At a glance

The tongue is one of the most astonishing signs of divine craftsmanship in the human body. Though small in size, its reach is limitless: it serves as the primary tool for conveying knowledge, expressing beliefs, tasting nourishment, and building human bonds. Through the gift of speech and the paired movement of the lips, Allah elevated human beings over all other creatures, granting them the ability to learn, reflect, and deliver truth.

Yet this tremendous blessing is a double-edged sword. Because it moves with ease and encounters neither bone nor weariness, the tongue is also humanity's most vulnerable frontier against spiritual ruin. From uttering words of hypocrisy, slander, and disbelief to distorting truth and sowing enmity, the sins of the tongue can undo a person's faith and deeds. It acts as an accurate mirror of what lies hidden inside the chest, for speech is the interpreter of the heart.

In the Quran, speech is intimately bound to moral responsibility. Believers are summoned to guard this bodily instrument with absolute vigilance, filling it with the remembrance of Allah, kind speech, and truthful testimony, mindful of the day when every limb will speak freely to testify for or against its owner.

Key verses

  1. Al-Fath 48:11: Exposes the reality of hypocrites who utter words with their tongues that contradict what is settled in their hearts, proving that true faith requires complete agreement between speech and inner conviction.
  2. Al-Ahzab 33:19: Describes how cowards and hypocrites, while terrified during battle, lash out against believers with sharp, cutting tongues once fear departs, greedy for worldly gain.
  3. Al-Balad 90:9: Reminds humanity of Allah's magnificent favor in giving them a tongue and two lips to articulate knowledge and convey their inner thoughts.
  4. Ash-Shu'ara 26:195: Highlights the nobility and unrivaled clarity of the Arabic language, through which the Quran was revealed to facilitate understanding, contemplation, and warning.
  5. Ash-Shu'ara 26:84: Records Prophet Ibrahim's prayer for enduring praise and an honorable, truthful remembrance among later generations, showing that truthful legacy is a granted gift.
  6. Maryam 19:10: Presents the miraculous sign granted to Zakariyya when his tongue was restrained from speaking to people while remaining entirely sound and capable of divine remembrance.
  7. At-Tawbah 9:74: Warns of the destructive peril of uttering words of disbelief, demonstrating that a single blasphemous statement can annul a person's outward claim to Islam.

The tongue as a sign and a blessing

From the paper: «اللسان آية ونعمة»

Allah reminds humanity of His immense generosity by bestowing the instruments of perception and expression, specifically pairing the eyes with a tongue and two lips Al-Balad 90:8-9. This reminder rebukes human arrogance and heedlessness Al-Balad 90:5, Al-Balad 90:7, establishing that the Creator of sight and speech possesses absolute awareness of all actions Al-Mulk 67:14. The lips are joined with the tongue because clear articulation cannot occur without both working in harmony: the tongue shapes sounds while the lips regulate them, carrying the primary encompassing letters. These visible faculties are in perpetual movement, actively earning reward or spiritual ruin, while Allah has provided guidance toward both righteousness and evil Al-Balad 90:10.

Furthermore, Allah honored humanity by teaching them clear expression, or bayan Ar-Rahman 55:3-4. This gift distinguishes humankind from voiceless animals, enabling the reception of knowledge and the carrying of moral trust, as showcased when Adam spoke the names before the angels Al-Baqarah 2:33. Because knowledge is the most noble endowment and the tongue is its vehicle, scholars describe it as the most honorable limb when employed rightly Al-Alaq 96:1-5.

Clear speech is also an influential force capable of captivating hearts. Allah chosen the unmatched eloquence of the Arabic tongue for His final revelation Ash-Shu'ara 26:192-195, Al-Ahqaf 46:12, easing its recitation and comprehension upon the tongue of the Prophet Maryam 19:97, Ad-Dukhan 44:58. Because every messenger was sent in the language of their community Ibrahim 14:4, the tongue remains the foremost instrument for teaching, calling to truth, and conveying revelation.

