At a glance
From the very beginning of human history, Satan has stood as our sworn and persistent enemy. Created from scorchingly hot fire and hidden from human sight, he refused Allah's command to honor Adam out of arrogance and envy. Cast down from his exalted station, he pledged to spend every moment misleading humankind and dragging them toward destruction.
The Quran uncovers Satan's deceptive methods, showing that his power lies not in physical compulsion, but in whispers, false promises, and the gradual beautification of sin. He aims to make wrongdoing seem appealing, induce fear of poverty, stir up hatred between believers, and cause people to forget the remembrance of Allah.
Yet Allah has not left humanity defenseless. By clinging to the Quran, seeking immediate refuge in Allah, persevering in righteous company, and remaining vigilant against Satan's gradual steps, the believer can break his snares and find safety under divine protection.

The creation of Satan
From the paper: «
The Quran explains that Satan, referred to personally as Iblis, was created from scorching fire Al-Hijr 15:27 and possesses an unseen nature hidden from human sight Al-A'raf 7:27. Scholars note that while he worshipped among the angels, his underlying substance was fiery, belonging to the race of jinn Al-Kahf 18:50.
Allah did not create Satan in vain; profound divine wisdom underlies his existence. Ibn al-Qayyim highlighted that confronting Satan allows believers to fulfill the highest stations of devotion: striving against falsehood, seeking refuge in Allah, and recognizing that inner beauty and righteousness shine brightest in contrast with evil. His creation serves as an enduring trial to distinguish the sincere from the corrupt, and an open demonstration of Allah's forbearance.
Satan's rebellion began when Allah commanded the creation to prostrate before Adam Al-Baqarah 2:34. Driven by vanity, Iblis refused, claiming racial superiority because he was made of fire while Adam was made of clay Al-A'raf 7:12. For this arrogance, Allah cast him out in absolute humiliation Al-A'raf 7:13. Rather than repenting, he chose insolence and begged for respite until the Day of Resurrection, devoting his existence to misguiding Adam's descendants.
«والصواب التفصيل في هذه المسألة، فإبليس كان من الملائكة بصورته، وكان يعبد الله معهم، وليس منهم بمادته وأصله؛ فأصله من نار، وأصل الملائكة من نور، فمن اعتبره من الملائكة فعلى كونه كان في صحبتهم في العبادة، ومن اعتبره من الجن فعلى أصل خلقه.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Satan and the prophets
From the paper: «
The Quran documents Satan's encounters with the prophets, who stood as his ultimate rivals. In Paradise, Satan approached Adam and Eve repeatedly, whispering deceitful promises of eternal life and an everlasting kingdom Ta-Ha 20:120. He swore falsely by Allah that he was a sincere counselor Al-A'raf 7:21, causing them to stumble and leave Paradise Al-Baqarah 2:36.
With Prophet Yusuf, Satan sought to spark family ruin through envy, prompting Ya'qub to warn his young son of Satan's open enmity Yusuf 12:5. Later, Satan caused the released cupbearer to forget mentioning Yusuf to the king, prolonging Yusuf's unjust imprisonment Yusuf 12:42.
In the story of Ayyub, Satan intensified his suffering through relentless whispers to stir up despair and grief during his prolonged illness Sad 38:41, yet Ayyub turned wholly to Allah and found complete relief Sad 38:42-43. With Musa, Satan provoked an impulse of wrath during a scuffle, leading Musa to strike an Egyptian fatally, a hasty act Musa immediately attributed to Satan's instigation and sought forgiveness for Al-Qasas 28:15.
Even Prophet Muhammad faced Satan's open schemes. During the plotting of Quraysh in Dar al-Nadwah, Satan appeared in the guise of an elder to endorse the assassination plot Al-Anfal 8:30. Yet Allah continually protected His messengers, neutralizing Satan's interference and upholding the divine message Al-Hajj 22:52.
«فالشيطان هو الذي زين المعصية لآدم كما زينها لحواء، أي: أن الشيطان هو الذي قام بإغواء آدم وحواء، ولم تقم حواء بإغواء آدم على المعصية، فالغواية جاءت من الشيطان للاثنين معًا.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Volume 10
Satan's enmity toward humanity
From the paper: «
Satan's hostility toward mankind is ancient and unrelenting, rooted in his eviction from grace Al-Baqarah 2:36. Allah commands believers to treat him as a declared adversary whose sole objective is to drag his followers into the blazing fire Fatir 35:6. His enmity relies on specific, cunning strategies:
- Misleading by Degrees: He diverts humans from guidance to error An-Nisa 4:117-119. He first aims for outright disbelief and polytheism; failing that, he pushes for major sins, minor offenses, innovations, or distracting believers with lesser deeds at the expense of greater ones.
- Deceptive Hopes: He feeds the heart with illusions of long life, encouraging delay of repentance and endless worldly ambition An-Nisa 4:120.
- Beautifying Evil and Vilifying Good: He cloaks destructive sins in attractive wrappers while making virtuous obedience seem burdensome. He instills dread of poverty to prevent charity Al-Baqarah 2:268 and scares people away from speaking truth Ali 'Imran 3:175.
- Inducing Forgetfulness: He distracts people with worldly pursuits, causing them to neglect the remembrance of Allah Al-Mujadilah 58:19.
- Provocation and Inner Upheaval: He incites outbursts of rage and sows discord between brethren Al-A'raf 7:200, seeking to destabilize hearts and relationships.
«فالشيطان هو أكبر وأخطر عدو لبني آدم في هذه الحياة؛ لأنه منبع الشرور، والآثام، وهو القائد إلى الهلاك والخسران الدنيوي والأخروي، يدعو الناس إلى الكفر والشرك، وترك التوحيد، ويزين لهم البدع، ويسول لهم بالعصيان وترك أوامر الرحمن.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Means of protection from Satan
From the paper: «
Allah has provided clear remedies to guard the heart against Satan's assaults:
- Seeking Divine Refuge (Isti'adhah) and Supplication: Turning sincerely to Allah when negative thoughts or anger flare up removes Satan's influence Al-A'raf 7:200. Refuge is prescribed before reciting the Quran An-Nahl 16:98, during bouts of anger, and for safeguarding one's children Ali 'Imran 3:36.
- Countering His Weapons: Constant remembrance of Allah causes Satan to retreat. Rushing to genuine repentance immediately undoes the devil's gains Ali 'Imran 3:135. Maintaining righteous companions protects against isolation, whereas corrupt peers act as human devils who lead people to regret Al-Furqan 25:27-29.
- Following Quranic Guidance: The Quran is a light that dispels ignorance and confusion Al-Isra 17:9. Adhering to its guidance brings inner tranquility, whereas turning away produces a constricted, troubled life Ta-Ha 20:124-126.
- Refusing His Footsteps: Believers are commanded not to follow Satan's gradual traces An-Nur 24:21. His footsteps begin with a subtle thought, moving to curiosity, doubtful matters, and ultimately grave transgression, including consuming unlawful earnings Al-Baqarah 2:168, financial extravagance Al-Isra 17:27, and arguing about divine matters without sound knowledge Al-Hajj 22:3.

