual ruin. Blind imitation of ancestral customs or powerful figures strips a person of moral agency and accountability.
Every believer is called to consciously select who they emulate. By examining the living examples preserved in the Quran, from steadfast prophets and righteous leaders to those who fell into devastating destruction, you learn how to pattern your daily actions after those who truly earned the pleasure of Allah.
Key verses

Types of role models
From the paper: «أنواع القدوة»
Human nature is disposed toward comparing oneself to others. When this instinct is guided by good, it leads to moral excellence; when directed toward vanity or worldly wealth, it breeds envy and ruin. The Quran divides role models into two clear paths:
- Good role models: Following others in virtue and upright morals. A true guide leads by action before speech, avoiding the contradiction rebuked in Al-Baqarah 2:44. The primary models are the prophets Al-Ahzab 33:21, Al-A'raf 7:158, An-Nur 24:54, Al-Mumtahanah 60:4, Al-An'am 6:90, and Hud 11:88, followed by the Companions At-Tawbah 9:100, Al-Ankabut 29:49, righteous scholars Ali 'Imran 3:18, Fatir 35:28, Al-Ankabut 29:43, Az-Zumar 39:9, sincere believers Ya-Sin 36:20, Al-Qasas 28:20, righteous parents At-Tur 52:21, Yusuf 12:38, Al-Kahf 18:82, and faithful companions Al-Kahf 18:28, At-Tawbah 9:40.
- Bad role models: Emulating others in evil, falsehood, and transgression. The Quran warns against Satan Fatir 35:6, Ibrahim 14:22, arrogant despots and tyrants like Pharaoh Hud 11:97-98, Ibrahim 14:21, Ghafir 40:47-48, who will disown their followers. It condemns the blind imitation of disbelieving ancestors Al-Baqarah 2:170, Al-Baqarah 2:165, Al-Baqarah 2:166, Al-Baqarah 2:168-169, Luqman 31:21, Al-Ma'idah 5:104, Hud 11:109, and corrupt companions Al-Furqan 25:27-28, Ali 'Imran 3:11, Ta-Ha 20:16 whose influence drags people down.

Importance and effects of role models
From the paper: «أهمية القدوة وآثارها»
Role models deeply shape human development because people are naturally wired to copy and imitate. Every day in prayer, believers recite Al-Fatihah 1:6 and Al-Fatihah 1:7, asking Allah to keep them on the path of those He has blessed while avoiding those who went astray.
Prophets were sent as flesh-and-blood human beings to translate divine law into living reality An-Nahl 16:43-44, Al-Ahzab 33:21. Children mirror their parents and teachers, which is why righteous parents pray to be foremost exemplars for the mindful Al-Furqan 25:74, Yusuf 12:38, Luqman 31:17. Imitation is driven by inner inclination, developmental readiness, and a desired goal, which is why conscious, purposeful emulation transforms character Yusuf 12:108.
Living with righteous exemplars produces profound individual and social fruits:
- Individual growth: Cultivates constant mindfulness of Allah Qaf 50:16, builds moral resolve against tyranny, fosters balanced conduct, reveals blind spots, and secures righteous companionship on the Day of Judgment Az-Zukhruf 43:67-68.
- Social solidarity: Promotes mutual aid in righteousness Al-Ma'idah 5:2, creates community cohesion through shared moral duty At-Tawbah 9:71, and strengthens communal patience in difficult times.
A society suffers from ethical poverty when genuine role models disappear, especially when leaders indulge in superficiality, heedlessness, or worldly compromise.
«تعد القدوة الحسنة أفضل أساليب التربية وأقربها إلى النجاح، فالإنسان في طبعه يميل إلى التقليد والمحاكاة، فإذا كان المحاكي قدوة تأصلت في المقتدي الخلال الطيبة والخصال الكريمة والقيم الرفيعة.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Good role models in the Quran and guidelines for emulation
From the paper: «أولًا: نماذج من القدوة الحسنة في القرآن الكريم ومعالم الاقتداء بهم»
The Quran highlights remarkable figures who embody the highest ideals of faith and practice:
- Ibrahim: Described as an entire community within himself An-Nahl 16:120-122, a solitary beacon of virtue. He obeyed Allah faithfully, rejected all polytheism, and was chosen as a leader for humanity after enduring severe trials Al-Baqarah 2:124, An-Nahl 16:123, Al-Baqarah 2:130, Az-Zukhruf 43:23. He exemplified generous hospitality Al-Hijr 15:51, Adh-Dhariyat 51:24, exceptional forbearance At-Tawbah 9:114, Hud 11:75, deep compassion, patience through hardship Al-Ahqaf 46:35, and gentle devotion to his family As-Saffat 37:102, Ibrahim 14:37, Ibrahim 14:40, while bravely challenging idols Al-Anbiya 21:63, Al-Anbiya 21:67, Az-Zukhruf 43:26, Al-Anbiya 21:57, Al-Baqarah 2:25, Al-An'am 6:80.
- Dhul-Qarnayn: A mighty, just ruler blessed with expansive authority Al-Kahf 18:84-86. He established strict justice Al-Kahf 18:87-88, remained humble before his subjects Al-Kahf 18:94, refused bribes Al-Kahf 18:94-95, mobilized the public to build defensive works together, oversaw engineering projects personally Al-Kahf 18:96, and attributed all success to Allah's mercy Al-Kahf 18:98.
- The wife of Pharaoh (Asiyah): A striking model of unwavering conviction At-Tahrim 66:11. Living under an oppressive king, she renounced royal luxury, endured torment, and prayed for a house near Allah in Paradise, showing that a woman's faith can stand firm regardless of societal pressure.