The tongue as a tool and a characteristic

From the paper: «اللسان أداة وخاصية»

The Quran examines the tongue across its moral and expressive polarities, contrasting truthfulness with falsehood, and fluency with speech impediments. Falsehood reaches its most dangerous manifestation when people invent religious rulings, proclaiming things lawful or unlawful without divine authority An-Nahl 16:116, An-Nahl 16:62. The Quran vividly describes their tongues as personifying lies Yusuf 12:18, daring to fabricate falsehood against Allah for worldly status or tribal bias Al-An'am 6:139, Yunus 10:59. Such presumption brings severe spiritual darkness in the Hereafter Az-Zumar 39:60.

Conversely, upright truthfulness stands as the tongue's solitary saving virtue, warding off over twenty moral vices. This beauty is captured in the Quranic term "a tongue of truth" (lisan sidq), which Prophet Ibrahim begged of his Lord Ash-Shu'ara 26:84, Maryam 19:50. It denotes widespread, truthful praise and an enduring, honorable legacy across future generations, a reward granted to him across religious communities Al-Baqarah 2:124, Sad 38:46.

Human tongues also differ in fluency and hesitation. Prophet Musa acknowledged that his brother Harun was more eloquent than him Al-Qasas 28:34, asking Allah to loosen the impediment on his own tongue so Pharaoh and his people would grasp his speech Ta-Ha 20:27, Ash-Shu'ara 26:13, Ta-Ha 20:36. An impediment is not inherently sinful; when speechlessness stems from reverence and fear of speaking without divine knowledge, it reflects genuine faith.

In contrast, Zakariyya experienced temporary inability to speak to people as a miraculous sign Maryam 19:10, while his tongue remained fully capable of reciting scripture and glorifying Allah Ali 'Imran 3:41. The true, blameworthy muteness is that of the heart and mind, when people are deliberately deaf and blind to divine guidance Al-Baqarah 2:18.

«وقد قيل: إن في اللسان أكثر من عشرين آفة، وخصلة واحدة نافعة، وهي الصدق، وبها ينتفي عن الإنسان جميع الخصال الذميمة، وعن بدنه جميع الأفعال القبيحة، فإذا حجبه بالصدق فقد كملت له التقوى ونال المرتبة القصوى.»

Afflictions of the tongue

From the paper: «آفات اللسان»

The Quran warns against severe sins originating from the tongue:

  • Slander and foul speech: Hostile enemies stretch their hands and tongues with malicious intent Al-Mumtahanah 60:2. Allah despises public proclamation of evil speech unless one has been directly wronged An-Nisa 4:148, Ash-Shura 42:40, commanding believers to speak only what is best Al-Baqarah 2:83, Al-Isra 17:53, An-Nahl 16:125. Unrestrained words allow Satan to sow discord, and reckless speech remains the primary cause of people falling into the Fire.

The tongue as proof of Allah's power and greatness

From the paper: «دلالة اللسان على قدرة الله وعظمته»

The diversity of human languages and vocal tones is a miraculous sign of Allah's creative power Ar-Rum 30:22. Despite descending from a single ancestor, humans speak thousands of languages and dialects with completely unique vocal pitches, mirroring how identical soil and water produce fruits of diverse flavors and colors Ar-Ra'd 13:4, Fatir 35:28.

Anatomically, the tongue is an agile muscular organ anchored by seventeen muscles. Formed of flexible flesh without bones or cartilage, it moves swiftly in six directions without growing fatigued, shielded securely behind two gates: the teeth and lips. It serves vital physiological tasks including mastication, swallowing, dental hygiene, and acute taste perception through thousands of specialized papillae.

Remarkably, Allah positioned four distinct fluids within the head: salty water in the eyes to preserve the fat tissue, bitter wax in the ears to repel insects, mucus in the nose to filter dust, and sweet saliva in the mouth to soften food and aid digestion. Moreover, while vital beneficial limbs are paired, the harmful organs like the tongue are created singular, emphasizing restraint Al-Ahzab 33:4.

