At a glance
In our daily lives, competition often revolves around worldly achievements, wealth, and status. Yet the Quran calls believers to direct their competitive drive toward what truly matters: hastening to acts of obedience, securing Allah's divine pardon, and striving for everlasting gardens. This sacred pursuit, termed al-musābaqah, transforms personal ambition into pure devotion.
The Quran does not view faith as a passive state. It invites you to be among the foremost, those who seize every fleeting opportunity to do good before sickness, distraction, or old age intervene. By racing toward righteousness with reverence and humble hearts, believers follow the footsteps of the prophets and the early pioneers of faith.

Praiseworthy vying
From the paper: «
The Quran celebrates several arenas of praiseworthy racing. Foremost is outstripping others in general righteous deeds, commanding believers to vie with one another Al-Baqarah 2:148 and Al-Ma'idah 5:48. The scholars note that the command applies broadly to every act of obedience, urging Muslims to pray at the earliest times and seize opportunities for charity before life slips away. Believers are also described as eagerly advancing toward good Al-Mu'minun 23:61 and continually excelling by Allah's gracious leave Fatir 35:32.
Another lofty arena is racing toward Allah's boundless forgiveness and vast Paradise Al-Hadid 57:21. Unlike the call to hasten in Ali 'Imran 3:133, which addresses pious servants who have already attained advanced discipline, the call to race in Al-Hadid 57:21 motivates believers who are still contending with worldly distractions, reminding them that this ultimate achievement is purely Allah's gift.
Praiseworthy racing also includes being early in faith. Later generations are taught to honor and pray for those who preceded them in faith without harboring resentment Al-Hashr 59:10. It encompasses the noble angels who race to execute Allah's divine decrees and protect revelation An-Nazi'at 79:4, Al-Anbiya 21:27, and At-Tahrim 66:6. Above all, it crowns the foremost pioneers among the Emigrants and the Helpers At-Tawbah 9:100, as well as the supreme rank of believers who are brought near to Allah in the gardens of delight Al-Waqi'ah 56:10-12.
Lastly, the Quran reflects on the preceding decree of Allah, whose eternal word and judgment encompass all human destiny Hud 11:40, Hud 11:110, Ta-Ha 20:129, Al-Anbiya 21:101, As-Saffat 37:171, and Al-Qamar 54:49.

Blameworthy vying
From the paper: «
Just as the Quran honors those who pioneer goodness, it severely condemns those who lead the way into transgression and corruption. The primary example of blameworthy precedence is the people of Lot. Prophet Lot rebuked his people for initiating an unprecedented obscenity that no creature in the world had committed before them Al-A'raf 7:80 and Al-Ankabut 29:28-29.
Their action represented a ruinous historical first, driven by base animal lust rather than healthy human purpose Al-A'raf 7:81. Because they corrupted themselves and spread corruption to others, Prophet Lot prayed for help against them as agents of corruption Al-Ankabut 29:30, leading to their severe destruction Al-A'raf 7:28.
A second form of blameworthy precedence is the race into disbelief. Those who reject faith may imagine they have escaped Allah's grasp or outstripped His reckoning, but the Quran warns that they can never frustrate their Lord Al-Anfal 8:59. Similarly, the Prophet was comforted when grieved by the stubborn speed with which disbelievers and hypocrites plunged into disbelief and hostility Ali 'Imran 3:176, Al-Ma'idah 5:41, and Fatir 35:8. Their persistent haste in sin only seals their deprivation in the Hereafter.
«أولها: تعظيم جرم فعل قوم لوط، حيث إنه تعالى (خص بالذِّكْرِ من مرتكباتهم أقبحها مما استوجبوا به العذاب، وخاطبهم لوط عليه السلام:إن هؤلاء المكذبين من قبلكم على سوء مرتكباتهم لم يسبقوكم إلى ما أنتم عليه وقد سمعتم بهم وخلت من قبلكم المثلات) .»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Characteristics of those who vie in good
From the paper: «
Those who outstrip others in good are distinguished by seven profound spiritual qualities outlined in the Quran:
- Pure faith in Allah and His messengers: Faith is their bedrock, expressed through sincere speech, firm inner conviction, and devoted outward action Al-Hadid 57:21, Al-Anfal 8:2-4.
- Reverent awe (khashyah): This is a deep veneration born of knowing Allah's grandeur, reserved especially for the knowledgeable Al-Mu'minun 23:57, Fatir 35:28, and Al-Ahzab 33:39.
- Tender apprehension (ishfāq): Their hearts remain delicate and cautious, fearing Allah's punishment even while excelling in good Al-Mu'minun 23:57. As al-Hasan al-Basri noted, the believer combines excellent deeds with fear of shortcomings.
- Belief in Allah's signs: They constantly reflect upon the Quran and the natural world, renewing their certainty and gratitude Al-Mu'minun 23:58.
- Freedom from hidden polytheism: They guard their hearts against showing off, seeking solely Allah's pleasure Al-Mu'minun 23:59.
- Abundant righteous action: They continually fulfill all obligations and spend generously without artificial limits Al-Mu'minun 23:60.
- Trembling apprehension (wajal): Despite their prayers, fasting, and charity, their hearts tremble with fear that their deeds might not be accepted Al-Mu'minun 23:60. The Prophet confirmed that this verse refers not to sinners, but to devoted worshippers who fear falling short.
Al-Razi observed that this beautiful sequence starts with awe that prevents sin, establishes firm conviction and sincere intention, and concludes with humble fear of deficiency, the highest station of truthful believers.

