Surah Al-Kahf 18:96 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

ءَاتُونِى زُبَرَ ٱلْحَدِيدِ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا سَاوَىٰ بَيْنَ ٱلصَّدَفَيْنِ قَالَ ٱنفُخُوا۟ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَعَلَهُۥ نَارًۭا قَالَ ءَاتُونِىٓ أُفْرِغْ عَلَيْهِ قِطْرًۭا

English: bring me lumps of iron!’ and then, when he had filled the gap between the two mountainsides [he said], ‘Work your bellows!’ and then, when he had made it glow like fire, he said, ‘Bring me molten metal to pour over it!’

Bengali: তোমরা আমাকে লোহার পাত এনে দাও। অবশেষে যখন পাহাড়ের মধ্যবর্তী ফাঁকা স্থান পূর্ণ হয়ে গেল, তখন তিনি বললেনঃ তোমরা হাঁপরে দম দিতে থাক। অবশেষে যখন তা আগুনে পরিণত হল, তখন তিনি বললেনঃ তোমরা গলিত তামা নিয়ে এস, আমি তা এর উপরে ঢেলে দেই।

Meaning & Reflection

'Bring me sheets of iron — until, when he had leveled it between the two cliffs, he said: Blow — until, when he had made it fire, he said: Bring me molten copper to pour over it.' al-Saadi and Ibn Kathir note the meticulous, competent execution — he does not merely wish the barrier into being but organises real labour, materials, and skill into a structure of iron fused with copper. Ask yourself: his reliance on God did not make him passive or vague — it made him *effective*. He gathered materials, directed the work, engineered a genuine solution. Trust in God and diligent, skilful effort are not opposites; here they are joined. I sometimes use 'tawakkul' (reliance on God) as an excuse for not doing the hard, practical work, or I work frantically as if it all depended on me alone. Dhul-Qarnayn shows the union: pour real effort and competence into the task, precisely *because* God is the one who enables it. Am I combining trust with genuine, skilled effort — or splitting them?
