At a glance

Glorification, or tasbīḥ, is the reverent declaration that Allah is completely free from every defect, partner, child, or limitation. Rooted in the Arabic concept of placing distance between Allah and anything unworthy of His Majesty, it represents both the inner conviction of the heart and the spoken adoration of the tongue. Far from being a passive phrase, it is an active acknowledgment of His supreme transcendence.

Throughout the Quran, tasbīḥ is revealed as the universal heartbeat of existence. From the archangels encircling the Throne and the noble prophets enduring trials, to the mountains, birds, and inanimate creations, all beings unceasingly glorify their Maker. When you engage in tasbīḥ, you harmonize your voice with the entire cosmos in profound submission to the One True God.

Allah's glorification of Himself

From the paper: «

Across the Quran, Allah frequently declares His own absolute transcendence, using explicit terms of tasbīḥ twenty-seven times. In these passages, Allah exonerates Himself from three primary falsehoods: taking offspring, having partners, and suffering any weakness or deficiency.

First, Allah refutes the pagan and theological claims of having children Al-Baqarah 2:116, An-Nisa 4:171, Yunus 10:68. He clarifies that being the sole Owner and Creator of everything in existence makes taking a child logically impossible Maryam 19:35, Az-Zumar 39:4. A child would denote need, whereas Allah is completely self-sufficient. He also repudiates the pagan attribution of daughters or supposed lineage with the unseen world An-Nahl 16:57, As-Saffat 37:158-159, Az-Zukhruf 43:81-82.

Second, Allah purifies Himself from having any partner in creation, dominion, or judgment Al-An'am 6:100, Al-Qasas 28:68, Ar-Rum 30:40. The Quran presents decisive rational proofs: were there rival gods, each would have taken away its creation and competed for supremacy, ruining the cosmos Al-Isra 17:42-43, Al-Anbiya 21:22, Al-Mu'minun 23:91.

Third, Allah glorifies Himself by manifesting His supreme power and sublime majesty. He opens extraordinary events, such as the miraculous Night Journey of the Prophet Muhammad, with tasbīḥ Al-Isra 17:1. He highlights His majesty when speaking to Moses An-Naml 27:7-8, the orderly cycles of day and night Ar-Rum 30:17-18, the intricate design of pairs across creation Ya-Sin 36:36, and His effortless command of bringing all things into existence Ya-Sin 36:82-83. He exalts Himself above all idols, reminding humanity that the entire earth and the folded heavens will rest in His Hand on the Day of Resurrection Az-Zumar 39:67, Al-Hashr 59:23.

Glorification by the angels

From the paper: «

The noble angels are honored servants who never show arrogance toward worshipping Allah, nor do they tire Al-A'raf 7:206, An-Nisa 4:136. In ten distinct Quranic contexts, Allah highlights their devotion, revealing several profound realities about their nature.

The essential role of the angels is worship, tasbīḥ, and sanctification Al-Anbiya 21:19. They declared this duty from the beginning of human history, affirming to their Lord that they celebrate His praise and sanctify His name Al-Baqarah 2:30. Moreover, out of exquisite courtesy and reverence, angels begin their speech to Allah with tasbīḥ before uttering any request or reply. When questioned about the names taught to Adam, they opened by glorifying Him Al-Baqarah 2:31-32. On the Day of Judgment, when asked if idolaters worshipped them, they will immediately begin their defense with tasbīḥ to affirm their absolute innocence and servitude Saba 34:40-41.

Their glorification is constant and unceasing, continuing night and day without slackening or exhaustion Al-Anbiya 21:19-20, Fussilat 41:38. Among them, the majestic bearers of the Throne and those surrounding it are specially noted for exalting Allah with praise, bearing faith, and seeking forgiveness for the believers Az-Zumar 39:75, Ghafir 40:7. The angels openly honor their station through this devotion As-Saffat 37:165-166, motivated not by routine habit, but by profound awe and reverence of Allah's splendor Ar-Ra'd 13:13. When a believer learns of the angels' constant adoration, it serves as an inspiring invitation to follow their example day and night.

Glorification by the prophets

From the paper: «

The prophets are the elite of humanity, chosen to convey divine guidance, and their lives exemplify the highest forms of tasbīḥ.

