At a glance
In the Quranic worldview, economic life is neither a selfish pursuit of material gain nor a cycle driven by inherent natural scarcity. Rather, the entire universe is created by Allah as an abundant, purposeful trust, specifically subjected to human stewardship. Allah has deposited balanced sustenance in the earth and endowed humanity with intellect, strength, and resources so they may build a thriving world in worship of Him.
Economic hardship and poverty do not arise from a lack of divine generosity; they stem from human injustice, inequitable distribution, greed, and neglect of ethical boundaries. The Quran balances personal ownership with collective well-being, protecting private property while demanding active charity, mutual solidarity, and honest circulation of wealth.
Ultimately, Islamic economics is inextricably tied to moral character. Work is honored as a dignified form of worship, transactions are rooted in strict justice and truthfulness, and destructive practices like interest, hoarding, and monopolies are outlawed to ensure that material prosperity serves spiritual flourishing.

Economic resources
From the paper: «الموارد الاقتصادية»
Allah has established humanity as trustees on earth to cultivate its lands and invest its abundant resources. Every resource, from food, water, and clothing to timber, stone, and subterranean minerals, is an expression of Allah's comprehensive divine care Al-Fatihah 1:2, Al-Kahf 18:1, Ibrahim 14:32, Al-A'raf 7:26, An-Nahl 16:81. Allah created all things in measured wisdom Al-Hijr 15:21, opening new discoveries, such as coal and petroleum Al-Waqi'ah 56:71-72, as human needs expand.
The Quran refutes the notion of natural scarcity found in secular models. Earth contains sufficient sustenance Fussilat 41:9-10, and global hardship is the consequence of human oppression, unjust distribution, and ingratitude Ibrahim 14:34. Resolving economic distress requires establishing equitable systems and exploring nature's stored treasures through deliberate human effort Al-Baqarah 2:29.
Three foundational economic resources stand out in the Quran:
- The Earth: Subdued and paved for human movement and development Al-Mulk 67:15, stabilized with mountains Al-Anbiya 21:31, stretched out with varied fertile soils Ar-Ra'd 13:3-4, and blessed with measured provisions to sustain living beings Ar-Rahman 55:10, Abasa 80:27, Fussilat 41:9-10.
- The Human Being: Endowed with intellect, knowledge, and capability to build and cultivate the world Hud 11:61, Al-A'raf 7:10, Al-Baqarah 2:30, an obligation the Prophet reinforced through reviving uncultivated land and planting trees.
- Labor and Striving: Vigorously pursuing Allah's bounty through purposeful work Al-Jumu'ah 62:10, Al-Muzzammil 73:20. The alternation of night and day organizes this productive rhythm Al-Isra 17:12, Al-Qasas 28:73, An-Naba 78:11, ensuring self-reliance and communal sovereignty.

Production
From the paper: «الإنتاج»
Allah did not merely grant raw matter; He taught humankind how to manufacture and innovate Ibrahim 14:34, Al-Alaq 96:3-5, granting tools of perception, reason, and writing An-Nahl 16:78, Al-Baqarah 2:282. He taught Prophet Dawud the art of interlocking mail armor to preserve human life Al-Anbiya 21:80, modeling how communities must develop industrial defenses and technological capabilities Al-Anfal 8:60.
The default legal ruling governing productive activity is general permissibility. Allah created everything on earth for humankind's lawful benefit Al-Baqarah 2:29, Al-Jathiyah 45:13, forbidding only what explicit revelation designates as harmful Yunus 10:59. The Quran censures those who arbitrarily prohibit lawful good things Al-A'raf 7:32. Importantly, the material world serves humankind, not the reverse; human dignity must never be enslaved to machinery or subordinate to material output.
The Quran directs attention to diverse fields of productive enterprise:
- Agriculture: The foundation of life, providing essential grains, fruits, and sustenance Abasa 80:24-32, alongside forward-looking storage strategies illustrated by Prophet Yusuf Yusuf 12:47.
- Commerce: Legitimate buying and selling to circulate wealth and goods Al-Baqarah 2:275, encouraged through seeking divine bounty across the earth Al-Jumu'ah 62:9-10.
