At a glance
The Quran is fundamentally a book through which Allah introduces Himself to His creation. By revealing His most beautiful names and exalted attributes, Allah allows human beings to recognize His absolute majesty, knowledge, and kindness. Knowing who Allah is forms the cornerstone of sound faith and gives true meaning to our lives, dispelling doubt and anxiety.
Studying Allah's attributes is not merely an intellectual pursuit. Every divine attribute carries profound practical and spiritual weight. When you recognize that Allah encompasses all things in knowledge and mercy, your heart turns toward Him with genuine hope, deep reverence, and humble submission. Knowing Him changes how you view yourself, your trials, and the universe around you.
Throughout the Quran, believers are called to affirm what Allah and His Messenger have affirmed about His noble essence, without denying His words or attempting to liken Him to created things. This knowledge is the highest and most beneficial of all sciences, guiding the servant safely toward true devotion in this world and eternal bliss in the next.

Methodology of the righteous predecessors in believing in Allah attributes
From the paper: «
The methodology of early righteous generations (Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah) in approaching the divine names and attributes rests on pure revelation. These attributes are entirely non-negotiable and revelation-dependent (tawqifiyyah); no one has the right to ascribe any name or description to Allah without explicit proof from the Quran or sound prophetic teaching, as speaking about Allah without knowledge is strictly prohibited Al-A'raf 7:33.
When affirming Allah's attributes, early scholars established a three-part framework: affirming the name itself, affirming the inherent divine attribute it conveys, and affirming its real effects and legal rulings. For instance, affirming the name al-Basir (the All-Seeing) Ash-Shura 42:11 requires affirming the real quality of vision that encompasses all things, visible even in the quietest whisper Al-Mujadilah 58:1, which instills watchfulness in the believer. Non-transitive names like al-Hayy (the Ever-Living) Al-Furqan 25:58 require affirming both the divine title and the absolute life it entails.
Scholar Muhammad al-Amin al-Shinqiti summarized this Quranic approach in three pillars: strictly purifying Allah from resembling creation Ash-Shura 42:11, Al-Ikhlas 112:4, An-Nahl 16:74; wholeheartedly believing in how Allah and His Messenger describe Him Al-Baqarah 2:140; and acknowledging that human minds cannot grasp the precise reality or manner (kayfiyyah) of His essence Ash-Shura 42:11. Equating the Creator to creation is misguidance Ash-Shu'ara 26:97-98, while denying what Allah affirmed about Himself out of fear of resemblance is equally corrupt.

Types of attributes of Allah Almighty
From the paper: «
The research categorizes Allah's attributes into three broad divisions:
- **Essential Attributes (al-sifat al-dhatiyyah):** Qualities that inhere permanently in the divine essence and are inseparable from it. Examples include knowledge, power, sight, and majesty, as well as narrative attributes (khabariyyah) such as the Face Ar-Rahman 55:27, Al-Qasas 28:88, Al-Kahf 18:28, Al-Insan 76:9, the Hands Sad 38:75, Al-Mulk 67:1, Ya-Sin 36:71, and the Eyes At-Tur 52:48, Al-Qamar 54:13-14. These are taken upon their reality in a manner befitting Allah's perfection, free of human likeness or physical decomposition.
- **Action-based Attributes (al-sifat al-fi'liyyah):** Qualities tied to Allah's divine will and wisdom; if He wills He performs them, and if He wills He does not Ya-Sin 36:82, Al-Insan 76:30. Examples include ascending over the Throne (al-istiwa') Ta-Ha 20:5, Al-A'raf 7:54, descending to judge creation Al-Fajr 89:22, and showing genuine love Al-Baqarah 2:195, pardon An-Nisa 4:149, An-Nur 24:22, and honor Al-Munafiqun 63:8, Fatir 35:10. Imam Malik articulated the balance regarding istiwa': the meaning is known, the manner is beyond human comprehension, believing in it is obligatory, and questioning its modality is an innovation.
- **Reciprocal Actions (sifat muqabalah):** Verbs in the Quran that describe Allah responding justly to human transgressions, such as scheming against evil plots Ali 'Imran 3:54, An-Naml 27:50-51, mocking hypocrisy Al-Baqarah 2:14-15, or turning away in recompense (al-nisyan) At-Tawbah 9:67, Al-A'raf 7:51. These cannot be turned into unrestricted names like 'The Schemer', nor affirmed without their context. They represent perfect justice and recompense against unjust plotters.

