At a glance
The Quran severely condemns fabrication, which is the deliberate invention of baseless falsehoods against another party. While an ordinary lie might be uttered to protect oneself or flatter others, fabrication specifically involves inventing lies against others without their consent, and its gravest form is attributing false doctrines, partners, or laws to Allah. It strikes at the heart of faith by turning truth into falsehood and falsehood into truth.
Throughout sacred history, deniers relied on fabrication to resist divine messengers. They accused noble prophets of magic, dismissed divine revelation as human poetry or ancient legends, and invented religious taboos without divine authority. The Quran exposes these fabrications as sheer stubbornness and ignorance, reminding believers that truth is self-evident and resilient against human distortions.
Understanding fabrication helps you guard your heart against corrupt innovations and reckless speech. By submitting wholly to divine revelation and refusing to speak about sacred matters without knowledge, you preserve communal trust, safeguard your faith, and protect yourself from the disgrace that fabricators face in both worlds.
Key verses
- Al-A'raf 7:152: This verse reveals that whoever invents lies against Allah will inevitably be seized by divine wrath and humiliation in this worldly life.
- Ta-Ha 20:61: Musa warned the magicians that fabricating lies against Allah brings utter failure and eradicates the wrongdoer through divine punishment.
- Al-An'am 6:140: This verse demonstrates that inventing prohibitions regarding lawful sustenance is sheer loss, folly, and astray fabrication against Allah.
- Hud 11:13: Allah challenged deniers who claimed the Prophet invented the Quran to produce ten fabricated surahs of equal eloquence if their claim was true.

Fabrication in religious beliefs
From the paper: «أولًا: الافتراء في العقائد»
The gravest form of fabrication targets core beliefs: the divine nature, prophethood, and divine scriptures. When idolaters claimed partners for Allah, they invented an enormous sin An-Nisa 4:48. Similarly, claiming self-righteous salvation without proof is a blatant lie against Allah An-Nisa 4:49-50, just as the ancient tribes fabricated names for false idols Hud 11:50. When messengers called people to pure worship, stubborn leaders threatened them with expulsion rather than abandoning their invented deities Al-A'raf 7:88-89, Al-Qasas 28:83.
Fabricators also attacked the prophets and their signs. Pharaoh dismissed Musa's clear signs as invented sorcery merely because his ancestors had not witnessed them Al-Qasas 28:36. The people of Maryam accused her of an invented atrocity Maryam 19:28, An-Nisa 4:156, Al-Mumtahanah 60:12. When Allah replaced a temporary ruling with a better one through divine wisdom Al-Baqarah 2:106, critics accused the Prophet of inventing scripture An-Nahl 16:101-102. Yet Allah preserved His messenger against every pressure to compromise the revelation Al-Isra 17:73.
Opponents also attacked the Quran itself, calling it clear magic Saba 34:43, confused dreams, poetry Al-Anbiya 21:5, an invented lie assisted by others Al-Furqan 25:4, or ancient legends Saba 34:43. The Quran refutes these contradictory excuses. It is impossible for human beings to invent this revelation Yunus 10:37, which confirms earlier scriptures, clarifies every matter, and offers guidance to believers Yusuf 12:111. Had the Prophet invented anything, Allah would have sealed his heart Ash-Shura 42:24. Even modern attempts to distort the Quran as mere literature or invent false scriptures are doomed to vanish before divine truth Al-Hijr 15:9, Al-Qamar 54:17, Al-Anbiya 21:18, Ar-Ra'd 13:17, because no one is more unjust than one who invents lies against Allah Yunus 10:17, Al-An'am 6:21.

Fabrication in religious laws
From the paper: «ثانيًا: الافتراء في الشرائع»
Another dangerous arena of fabrication is the illegitimate regulation of what is lawful and unlawful. Declaring things permissible or forbidden belongs exclusively to Allah; no creature has the right to declare lawful provisions forbidden as a matter of religious devotion without divine sanction Yunus 10:59, Al-An'am 6:150.
The Quran severely warns against recklessly uttering declarations of halāl and harām based on personal desires or baseless customs, for doing so is the essence of fabricating lies against Allah An-Nahl 16:116. This applies to every religious innovation unsupported by revelation, as well as every human legislation that overrides divine law. The pagan Arabs fell into this grave folly by dividing livestock into complex, baseless categories: dedicating some strictly to idols without mentioning Allah's name, permitting certain unborn calves only to men while forbidding them to women unless born dead, and slaughtering their own children Al-An'am 6:138-139, Al-An'am 6:140.
They invented sacred categories for camels and cattle: cutting an animal's ears to sanctify it, releasing livestock for false gods, or forbidding their use for transport and labor. The Quran exposes that Allah never sanctioned any of these practices; rather, the deniers invented them out of ignorance and lack of reason Al-Ma'idah 5:103. Those who initiate such corrupt practices incur profound guilt, just as the paper notes regarding the early innovator who first altered prophetic monotheism and introduced such superstitious taboos.