The fate of Satan in this world and the hereafter
From the paper: «
Satan's journey ends in utter disgrace. Because Iblis chose stubborn pride over submission, Allah singled him out for a unique earthly curse, casting him out of heavenly honor into perpetual debasement until the Day of Judgment Al-Hijr 15:34-35. Rather than ending on that Day, his punishment will intensify into everlasting torment.
Those who ally with him in this life reap humiliation, spiritual ruin, and a profound inner void An-Nisa 4:119. In the Hereafter, Satan's ultimate destination is Hell, and Allah has sworn to fill it with him and all who follow his whispers Al-A'raf 7:18. On that Day, the deceiver will publicly disown his followers, proclaiming that he possessed no real power over them except that he called them and they readily responded Ibrahim 14:22.
Both the devils and those who obeyed them will be cast into the Fire together Ash-Shu'ara 26:94-95. Overwhelmed by remorse when regret is of no avail, the transgressors will lament that their blind loyalty to Satan and his wicked companions led them to eternal perdition.

Takeaways
Acknowledge the Real Enemy
Satan is not an abstract concept or a passive onlooker; he is an active, sworn adversary whose entire focus is to separate you from Allah's pleasure.
Halt Sin at the First Step
Satan rarely demands outright disobedience immediately. He lures the soul through gradual curiosity and seemingly harmless compromises before springing his trap.
Make Seeking Refuge an Instinctive Reflex
Whenever anger rises, sinful desires awaken, or despair sets in, immediately utter a'udhu billahi min al-shaytanir-rajim with genuine conviction and mindful presence.
Undo Guilt with Immediate Repentance
When you stumble, do not allow Satan to drown you in hopeless guilt. Turning back to Allah swiftly with sincere repentance destroys his work.
Surround Yourself with Righteous Company
Solitude and corrupt companions make you vulnerable to doubts and sins. Staying rooted among sincere believers provides an essential spiritual fortress.
Reflect
- In what specific moments of your daily routine do you notice Satan whispering thoughts of anger, envy, or procrastination?
- Which gradual 'footstep' of Satan are you currently tolerating under the excuse that it is minor or harmless?
- When you make a mistake, does your heart rush toward Allah in repentance, or do you let Satan convince you that you are unworthy of forgiveness?
- How actively do you utilize the shield of Isti'adhah during moments of intense irritation or before reading the Quran?

How it differs from related terms