Evidence affirming attributes of perfection for Allah Almighty
From the paper: «
Divine perfection is affirmed through three complementary sources:
- **Innate Human Nature (al-fitrah):** Every person is naturally created with an intrinsic recognition of their Creator and a longing for absolute perfection Ar-Rum 30:30. In moments of extreme distress, when worldly supports collapse, innate nature instinctively compels even hardened deniers to call upon Allah alone Luqman 31:25, Al-Ankabut 29:65. Uncorrupted human disposition naturally affirms that a true God must possess all qualities of perfection and be free of any flaw.
- Textual Evidence (Scripture and Sunnah): Revelation is the safe and definitive path for knowing the unseen details of Allah's names and actions. Passages across the Quran, from the opening chapter to short surahs like al-Ikhlas, systematically present Allah's hearing, vision, speech, and mercy across every form of linguistic signification.
- **Sound Reason (al-'aql):** Sound intellect observes the order of the cosmos and deduces that every created effect requires a powerful, wise, and knowing Originator. Reason uses the Quranic principle of the highest comparison (qiyas al-awla): any genuine perfection found in creation without deficiency is inherently more deserving of being attributed to the Creator Al-Ghashiyah 88:17, Al-Isra 17:42-44. However, reason functions as a follower and witness to divine revelation, not an independent arbiter capable of grasping the intricate details of divine reality Ta-Ha 20:110.

The Quranic approach to presenting the attributes of Allah
From the paper: «
The primary objective of the Quran is to inform humanity about Allah's majestic self, noble names, exalted deeds, and supreme wisdom. It employs diverse presentation styles to engage the human soul:
First, the Quran declares names and attributes directly, teaching believers about Allah's sovereign majesty Ar-Ra'd 13:2, everlasting life and sustenance Al-Baqarah 2:255, unmatched excellence Ta-Ha 20:8, encompassing knowledge alongside creation Al-Baqarah 2:29, and supreme bounty Al-Baqarah 2:105, Al-Baqarah 2:163. Specific actions, like His ascent over the Throne, are repeated across seven distinct chapters Al-A'raf 7:54, Yunus 10:3, Ar-Ra'd 13:2, Ta-Ha 20:5, Al-Furqan 25:59, As-Sajdah 32:4, Al-Hadid 57:4.
Second, the Quran directs reflection toward created wonders An-Naba 78:6-16, guiding the observer from the mastery of cosmic design to the wisdom and power of its Maker. Third, it continuously reminds servants of unceasing divine favors An-Nahl 16:18, awakening gratitude and reverence toward the generous Giver.
Fourth, it lays bare human vulnerability and utter poverty in contrast to Allah's absolute self-sufficiency Fatir 35:15, Al-Baqarah 2:21-22. Fifth, it addresses human intellect through logical challenges, dismantling idolatry by demonstrating the complete helplessness of false gods At-Tur 52:35-36, An-Nahl 16:17, Saba 34:22.
Finally, the Quran vigorously refutes distorted notions of divinity, rebuking claims of divine stinginess by declaring His hands extended in generosity Al-Ma'idah 5:64, Ghafir 40:71, and responding to inquiries about Allah's lineage by revealing the pure monotheism of Surah al-Ikhlas Al-Ikhlas 112:1-2.

