'And fair companions with lovely eyes.' al-Saadi and Ibn Ashur note 'hur 'in' — pure, radiant companions, part of the reward of nearness. The Gardens are not solitary bliss; they include perfected companionship. Ask yourself: even the highest station — nearness to God — is not pictured as lonely. The Qur'an keeps affirming that the human need for companionship is not a weakness to be transcended but a good to be perfected and fulfilled. My longing to be known, accompanied, cherished is not a distraction from faith; it points to a completeness God intends to grant. Do I treat my need for love and companionship as a flaw to suppress, or as a true longing that, rightly directed, is met and honoured in what He has prepared?