- Industry and Crafts: Essential trades highlighted across scripture, including ironworking Saba 34:10-11, sewing Al-A'raf 7:22, spinning An-Nahl 16:92, hunting Al-Ma'idah 5:2, seafaring Al-Kahf 18:79, and construction Ash-Shu'ara 26:149. Learning crafts elevates human dignity, fosters humility, and provides halal sustenance.
- Animal, Water, and Mineral Resources: Raising livestock An-Nahl 16:5, Ta-Ha 20:54, fishing and maritime transport An-Nahl 16:14, and extracting metals for civilizational infrastructure Al-Hadid 57:25.

Economic principles
From the paper: «المبادئ الاقتصادية»
The Quran institutes economic legislation aligned with human nature, affirming private ownership while safeguarding public interests:
- Private Property: The human inclination toward ownership is recognized Al-Adiyat 100:8, motivating diligent labor and investment. Allah addresses wealth as personal possessions Al-Qasas 28:77 and establishes natural disparities in wealth as a social mechanism for mutual cooperation and service Az-Zukhruf 43:32, Fatir 35:43, An-Nahl 16:71. Property is protected from usurpation Al-Baqarah 2:188, Al-An'am 6:152, Al-Ma'idah 5:38, and acquired lawfully through inheritance An-Nisa 4:11, trade Al-Baqarah 2:275, gifts Sad 38:35, and labor Al-Mulk 67:15.
- Preserving Public Wealth: Wealth is a fundamental universal necessity underpinning communal life An-Nisa 4:5. While personal goods remain private, vital public utilities, roads, waterways, and state revenues, such as collective spoils (al-fay'), belong to the entire community to prevent elitist monopolies Al-Hashr 59:7. Misappropriating public funds (al-ghulul) is an egregious crime punished severely on the Day of Judgment Ali 'Imran 3:161.
- Safeguarding Private Rights: Financial transactions require meticulous documentation, independent witnessing, and pledges Al-Baqarah 2:282. Similarly, inheritance shares are immutably distributed by divine law to prevent family conflict An-Nisa 4:11.
- Social Solidarity: Compassionate community care is realized through mandatory Zakah distributed to the poor, needy, debt-ridden, and other designated categories At-Tawbah 9:60, ensuring stability and preventing social unrest. Voluntary charity multiplies reward enormously Al-Baqarah 2:261, alongside mutual sacrifice in collective defense At-Tawbah 9:41, As-Saff 61:10-13, and expiations (kaffarat) feeding the destitute Al-Ma'idah 5:89, Al-Baqarah 2:184, Al-Mujadilah 58:4.
«وهكذا يقرر القرآن الكريم مبدأ الملكية العامة في الأمة ويحترمها، ولكنه لا يجعلها تطغى وتستبد على الملكية الخاصة، بل إنه يوازن بين الملكيتين بما يحقق لكل منهما مصلحته، ودون أن تطغى إحداهما على الأخرى.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Protecting the economy from factors of corruption
From the paper: «حماية الاقتصاد من عوامل الفساد»
To shield the economic order from collapse and exploitation, divine law prohibits several destructive behaviors:
- Usury and Interest (al-riba): Outlawed for extracting unearned surplus without engaging in productive labor Al-Baqarah 2:275. Usury fuels inflation, rewards indolence, and sows animosity, incurring the deprivation of divine blessing and an ultimatum of war from Allah and His Messenger Al-Baqarah 2:276, Ar-Rum 30:39, Al-Baqarah 2:279.
- Monopoly (al-ihtikar): Restricting essential goods to inflate prices artificially is an unjust seizure of people's wealth Al-Baqarah 2:188 that concentrates resources exclusively among the wealthy Al-Hashr 59:7.
- Incompetence and Recklessness (al-safah): Safeguarding capital requires placing legal holds on the property of reckless individuals or orphans until they reach financial maturity An-Nisa 4:5-6.
- Wasteful Extravagance (al-israf): Spending beyond one's means or exceeding moderation impoverishes families and exhausts productive resources Al-Isra 17:29, Al-A'raf 7:31.
- Dealing in Prohibited Goods: Trading in alcohol, gambling, and narcotics paralyzes human productivity, relies on delusions of chance, fosters hatred, and invites crime Al-Ma'idah 5:90-91.
