At a glance

In the Quranic perspective, الغلو ghuluww (extremism) refers to overstepping the limits set by Allah, whether through excessive zeal, harshness, or unwarranted strictness in faith and practice. Religion is perfected by divine revelation, so any attempt to add to it or exceed its boundaries does not bring a person closer to God; instead, it leads away from the straight path into falsehood and spiritual deviation.

Extremism causes immense harm both religiously and socially. On a personal level, it distorts the beauty of the faith, burdens the soul with unsustainable practices, and fosters arrogance. Socially, it fragments communities through hasty accusations of disbelief, intolerance of human shortcomings, and even violence.

The Quran constantly steers believers toward the balanced middle path, commanding justice, moderation, and adherence to sound knowledge over unchecked whims. Understanding the nature and roots of extremism protects a believer from falling into harmful excess while preserving sincere, lifelong devotion.

Key verses

  1. Al-Ma'idah 5:77: Allah commands the People of the Book not to exceed the boundaries in their religion beyond the truth, warning that spiritual extremism stems from following baseless desires and previous misguidance.
  2. Al-Baqarah 2:205: This verse warns against spreading corruption and destruction across the earth, illustrating how extreme self-righteousness often results in devastating social harm rather than true reform.
  3. An-Nisa 4:171: Allah directly forbids the People of the Book from exceeding the limits in their faith and uttering anything about Him except the pure truth, highlighting how doctrinal extremism corrupts core theology.

Harms of extremism

From the paper: «أضرار الغلو»

The Quran makes clear that exceeding divine boundaries produces severe spiritual and worldly devastation, harming both the integrity of religion and human societies.

Religious harms begin with straying from truth. When people exceed bounds, they speak about Allah without knowledge and invent unlawful practices, as warned in An-Nisa 4:171 and Al-Ma'idah 5:77. The paper notes that whoever introduces new rituals implicitly acts as though divine revelation were incomplete, despite Allah's declaration that religion is perfected Al-Ma'idah 5:3. Overstepping turns truth into falsehood Yunus 10:32, leading to grave theological distortions Ali 'Imran 3:79-80 Al-Ma'idah 5:72 Al-Ma'idah 5:73-116 At-Tawbah 9:30.

Harms to creation manifest socially and globally. Extremism is a form of corruption that Allah forbids Al-Baqarah 2:205 Al-Qasas 28:77. Locally, it divides the community, weakening its unity and resolve Al-Anfal 8:46. Extremists claim an exclusive understanding of faith, placing unnecessary hardship on ordinary believers by pretending their harshness is the only true religion Al-Baqarah 2:135-140. Eventually, this self-righteousness leads to accusing fellow Muslims of disbelief and shedding their blood, echoing the mindset that confronted the Prophet At-Tawbah 9:61. Globally, senseless hostility and terror distort Islam's image, actively driving people away from divine mercy Al-Anbiya 21:107.

Types of extremism

From the paper: «أنواع الغلو»

Extremism is not confined to one sphere; it manifests across beliefs, rituals, and everyday behavior.

Doctrinal extremism (al-ghuluww al-i'tiqadi) touches core tenets of theology. In its major form, it elevates righteous people beyond human limits, attributing to them knowledge of the unseen or supernatural power to fulfill ultimate needs, mimicking the pagan mindset rebuked in Yunus 10:18. It also includes declaring ordinary sinful believers to be disbelievers. Lesser forms include non-prescribed devotional practices that risk corrupting belief.

Ritual extremism (al-ghuluww al-ta'abbudi) alters physical acts of worship by adding severe, self-invented restrictions. The paper cites the pre-Islamic practices condemned in Al-A'raf 7:33 and Al-Anfal 8:35, such as naked circumambulation and whistling at the Ka'bah. When invented details multiply, they ultimately undermine divine law.

Behavioral extremism (al-ghuluww al-suluki) shows up as extreme rigidity toward people. The extremist demands flawless perfection, refusing excuses or patience. Yet the Quran calls for balanced moderation in all matters Al-Baqarah 2:143, gentleness with people Al-A'raf 7:199, and balance in spending Al-Isra 17:29-30 Al-Furqan 25:67. Believers must maintain justice An-Nisa 4:135 and embrace pardon Al-Baqarah 2:109 Al-Baqarah 2:83. When harmed, the Quran outlines three tiers of response in Ash-Shura 42:40-43: justice by equal recompense, grace through forgiveness, and wrongdoing by overstepping limits.

«فمن ذلك الغلو بالتشدد في معاملة الناس؛ بحيث لا يصبر على أخطائهم وزلاتهم، ولا يقبل أعذارهم، ولا يقيل عثراتهم، ولا يرضى منهم إلا بمثالية واستقامة تامة لا تكون إلا في النبيين والصديقين.»

Causes of extremism

From the paper: «أسباب الغلو»

Extremism arises from personal spiritual blind spots as well as surrounding social pressures.

Personal causes center on following inner desires (hawa), which the Quran repeatedly pairs with misguidance Al-Ma'idah 5:77 Ta-Ha 20:16 Sad 38:26 Al-Jathiyah 45:23 An-Najm 53:3. Unchecked desire leads people to craft doctrines around their passions. A second root is following the gradual steps of Satan, who tricks individuals into exceeding lawful bounds until they speak about Allah without knowledge Al-Baqarah 2:168-169 An-Nisa 4:119 Al-A'raf 7:16-17. Ignorance is another primary driver, leading people to mimic idolaters Al-A'raf 7:138-139, misapply texts, and rush to excommunicate others. Blind imitation of ancestral traditions without clear evidence Az-Zukhruf 43:15-25, along with obsessing over ambiguous texts (al-mutashabihat) rather than clear foundations Ali 'Imran 3:7-9, further fuels deviation.