Bad role models in the Quran and guidelines for emulation
From the paper: «ثانيًا: نماذج من القدوة السيئة في القرآن الكريم ومعالم الاقتداء بهم»
The Quran illustrates evil role models to warn believers against following in their destructive paths:
- Pharaoh: The archetype of tyranny, vanity, and self-deification Yunus 10:92, Hud 11:96-99, Al-Qasas 28:4, Yunus 10:83, Al-Mu'minun 23:46, An-Nazi'at 79:17-26. He displayed unchecked arrogance Ta-Ha 20:45, Al-Fajr 89:11, Al-Qasas 28:39-41, Yunus 10:75, Al-Mu'minun 23:45-46, widespread injustice Al-Qasas 28:39-43, An-Naml 27:14, and corruption by oppressing his people and slaughtering innocent children Al-Qasas 28:4, Al-A'raf 7:103. His corpse was preserved as an enduring sign of where authoritarian pride leads.
- The first son of Adam (Cain): Driven by jealousy, he initiated the very first murder on earth Al-Ma'idah 5:27, Al-Ma'idah 5:28-30, Al-Ma'idah 5:32. By pioneering cold-blooded violence, he assumed a share of the sin of every wrongful killing committed after him.
- The wives of Nuh and Lut: Despite being married to noble prophets, both women betrayed the divine message through disbelief and hostility At-Tahrim 66:10, Al-A'raf 7:82-83, Al-Hijr 15:57-60, Ash-Shu'ara 26:170-171, An-Naml 27:57, Al-Ankabut 29:33, As-Saffat 37:135, Adh-Dhariyat 51:32-37, Al-A'raf 7:84, Al-Hijr 15:74-75, Ash-Shu'ara 26:174, Al-Ankabut 29:35, As-Saffat 37:137-138. They show that proximity to righteous individuals cannot save someone who refuses personal faith and obedience.

Takeaways
Match Your Deeds to Your Words
People are influenced far more by what you do than by what you say. Ensure your personal conduct reflects the advice and reminders you give to others.
Build a Conscious Home Environment
Children learn primarily through observing their parents. Practice daily worship, honesty, and kindness visibly so that Islamic values become second nature to them.
Choose Companions with Care
Your close friends actively shape your character and habits. Surround yourself with people who remind you of Allah and encourage you toward righteous actions.
Break Free from Blind Conformity
Never justify wrong behavior simply because it is an ancestral custom or popular cultural trend. Evaluate all actions under the light of divine guidance.
Initiate Good Habits in Your Community
Whenever you pioneer a beneficial deed or charitable effort, you gain the reward for that act along with the rewards of all who follow your lead.
Reflect
- Who are the main figures you look up to right now, and do their lives mirror the values of the Quran?
- In what subtle ways might your daily actions be influencing those who observe you at home or at work?
- Is there a personal habit you need to change so that your behavior aligns more honestly with what you profess?
- How can you actively cultivate friendships that encourage you to grow closer to Allah?

How it differs from related terms
- الأسوة Exemplar
- The paper notes that al-uswah and al-qudwah are direct synonyms, both signifying following another person's example and adopting their pattern of behavior, whether good or bad.
- الاتباع Following
- Al-ittiba' means following in the tracks or footsteps of someone, whether physically or by obeying commands. Emulating someone necessarily implies following them, as true imitation cannot exist without active following.