  • Yunus (Jonah): Deep within the belly of the whale, Yunus called upon Allah, exalting Him and admitting his personal shortcoming Al-Anbiya 21:87. The Quran affirms that had he not been among those who glorify Allah, he would have remained trapped until the Day of Resurrection As-Saffat 37:139-144. His sincere tasbīḥ became the direct cause of his deliverance, offering timeless hope to every distressed believer Al-Anbiya 21:88.
  • Musa (Moses): When Musa asked to see his Lord and the mountain crumbled upon divine manifestation, Musa fell unconscious. Upon reviving, his immediate utterance was tasbīḥ and repentance Al-A'raf 7:143. Later, Musa asked Allah to appoint his brother Harun as his partner specifically so they could glorify Him abundantly Ta-Ha 20:29-35.
  • Dawud (David): Endowed with an extraordinary, beautiful voice, Dawud's praise was joined by the towering mountains and flocks of birds, all echoing his glorification at morning and dusk Al-Anbiya 21:79, Saba 34:10, Sad 38:17-19.
  • Zakariyya (Zechariah): Given the sign of temporary silence when promised a son, Zakariyya was instructed to glorify Allah morning and evening, and he signaled to his people to do the same Ali 'Imran 3:41, Maryam 19:10-11.
  • Isa (Jesus): On the Day of Judgment, when asked if he told people to take him and his mother as deities, Isa will begin his response with tasbīḥ, exalting Allah before exonerating himself Al-Ma'idah 5:116.
  • Muhammad: The Prophet was commanded repeatedly in early revelation to glorify Allah during morning, evening, and night Ta-Ha 20:130, Ghafir 40:55, Qaf 50:39-40. Tasbīḥ was paired with patience At-Tur 52:48-49, reliance upon the Ever-Living Al-Furqan 25:58, and gratitude for victory An-Nasr 110:1-3.
«لقد أخبر الله عز وجل أن عبده ونبيه يونس عليه السلام بادر -وهو في تلك الظلمات- إلى مناداة ربه عز وجل، وتسبيحه وتوحيده، واعترف بظلمه لنفسه.»

Glorification by the believers

From the paper: «

The Quran praises sincere believers who maintain continuous tasbīḥ. People of understanding reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth, recognizing purpose in design and crying out in glorification Ali 'Imran 3:190-191. Sincere scholars of previous scriptures fall prostrate in weeping and glorify their Lord upon hearing the Quran Al-Isra 17:107-108. True believers fill the mosques at dawn and dusk, never distracted by trade or commerce from remembering Allah An-Nur 24:36-38, and fall down prostrating and glorifying without arrogance whenever reminded of divine signs As-Sajdah 32:15-17.

Believers are directly commanded to remember Allah abundantly and glorify Him morning and late afternoon Al-Ahzab 33:41-42, Al-Fath 48:8-9. The Quran also specifies particular situations for tasbīḥ. When hearing slander against the innocent, believers should immediately glorify Allah in shock and reject the lie An-Nur 24:16. When mounting a conveyance or animal, they are taught to praise Him for placing such travel within their control Az-Zukhruf 43:12-13.

Ultimately, tasbīḥ remains with believers into eternity. In the gardens of Paradise, where earthly obligations fall away, the believers' very prayer and joy begins with declaring Allah's glory and ends with universal praise Yunus 10:9-10.

Glorification of Allah by all creation

From the paper: «

The Quran makes it clear that the entire created universe glorifies Allah. In eleven passages across ten surahs, this devotion is ascribed to all entities, both broadly and specifically.

Every single element within the seven heavens and the earth glorifies Him with praise, though human beings do not comprehend the nature of their language Al-Isra 17:44. The birds spreading their wings and all beings know their distinct prayer and praise An-Nur 24:41. Several surahs open by proclaiming this universal reality, using past-tense verbs to establish that creation has perpetually glorified Him Al-Hadid 57:1, Al-Hashr 59:1, As-Saff 61:1, and present-tense verbs to emphasize renewal and continuity Al-Jumu'ah 62:1, At-Taghabun 64:1, culminating in the final verses of Surah al-Hashr Al-Hashr 59:24.

Certain creations are singled out: the thunder glorifies Allah with praise out of fear Ar-Ra'd 13:13, and the mountains and gathering birds echoed the glorification of Dawud Al-Anbiya 21:79, Sad 38:17-19.

Furthermore, created beings that were wrongly taken as gods by misguided humans will glorify Allah and completely disown their worshippers on the Day of Judgment. Isa will repudiate false claims of divinity Al-Ma'idah 5:116-117, and the angels will declare Allah's transcendence, proclaiming their own helplessness and servitude before Him Al-Furqan 25:17-18, Saba 34:40-41.

«بل كل كائن في هذا الوجود يسبح بحمد الله عز وجل، وهذا التصريح يحمل كل إنسان عاقل على طاعة الله، وإخلاص العبادة له، ومداومة ذكره؛ حتى لا يكون -وهو الذي كرمه ربه وفضله- أقل من غيره طاعة لله تعالى».»

Forms of glorification

From the paper: «

The Quran uses several distinct phrasing structures to convey tasbīḥ, each matching a specific theological context:

«وهذا التسبيح المقرون بالحمد يتضمن التعظيم لله تعالى على الإجمال والكمال؛ وذلك لأن التسبيح مع التحميد يجمع النفي والإثبات: نفي المعايب كلها عنه سبحانه، وإثبات المحامد كلها له سبحانه.»

