Meaning & Reflection
'He created man.' al-Saadi notes he was made in the finest form, perfected in limb and faculty — and Ibn Ashur observes the whole opening is cast as a *listing* of favours, counting them out one by one. Only after naming the gift of guidance does the Merciful name the gift of your very existence. Ask yourself: I take my own being utterly for granted — it is simply the backdrop against which everything else happens. This verse presents my existence as an item on a list of mercies, deliberately given. Before I owned anything or achieved anything, I *was* — and that was already a gift I did nothing to earn. When did I last thank Him simply for the fact that I exist at all?