- Hoarding Wealth (kanz al-mal): Freezing capital and withholding obligatory financial duties like Zakah halts circulation and harms society, threatening hoarders with agonizing punishment in the Hereafter At-Tawbah 9:34-35.
«فبين تعالى أنه لا يريد أن يجعل المال دولة بين الأغنياء فحسب، أي: يتداولونه دون غيرهم، بل يريد أن يجعل المال دولة بين الناس، والاحتكار من أعظم الأسباب التي تجعل المال دولة بين الأغنياء، يتحكمون به في قوتهم، ويحددون سعر بيعه لهم.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Economics and ethics
From the paper: «الاقتصاد والأخلاق»
In Islam, economic conduct cannot be detached from moral values. Spiritual piety, obedience, and regular seeking of forgiveness directly generate earthly blessings, rainfall, and financial abundance Al-A'raf 7:96, Nuh 71:10-12.
Ethical duties take precedence over raw monetary gain. Believers must forgo trade when the Friday call to prayer sounds Al-Jumu'ah 62:9, prioritize divine remembrance over business An-Nur 24:37, and bear temporary financial losses rather than compromise religious principles At-Tawbah 9:28. Prophet Sulayman rejected lavish gifts designed to bribe him into abandoning truth An-Naml 27:36.
Transactions must rest on absolute justice and transparency, avoiding all forms of theft, bribery, and deception Al-Baqarah 2:188. The Quran warns severely against fraudulent traders who manipulate weights and measures to cheat buyers Al-A'raf 7:85, Al-Mutaffifin 83:1-3, commanding strict fulfillment of contracts and financial pledges Al-Ma'idah 5:1, Al-Isra 17:34. Furthermore, the Quran demands craftsmanship, precision, and excellence (itqan) in all manual and professional work, as exemplified in Dawud's meticulous weaving of armor Saba 34:11.
«أي: أن أكل المال يجب أن يكون بالحق والعدل، لا بالباطل والجور، وبهذا النهي الواضح الصريح عن أكل المال بالباطل يوضح القرآن العلاقة بين الاقتصاد والأخلاق ومدى ارتباطهما الوثيق.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Takeaways
Abundance Is the Norm; Injustice Causes Want
Recognize that Allah has equipped the earth with ample resources to meet human needs Ibrahim 14:34. Instead of adopting a cynical mindset of scarcity, work to eliminate waste, advocate for fair distribution, and trust in divine generosity.
Honorable Work Is an Act of Worship
Striving to earn halal sustenance through manual crafts, agriculture, trade, or professional enterprise fulfills your role as a trustee on earth Al-Mulk 67:15, Al-Jumu'ah 62:10. Dedicate your labor to Allah and free yourself from dependency on others.
Balance Spending and Guard Against Extremes
Maintain a disciplined financial path between stinginess and wasteful overspending Al-Isra 17:29. Spend reasonably according to your genuine means and avoid taking on frivolous debts that invite financial ruin.
Keep Wealth Flowing to Benefit Society
Do not hoard stagnant funds or withhold charitable obligations At-Tawbah 9:34-35. Fulfill your mandatory Zakah, offer voluntary charity, and ensure your capital actively serves productive and communal welfare Al-Hashr 59:7.
Never Sacrifice Moral Integrity for Financial Profit
Honesty in weights, measures, agreements, and contract terms is an absolute requirement, not an optional preference Al-Mutaffifin 83:1-3, Al-Ma'idah 5:1. Refuse fraudulent dealings, interest, and unlawful shortcuts, trusting that lawful earnings carry true barakah.
Reflect
- How does seeing your material wealth as a temporary trust from Allah change the way you spend and save?
- In what ways can you bring greater excellence and conscientiousness into your daily professional work?
- Where in your personal or household budget can you reduce wasteful spending to free up resources for charity?
- How do you balance the demands of career and business with your spiritual duties and regular prayer?

- الإسراف Excessive Spending
- Excessive spending (al-israf) is transgressing the proper limits in spending by going beyond one's lawful means or natural needs, standing as the direct opposite of moderation.
- التبذير Squandering
- Squandering (al-tabdhir) is specifically expending wealth in improper, wrongful, or corrupt avenues, whereas moderation (al-iqtisad) ensures money is directed exclusively toward lawful and balanced purposes.
- البخل Stinginess
