Surah Al-Kahf 18:84 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

سُورَةُ الكَهۡفِ · Meccan · Verse 84 of 110

إِنَّا مَكَّنَّا لَهُۥ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُ مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ سَبَبًۭا

English: We established his power in the land, and gave him the means to achieve everything.

Bengali: আমি তাকে পৃথিবীতে প্রতিষ্ঠিত করেছিলাম এবং প্রত্যেক বিষয়ের কার্যোপকরণ দান করেছিলাম।

Meaning & Reflection

'Indeed, We established him firmly upon the earth and gave him means to everything.' al-Saadi and Ibn Kathir note the source of his power stated plainly — 'inna makkanna lahu': it was *God* who established him and gave him access ('sabab') to accomplish his aims. His might was a grant, not a self-made achievement. Ask yourself: the very framing corrects the delusion of the powerful — that their reach is their own doing. Dhul-Qarnayn's authority, like all authority, was *given*. Whatever means I have — my abilities, my position, my resources — arrived the same way: established for me, granted, not generated by me. Remembering that power is a trust handed over, not a possession earned outright, is the entire difference between the tyrant and the servant. Do I hold my 'means to everything' as mine to wield as I please, or as a trust I will answer for?

Grounded in classical tafsir: al-Saadi, Ibn Kathir, Ibn Ashur.
