بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

Meaning & Reflection

This Surah was revealed as a direct answer: the pagans of Makkah pressed the Prophet, 'Describe your Lord's lineage — what is He made of?' (Ibn Ashur, Ibn Kathir). The reply is a single word — Ahad. Not merely 'one' in number (Wahid), but One who cannot be divided, has no parts, and admits no second of His kind (al-Saadi). al-Biqa'i notes the whole aim of the Surah is pure tawhid — its very name, al-Ikhlas ('sincerity, purity'), because it scours the heart clean of every trace of associating others with Allah. Ask yourself: when I say 'Allah is One', am I only counting — or am I letting that Oneness clear my heart of the smaller 'gods' (approval, wealth, control) I quietly serve alongside Him?