Societal and global pressures also catalyze extremist reactions. When believers face persecution, systemic attacks on religion, or acute injustices Al-Baqarah 2:109 Al-Baqarah 2:217, intense anger and frustration can boil over. While external hostility is real and painful, the paper emphasizes that responding with rashness, emotional outbursts, and reckless violence violates Quranic wisdom and only causes deeper destruction.

Manifestations of extremism

From the paper: «مظاهر الغلو»

Extremism reveals itself through tangible behaviors that depart from the merciful moderation of Islam Al-Ma'idah 5:77.

A primary manifestation is takfir (declaring believers to be apostates). Much like historical groups who completely wrote off other communities Al-Baqarah 2:113, sectarian factions brand Muslims who commit sins as disbelievers, expelling them from the fold of faith.

Another manifestation is religious innovation (al-ibtida'). Extremists abandon the clear, straight path of divine guidance to follow diverging side-paths of novelty and speculative theology Al-An'am 6:153 Al-An'am 6:159 An-Nahl 16:9. They burden their souls with excessive hardships that Allah never commanded.

A third sign is violent aggression against human lives and property Al-Baqarah 2:205, often targeting fellow believers more fiercely than anyone else due to radicalized zeal.

Extremists also claim exclusive, esoteric knowledge. Rather than submitting to revealed scripture Al-Qasas 28:50, deviant groups often allege hidden spiritual secrets or infallible leadership to place themselves above critique.

Finally, extreme adulation surfaces as a manifestation. People elevate leaders, teachers, or righteous figures to an status bordering on idolatry, loving, obeying, and entreating them in ways due only to Allah Al-Baqarah 2:165 Al-Baqarah 2:166.

«للغلو مظاهر عديدة كلها تدل على التشدد والمغالاة والتطرف والانحراف عن وسطية الإسلام السمحة؛ فمن ذلك: التكفير، الابتداع في الدين، الاعتداء على الناس وأموالهم، ادعاء العلم والتدين والغلو في المحبة أو الكراهية.»

Remedy for extremism

From the paper: «علاج الغلو»

The paper lays out a practical Quranic roadmap to treat and prevent extremism:

«التجرد في طلب الحق أصل مكين من أصول الهداية، وذلك أن الهوى هو الميل النفسي إلى الشيء؛ فإن وافق الهدى، وإلا هوى بصاحبه.»

Takeaways

  1. Religion is perfected, not enhanced

True righteousness lies in submitting to divine revelation as given, not in inventing extra burdens. Adding excessive strictness under the guise of piety actually reflects a subtle critique of the faith's completeness Al-Ma'idah 5:3.

  2. Temper emotional zeal with sound knowledge

Good intentions alone do not validate an action. Passion without Islamic learning easily falls prey to personal whims and Satanic traps, turning well-meaning people into agents of division Al-Baqarah 2:168-169.

  3. Practice grace and tolerance with others

Expecting moral perfection from ordinary people creates unnecessary hardship. Believers are called to overlook flaws, accept reasonable excuses, and prioritize forgiveness over harsh retaliation Al-A'raf 7:199 Ash-Shura 42:40-43.

  4. Guard your heart against idolizing leaders

Love and respect for scholars or spiritual guides must remain within divine boundaries. Blind allegiance that obeys a human teacher over clear Quranic guidance slips into spiritual overstepping Al-Baqarah 2:165.

  5. Fill your time with wholesome, active deeds

Intellectual idleness invites obsessive hair-splitting and theological rigidness. Channeling energy into regular duties, family, community service, and balanced worship leaves no room for harmful extremes Al-An'am 6:162-163.

Reflect

  • Are there areas in your religious practice where you impose unnecessary harshness upon yourself or your family?
  • When you observe fellow believers making mistakes, do you respond with patience and pardon, or with immediate judgment?
  • How often do you verify your religious opinions against sound scholarship rather than emotional impulse or internet claims?
  • In what ways can you make your home and social circle an encouraging, balanced environment that resists extremism?

Linguistic meaning

Linguistically, the root letters (gh-l-w) signify elevation, height, and exceeding the proper limit or natural value of a thing.

Technical meaning

In religious terminology, it means exceeding the legitimate boundary by exaggerating praise or blame beyond what is deserved, or introducing undue severity into religious practice.

عرفه بعض العلماء بأنه: «مجاوزة الحد، بأن يزاد في الشيء، في حمده أو ذمه على ما يستحق».

How it differs from related terms

الطغيان Tyrannical rebellion
Al-Tughyan refers to exceeding limits through blatant disobedience, usually driven by arrogance, haughtiness, and tyrannical pride, like the behavior of Pharaoh. Extremism (ghuluww), by contrast, does not require arrogance; it frequently stems from excessive zeal among the poor, weak, or ordinary worshippers.
البغي Unjust aggression
Al-Baghy is seeking self-elevation unlawfully with an explicit, initial intent to create corruption and injustice. Extremism oversteps the boundary, but it can arise from a mistaken pursuit of piety rather than an initial desire to cause destruction.
الوسطية The balanced middle path
Al-Wasatiyyah is the equitable center between two opposing, defective extremes: harsh exaggeration and negligent laxity. While extremism clutches stubbornly to excessive strictness, wasatiyyah embodies justice, harmony, and virtue.