Occasions for glorification

From the paper: «

While tasbīḥ is commendable at all times, the Quran highlights specific occasions when declaring Allah's glory is uniquely emphasized.

«وفي هذه الآية: دليل على أن العبد المؤمن يسبح الله تعالى عند حدوث ما ينافي تنزيهه وتعظيمه سبحانه؛ من قول أو فعل أو اعتقاد».

Times for glorification

From the paper: «

The Quran establishes specific times for tasbīḥ, effectively wrapping the believer's entire day in remembrance. These periods include morning and evening (al-ʿashī wa-l-ibkār and bukratan wa-aṣīlā), before sunrise and sunset, the hours of the night, and following prostrations Ali 'Imran 3:41, Maryam 19:11, Ghafir 40:55, Sad 38:18-19, Al-Ahzab 33:41-42, Al-Fath 48:8-9, An-Nur 24:36-37, Ta-Ha 20:130, Qaf 50:39-40, At-Tur 52:48-49, Al-Insan 76:25-26, Ar-Rum 30:17-18. Scholars explain that these shifts in daylight and darkness manifest Allah's majesty, and several passages encompass the five daily prayers, morning and evening devotions, and late-night vigils.

The paper outlines abundant spiritual fruits for those who maintain this practice:

  • A Most Noble Worship: Emulating the unceasing devotion of the angels and the universal choir of all creation Al-Isra 17:44, Al-Fath 48:8-9.
  • Attaining Divine Praise: Earning the honored status of sincere servants whom Allah praises in His scripture An-Nur 24:36-38, As-Sajdah 32:15.
  • Support for Patience and Relief from Anguish: Calming constriction of the chest and helping the soul endure harsh words and difficulties Ta-Ha 20:130, Al-Hijr 15:97-98, As-Saffat 37:143-144.
  • The Supreme Expression of Gratitude: Acknowledging Allah's endless gifts and generosity Az-Zukhruf 43:13.
  • Forgiveness of Sins: Serving as a primary means for expiating faults and cleansing the soul.
  • The Ideal Preparation to Meet Allah: Chosen as the concluding devotion for the Prophet's earthly mission An-Nasr 110:1-3.
«ولعل الحكمة من تخصيص تلك الأوقات للتسبيح هي أن تعاقب هذه الأوقات وتتابعها، وما يحدث فيها من أمور مختلفة عجيبة دالة على قدرة الله عز وجل وعظمته، وذلك موجب لتسبيحه عز وجل وتنزيهه عن النقائص والعيوب.»

Takeaways

  1. Turn to Tasbih in Difficulties

When you face severe hardship, follow the example of Yunus by pairing the affirmation of Allah's perfection with an honest admission of your own shortcomings Al-Anbiya 21:87-88.

  2. Anchor Your Day Around Transitions

Establish consistent routines of glorification at dawn, dusk, and throughout the day Ta-Ha 20:130, transforming ordinary shifts in time into moments of spiritual renewal.

  3. Counter Slander with Exaltation

When confronted with malicious gossip or shocking rumors, guard your speech and declare Allah's glory An-Nur 24:16, exonerating innocent people and seeking divine protection.

  4. Acknowledge Daily Blessings on the Move

Whenever stepping into a car, bus, plane, or other transport, recite the Quranic tasbīḥ Az-Zukhruf 43:13 to recall that the ability to travel safely is an unearned gift from Allah.

  5. Respond to Success with Humility

Whenever you attain victory, promotion, or relief, protect your heart from arrogance by joining glorification with praise and seeking forgiveness An-Nasr 110:1-3.

Reflect

  • When you experience distress or worry, what words do you reflexively utter, and how can you integrate the prayer of Yunus into those moments?
  • How mindful are you of the transitions of morning and evening, and could you dedicate a few quiet minutes during those times purely to tasbih?
  • In what areas of your daily routine do you benefit from conveniences without consciously recognizing Allah's role in making them accessible to you?

Linguistic meaning

Derived from the root (s-b-ḥ), which conveys two core ideas: an act of worship signifying the purification and exoneration of Allah from all evil, and a type of swift movement or floating, as in swimming.

How it differs from related terms

Sanctification
While both terms share the sense of keeping Allah far removed from evil, taqdīs is broader in application: every sanctified entity is glorified, but not the reverse. Tasbīḥ is strictly exclusive to Allah and cannot be applied to creation, whereas taqdīs can describe human beings or places (such as a holy land). Additionally, some scholars note that tasbīḥ emphasizes negating defects through word and deed, while taqdīs focuses on affirming attributes of absolute perfection in belief.