Reward of those who vie in good
From the paper: «
Allah bestows immense gifts upon those who outstrip others in righteousness, beginning in this earthly life. In this world, they attain Allah's divine pleasure At-Tawbah 9:100, elevated honor above others Al-Waqi'ah 56:10-14, divine guidance toward righteous deeds Yunus 10:9, and genuine affection placed in the hearts of fellow believers Maryam 19:96. Their wealth and souls receive purity and spiritual growth At-Tawbah 9:103, Al-Mu'minun 23:60. They enjoy a contented, wholesome life An-Nahl 16:97, the opening of earthly and heavenly blessings Al-A'raf 7:96, and leadership in faith through setting a virtuous example Al-Furqan 25:74. The angels carrying the Throne constantly pray for their forgiveness Ghafir 40:7, Al-Furqan 25:16, and Allah promises them spiritual victory and stability An-Nur 24:55, Ghafir 40:51.
In the Hereafter, their reward is incomparably greater An-Nahl 16:30. They enjoy absolute divine satisfaction At-Tawbah 9:100. At the moment of death, they are greeted with comforting rest, fragrant breeze, and immediate relief Al-Waqi'ah 56:88-89. They enter multiple expansive gardens beneath which rivers flow At-Tawbah 9:100, an eternal home of permanent residency where neither weariness nor fatigue can touch them Fatir 35:32-33, Fatir 35:35.
Adorned in gold, pearls, and pure silk Fatir 35:33, their sorrow is permanently lifted Fatir 35:34. They recline comfortably facing one another upon woven thrones Al-Waqi'ah 56:15-16, served by immortal youths with pure flowing drinks that cause neither headache nor intoxication Al-Waqi'ah 56:17-19, chosen fruits, fine poultry, and purified companions Al-Waqi'ah 56:20-23. Best of all, their station is that of intimate proximity to their Lord Al-Waqi'ah 56:10-11, hearing only peace upon peace in an atmosphere free from empty chatter or accusation Al-Waqi'ah 56:25-26.
«وفائدة هذا الوصف: بيان تنعيم جسمهم، وكرامة نفسهم فهم مقربون عند الله، فهم في غاية اللذة وفي جنات، فجسمهم في غاية النعيم، بخلاف المقربين عند الملوك، فإنهم يلتذون بالقرب، لكن لا يكون لجسمهم راحة، بل يكونون في تعب من الوقوف وقضاء الأشغال، والله أعلم.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Takeaways
Perform Acts of Worship Without Procrastination
When an opportunity to do good arises, such as praying at the beginning of its prescribed time or giving charity, seize it immediately. Waiting invites sickness, forgetfulness, and distractions that can steal the reward.
Pair Sincere Effort with Humble Trepidation
Do not become arrogant or self-satisfied with your religious practice. Emulate the foremost believers who fulfill their duties while remaining anxious that their deeds might be flawed or unaccepted.
Honor the Predecessors in Faith
Cultivate love and respect for the early companions and righteous forebears who pioneered faith, praying for them and keeping your heart free of ill will or resentment toward other believers.
Avoid Being a Pioneer in Sin
Be cautious never to initiate or normalize a blameworthy deed. Leading others into disobedience or setting a corrupt precedent brings grave responsibility and divine condemnation.
Reflect
- What good deed have you been delaying, and what step can you take today to act on it without postponement?
- When you complete an act of worship, do you lean toward self-congratulation, or do you balance hope with humble awe?
- How clean is your heart toward believers who preceded you in faith or those who currently outpace you in devotion?

How it differs from related terms
- المسارعة rushing
- Musabaqah represents the initial stage of entering a race against an external peer, whereas musara'ah is a higher stage where the person doubles their speed, driven purely by internal purpose and fear of missing a narrow window of time.
- المنافسة rivalry
- Musabaqah is a broad term that covers any form of racing, whether in good or neutral matters, while munafasah is specifically focused on aspiring to noble heights, acquiring virtues, and striving to resemble the most honorable without causing harm.
- المبادرة initiative
- Musabaqah is driven by the presence of a competitor, whereas mubudarah is taking spontaneous action solely from self-motivation, backed by a sound inner moral compass that ensures boundaries are not transgressed.
- العجلة hastiness
- Musabaqah involves interaction between competitors and is predominantly praiseworthy, especially for the Hereafter, while 'ajalah is an individual act that seeks something prematurely before its proper time, driven by lust, and is mostly condemned in the Quran.
- التقدم precedence
- Musabaqah requires mutual competition and effort to win, whereas taqaddum simply denotes being ahead in time, place, honor, or manufacturing sequence, and can occur in both good and evil without any mutual contest.