Medically, the tongue's color, coating, and texture serve as a sensitive barometer for internal ailments, from digestive disorders to systemic illnesses. Spiritually, its servitude includes the testimony of faith Al-Fath 48:26, compulsory Quranic recitation, and prescribed prayer glorifications. On the Day of Judgment, when mouths are sealed, the tongues, hands, and feet will testify against their owners, recounting every word and action by the command of the One who causes all things to speak An-Nur 24:24, Ya-Sin 36:65, Fussilat 41:21.

«والمقصود أن كل جارحة تشهد عليهم بما عملته، ينطقها الذي أنطق كل شيء، فلا يمكنه الإنكار، ولقد عدل في العباد من جعل شهودهم من أنفسهم.»

Takeaways

  1. Weigh every word before it leaves your lips

Because the tongue moves without physical fatigue, words can easily slip out unchecked. A believer must maintain constant vigilance over this vulnerable gateway, remembering that Satan actively exploits hasty, careless comments to incite hatred and fracture relationships.

  2. Harmonize your speech with inner conviction

The hallmark of hypocrisy is speaking pious or accommodating phrases that flatly contradict what is held in the heart. True spiritual integrity demands that your verbal expressions remain an honest and upright reflection of your conscience.

  3. Never pronounce religious rulings without knowledge

Declaring matters lawful or unlawful purely on personal taste or presumption is among the gravest sins of the tongue. One should exercise immense caution and humble restraint, adhering strictly to authenticated divine revelation.

  4. Use your speech to build and heal

Allah commands believers to always choose the best and gentlest phrasing in communication. Kind speech soothes wounded hearts, dissipates anger, and closes the door to demonic discord in families and communities.

  5. Remember the limb's ultimate testimony

The very tongue used to converse freely in this world will speak independently on the Day of Resurrection, recounting every statement it made before the Creator. This reality should inspire daily self-examination and sincere repentance.

Reflect

  • When you review your conversations from the past week, did your tongue build trust and peace, or did it spark unnecessary tension?
  • Are there times when you catch yourself offering polite words with your tongue while harboring entirely different feelings in your heart?
  • How often do you make casual claims about what is right or wrong in Islam without verifying authentic religious guidance?
  • In moments of anger or disagreement, what practical step can you take to seal your lips before harmful words escape?

Linguistic meaning

Linguistically, the root l-s-n denotes a fine, elongated shape in an organ or other entity. It is applied directly to the physical limb of speech, metaphorically to an articulated word, and idiomatically to a language or a community's spokesperson.

Technical meaning

Technically, as defined by al-Jurjani, the tongue is the bodily instrument and its expressive capacity, distinguished by a unique vocal tone that hearing identifies, just as sight distinguishes its physical form. Al-Razi noted it is the instrument for conveying knowledge, making it the most noble of faculties when rightly used.

How it differs from related terms

النطق Articulation (Al-Nutq)
Al-nutq is the specific uttering of letters and sounds that communicate intelligible meanings, a capacity unique to human beings. The tongue is more comprehensive than al-nutq because it is the broader physical organ responsible for speech as well as tasting and swallowing.
القول Statement (Al-Qawl)
Al-qawl refers to an individual compound word or concept conveyed during speech or formulated internally within the mind. The tongue is the physical vessel through which such statements are voiced into audible expression.
الكلام Structured Speech (Al-Kalam)
Al-kalam consists of two or more words linked by predication to deliver a complete, beneficial meaning. While al-kalam is broader in syntax than al-qawl, the physical tongue remains broader than all verbal concepts because it performs multiple non-verbal physiological roles.
الرأس The Head (Al-Ra's)
Al-ra's designates the summit of the physical creation where the primary senses congregate. The tongue is not identical to the head, but is an integral, highly specialized member located within its cavity.