Attributes negated from Allah Almighty
From the paper: «
Divine attributes divide into affirmative qualities (al-sifat al-thubutiyyah) and negated qualities (al-sifat al-salbiyyah). Affirmative attributes represent real perfections like life, knowledge, power, and mercy, which are detailed extensively throughout revelation. In contrast, negated attributes are deficiencies that Allah has explicitly negated regarding Himself, such as death, sleep, ignorance, fatigue, and injustice.
In Islamic creed, negating a defect is never an end in itself, because pure absence contains no intrinsic praise. Rather, every negation in the Quran is stated specifically to affirm the consummate perfection of its opposite:
- Negating death Al-Furqan 25:58 affirms the absolute eternity and perfection of His life.
- Negating injustice Al-Kahf 18:49 affirms the totality of His absolute justice.
- Negating incapacity Fatir 35:44 affirms the perfection of both His all-encompassing knowledge and limitless power.
The Quran mentions negated qualities primarily under three circumstances: to express the comprehensive scope of His supreme perfection Al-Ikhlas 112:3-4; to refute specific falsehoods fabricated by deniers, such as attributing a spouse or offspring to the Most Merciful Maryam 19:91-93; or to dispel any fleeting suspicion of deficiency regarding His actions, such as declaring that the cosmos was never created in vain amusement Al-Isra 17:111, Al-Anbiya 21:16.
«والصفات الثبوتية صفات مدح وكمال فكلما كثرت وتنوعت دلالاتها ظهر من كمال الموصوف بها ما هو أكثر، ولهذا كانت الصفات الثبوتية التي أخبر الله بها عن نفسه أكثر بكثير من الصفات السلبية كما هو معلوم.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Fruits of believing in the attributes of Allah Almighty
From the paper: «
Living with an awareness of Allah's attributes transforms a believer's inner and outer life. When you grasp that Allah is al-Rahman (the Most Merciful) and al-Hayiyy (the Generous and Modest), supplication turns into an intimate act of sincere devotion Al-A'raf 7:180, filling the heart with genuine hope and comforting tranquility Ar-Ra'd 13:28, Ash-Shu'ara 26:88-89.
Contemplating these attributes reveals the reality of our earthly existence. Recognizing that life, physical senses, and divine guidance are unearned favors Al-Insan 76:1-3, An-Nahl 16:80-81 inspires spontaneous gratitude (shukr), shielding the heart from resentment An-Nisa 4:147, Yunus 10:62-64. The servant persistently seeks guidance upon the straight path in this life to ensure a secure crossing in the next Fussilat 41:46, Al-Hijr 15:41, Saba 34:24, Hud 11:56, Al-An'am 6:115.
Furthermore, this belief clarifies our ongoing struggle against Satan. Understanding the story of Adam and the deceptive promises of Iblis Al-Baqarah 2:34-37, Al-A'raf 7:12, Al-A'raf 7:17, Fatir 35:6, An-Nahl 16:99, Al-Hijr 15:39-42, Sad 38:82-83 reminds the servant to seek refuge in Allah's protective power Al-Jathiyah 45:36-37.
It also anchors faith in divine decree (qadar). Knowing that Allah's actions balance absolute wisdom, justice, and kindness brings profound peace when enduring trials Al-Qamar 54:49, Al-Qamar 54:54-55, Al-Hadid 57:22, At-Taghabun 64:11. True knowledge of divine attributes ties seamlessly into all forms of worship, uniting belief in His lordship, divinity, and beautiful names into an unshakeable bond of pure monotheism Al-Anbiya 21:22, Al-Mu'minun 23:115-116, Al-Hajj 22:18, Al-Ahqaf 46:4, Muhammad 47:19.

Takeaways
Call Upon Allah with Relevant Names
Structure your supplications by invoking the specific divine name that corresponds directly to your need: ask al-Ghafur for forgiveness, al-Razzaq for provision, and al-Latif for subtle care Al-A'raf 7:180.
Embrace Trials with Inner Tranquility
When painful calamities strike, remind yourself that they originate from Allah's perfect decree, wisdom, and justice, accepting them with patience rather than bitterness At-Taghabun 64:11.
Cultivate Private Watchfulness
Knowing that Allah is the All-Hearing (al-Sami') and All-Seeing (al-Basir) inspires an inner shame and vigilance that guards your heart and private deeds against sin Ash-Shura 42:11.
Walk Between Gratitude and Repentance
Balance your spiritual life between recognizing Allah's overwhelming favors, which fosters love, and acknowledging your own shortcomings, which fosters humility and continuous repentance Fatir 35:15.
Respect the Boundaries of Human Reason
Let your intellect marvel at Allah's creation and confirm His perfection, but refrain from imagining how His divine attributes operate, humbly submitting to revelation Ta-Ha 20:110.
Reflect
- When you call upon Allah in your daily prayers, do you consciously select divine names that match your specific heartache or hope?
- How does remembering that Allah hears every whisper and sees every motion change how you conduct yourself in private?
- In moments of sudden misfortune, what thoughts help your heart settle into the reality of Allah's perfect wisdom and care?
- Where in your life right now are you relying on your limited understanding rather than submitting to what Allah has revealed?

Linguistic meaning
Ibn Faris explained that a quality or attribute (al-sifah) is the necessary, distinguishing mark that inheres in a thing, derived from describing (wasf) something by its qualities.
