يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

English: People, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, so that you may be mindful [of Him]

Bengali: হে মানব সমাজ! তোমরা তোমাদের পালনকর্তার এবাদত কর, যিনি তোমাদিগকে এবং তোমাদের পূর্ববর্তীদিগকে সৃষ্টি করেছেন। তাতে আশা করা যায়, তোমরা পরহেযগারী অর্জন করতে পারবে।

Meaning & Reflection

'O people, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become God-conscious.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note this is the Qur'an's very first command — 'u'budu', worship — and its stated *purpose* is not ritual for its own sake but 'taqwa', a God-conscious heart: worship is the means, a transformed self the end. Ask yourself: the first thing I am ever commanded is to worship the One who made me — and the goal is not to tick a box but to become someone shaped by awareness of God. It reframes prayer, fasting, all of it, as tools for producing a certain kind of heart. If my worship is leaving me unchanged — no more conscious of God in my daily choices — then I may be doing the acts while missing their entire point. Is my worship actually making me more God-conscious?