Condemning fabricators and refuting them
From the paper: «ذم المفترين والرد عليهم»
The Quran employs diverse methods to rebuke fabricators and demolish their false claims:
- Calling them the most unjust: No one exceeds the injustice of someone who invents lies against Allah or denies His revelations Al-A'raf 7:37. They deny Allah His supreme right, assign divinity to powerless beings, and falsely accuse the Prophet despite knowing his lifelong honesty.
- Challenging them to produce the like: The Quran issued a progressive challenge. It first challenged all humans and jinn to produce the whole Quran Al-Isra 17:88. It then reduced the challenge to ten fabricated surahs matching its eloquence Hud 11:13, and finally to a single surah Yunus 10:38, Al-Baqarah 2:23-24. Despite their unmatched mastery of the Arabic language, they remained completely helpless.
- Exposing their contradictions: The Quran used probing questions to expose the illogical nature of their dietary taboos regarding sheep, goats, camels, and cattle Al-An'am 6:143-144. If Allah had forbidden the males, every male would be unlawful; if the females, every female would be unlawful; and if whatever the womb contained, all offspring would be forbidden. Their arbitrary rules collapsed under basic rational scrutiny.
- Conceding the argument for debate: The Quran instructed the Prophet to tell critics that if he had invented the message, its guilt would fall solely upon him, and none could shield him from Allah's immediate wrath Hud 11:13, Hud 11:35, Al-Ahqaf 46:8, Al-Jinn 72:22-23. This gracious concession exposes the sincerity of the Prophet.
- Warning them of severe retribution: Allah swore by Himself that fabricators will be cross-examined regarding their lies An-Nahl 16:56, and warned that their faces will turn black on the Day of Resurrection Yunus 10:60, Az-Zumar 39:60, while urging the Prophet to leave them to their fleeting plots Al-An'am 6:112.

Causes of fabrication
From the paper: «أسباب الافتراء»
Fabrication does not arise in a vacuum; the paper identifies three major root causes highlighted in the Quran:
First, disbelief. Those who fabricate lies are people who lack genuine faith in Allah's signs An-Nahl 16:105. A person who truly fears Allah and believes in divine accountability cannot deliberately invent falsehoods against Him. The Prophet, by contrast, was recognized across his entire community as the truthful and trustworthy one, long before receiving revelation.
Second, stubborn obstinacy. Deniers frequently resort to fabrication out of pure arrogance and malice. When confronted with undeniable truth, they attempt to dismiss the messenger by alleging madness or deliberate deception Saba 34:8. They exhaust their wealth and efforts to turn people away, not because the message lacks clarity, but because their arrogance refuses to submit to divine authority Yunus 10:101.
Third, ignorance. Lack of sound knowledge leads people to invent false devotions and superstitions. The pagan Arabs ignorantly set aside portions of their harvest and livestock for inanimate idols that could neither benefit nor harm them An-Nahl 16:56, Al-An'am 6:136. This same ignorance resurfaces in later eras when people dedicate offerings, vows, or animals to created beings instead of reserving all acts of worship solely for Allah.

Effects of fabrication
From the paper: «آثار الافتراء»
Fabrication leaves catastrophic marks on both the individual and society.
On the individual level, the fabricator is deemed the most criminal of wrongdoers Ali 'Imran 3:94, An-Nahl 16:105. Fabrication paves the way for idolatry and religious innovations, because abandoning revelation inevitably leads one toward baseless myths. It deprives the soul of divine guidance Al-An'am 6:144 and guarantees failure and loss Al-An'am 6:140, Yunus 10:69. Furthermore, it brings humiliation in this life Al-A'raf 7:152, invites worldly chastisement Ta-Ha 20:61, causes terrible agonies at the moment of death Al-An'am 6:93, incurs the curse and anger of Allah Hud 11:18, Al-A'raf 7:152, and guarantees a harsh interrogation on Judgment Day Al-Ankabut 29:13.
On the societal level, fabrication shatters communal stability. It spreads moral corruption, as people who disregard Allah indulge in various vices without fear. Gatherings where lies and slanders are voiced become breeding grounds for social discord. Fabrication also undermines an essential objective of Islamic law: preserving the ummah by maintaining trust and security. When accusations and invented rumors multiply, mutual suspicion rises, making it easy for the weak-hearted to slip into hypocrisy. Furthermore, false accusations exhaust righteous leaders, forcing them to spend valuable time defending their integrity rather than fulfilling their noble mission.

Consequences of fabrication
From the paper: «عاقبة الافتراء»
The Quran outlines terrifying consequences for fabricators across time:
In this worldly life, they face failure, disgrace, and exposed injustice. Musa warned the magicians that fabricating lies against Allah yields nothing but ruin Ta-Ha 20:61, and that single sincere statement destabilized the sorcerers' confidence and guided them to faith. Fabricators earn the label of true oppressors when they reject the truth out of stubbornness Ali 'Imran 3:93-94, Al-An'am 6:93. They are entirely barred from true success Yunus 10:68-70; any fleeting power or wealth they enjoy is merely temporary enjoyment before severe punishment. Moreover, divine wrath and humiliation cling to them, just as the calf-worshippers experienced Al-A'raf 7:152, Al-Baqarah 2:54. As early scholars noted, every innovator who invents falsehoods carries the badge of humiliation upon their shoulders.
In the hereafter, all their false supports vanish. The false deities and intermediaries they relied upon will abandon them, leaving them helpless and without intercession Yunus 10:28-30, Al-Ahqaf 46:28, An-Nahl 16:86-87. They will also endure public disgrace before all creation: angels, prophets, humans, and jinn will hear the witnesses proclaim Allah's curse upon those who lied against their Lord Al-Qasas 28:74-75, Al-A'raf 7:52-53, Hud 11:18. Finally, they will be cast into the blazing Fire as the inevitable recompense for their deliberate lies against Allah Yunus 10:59-60.

Takeaways
Never Speak on Religious Matters Without Knowledge
Declaring matters halāl or harām without clear evidence from the Quran and authentic Sunnah is a form of fabricating lies against Allah An-Nahl 16:116. Restrain your tongue from passing religious judgments based on personal assumptions or popular opinions.
Evaluate Claims Using Divine Revelation as the Benchmark
Do not abandon established religious texts in favor of mystical feelings, personal intuitions, or modern claims that treat the Quran as mere literature. True guidance is anchored firmly in revelation Yunus 10:37.
Avoid Spreading Baseless Accusations and Rumors
Inventing or circulating unverified claims against innocent individuals corrodes trust within the community and exhausts sincere workers. Protect your gatherings by rejecting slanders and maintaining communal integrity.
Dedicate All Devotional Acts Exclusively to Allah
Avoid any superstitious practices, oaths, or sacrificial dedications directed toward saints or created beings An-Nahl 16:56. Pure monotheism requires directing every act of devotion solely to your Creator.
Reflect
- Have you ever been quick to label something as forbidden or permissible without verifying what Allah and His messenger have said?
- When you hear rumors or unverified claims about someone in your community, do you verify the truth or help pass the story along?
- How can you strengthen your study of the Quran so you are not misled by modern attempts to distort its divine origin?
- What steps can you take to ensure your private devotional practices remain purely dedicated to Allah, free from innovative customs?

Technical meaning
The deliberate invention of baseless news that has no foundation whatsoever, representing the worst and most severe form of lying.

How it differs from related terms
- الكذب Ordinary lying
- Lying is broader than fabrication, covering any report that contradicts reality through speech, gesture, or silence. Fabrication is a narrower and far more repulsive subset: it involves inventing baseless claims specifically against another person without their consent, whereas ordinary lying can be about oneself or include flattery that the listener enjoys.
- الإفك Overturning the truth
- While both terms describe monstrous falsehoods that cause harm, ifk specifically involves taking an existing truth and inverting it into falsehood, whereas fabrication is inventing entirely fictitious news out of nothing.
- البهتان Confounding slander
- Fabrication refers to inventing an untrue report against another party, but when that invented lie is stated directly in the presence of the accused, or is so astonishingly atrocious that it stuns, confounds, and silences the listener, it becomes buhtan.
