At a glance
In the Quran, the word الفواحش al-fawahish (abominations) refers to sins whose extreme foulness and ugliness are glaringly evident to sound human nature. While commonly applied to unlawful sexual acts like fornication and sodomy, the Quranic usage encompasses any outward or inward transgression that reaches the height of indecency, including abusive speech, marital cruelty, and false attributions to Allah.
Islam does not merely condemn these acts after they happen; its comprehensive legal and moral guidance blocks the very pathways leading to them. By purifying the heart from vain desires, curbing the whisperings of Satan, prescribing modesty, and establishing communal vigilance, the Quran builds a protective sanctuary around the believer and the community.
Appreciating the legislative wisdom behind the prohibition of abominations reveals Allah's deep care for humanity. Every boundary protects essential human necessities: sound lineage, personal honor, psychological peace, and spiritual purity, ensuring that society does not sink into animalistic degradation.
Key verses
- An-Nur 24:2: Establishes the prescribed legal punishment for unlawful sexual relations, commanding that compassion not hinder the application of divine justice in public sight.
- Al-An'am 6:151: Issues a comprehensive prohibition against approaching any abomination, whether committed openly in public or harbored secretly within the heart.
- Al-A'raf 7:28: Rebuts the pagan excuse of blaming ancestral tradition and claiming divine command for their shameful rituals, declaring that Allah never commands indecency.
- An-Nisa 4:15: Shows the gradual legislative phasing of legal penalties for unlawful sexual intercourse, requiring four witnesses before later rulings were finalized.
- Al-Ankabut 29:28: Denounces the perverse practice initiated by the people of Lot, highlighting how it inverted sound human nature and disrupted basic societal safety.
- Al-Isra 17:32: Forbids even approaching fornication and adultery, characterizing the act as inherently vile and an evil, destructive path for society.
- An-Nur 24:31: Details essential preventative safeguards for women regarding modesty, covering adornment, and lowering the gaze to avoid inciting temptation.

Exonerating Allah from commanding abominations
From the paper: «
A foundational purpose of Islamic law is preserving social order and sustaining the righteousness of human intellect and conduct. Yet human beings naturally stumble. While the sincere believer repents and turns back to Allah, the misguided invent justifications for their shameful behavior, often projecting blame onto others or falsely attributing their sins to Allah.
When the pagans performed circumambulation around the sacred House entirely naked, they defended their vile practice by claiming they were only following their forefathers and that Allah had commanded it Al-A'raf 7:28. The Quran fiercely refutes this lie, asserting that Allah never commands shameful deeds or indecency. True worship requires dignity and modesty, as Allah has bestowed clothing to cover human nakedness and commanded taking adornment at every place of prayer An-Nahl 16:81, Al-A'raf 7:31.
Divine revelation explicitly forbids all abominations, whether done openly or in secret An-Nahl 16:90, Al-A'raf 7:33. Allah is pure and beautiful, accepting only what is good. Ascribing corrupt customs, ancestral misguidance, or shameless rituals to divine sanction is a grave falsehood that contradicts the very wisdom and holiness of the Creator.

Types of abominations
From the paper: «
Satan relentlessly exploits base instincts to plunge human beings into foul vices. The Quran broadly forbids approaching abominations in all forms, whether external actions or hidden designs of the heart Al-An'am 6:151:
- Unlawful Sexual Intercourse (zina): A grotesque crime that ruins lineages, tears down personal dignity, and spreads fatal diseases An-Nisa 4:15, Al-Isra 17:32. Its legal deterrents are sternly legislated to safeguard communal health An-Nur 24:2-3.
- Sodomy: The crime of Lot's people, which inverted natural instinct and ruined moral order An-Naml 27:54-55, Al-A'raf 7:80-81, Al-Ankabut 29:28-29. Scholars note that the Quran refers to it with the definite article as 'the abomination', highlighting that its foulness is universally recognized and even more destructive than ordinary fornication Hud 11:82-83.
- Abusive Speech and Spousal Defiance: The term also describes severe marital discord, obscenity towards in-laws, and public vulgarity, which strip homes of peace and strip women of maintenance rights during waiting periods At-Talaq 65:1, Al-Ahzab 33:30, An-Nisa 4:19.
- Incestuous Marriages: The Quran permanently abolished the pre-Islamic practice of inheriting or marrying the wives of one's father, calling it an abomination and hateful path An-Nisa 4:22. It strictly establishes seven categories of women forbidden by blood and seven forbidden by marriage and foster-relations An-Nisa 4:23-24.

Causes of committing abominations
From the paper: «
Individuals fall into abominations through distinct spiritual and psychological vulnerabilities:
- Disobeying Divine Commands: Willfully rebelling against what Allah commands or violating what He forbids invites ruin Al-Kahf 18:69, Al-Muzzammil 73:16. Ignoring mutual correction and remaining silent about public sin brings collective disgrace Al-Ma'idah 5:78-79.
- Following Satan's Footsteps: The devil rarely drives a person into great sins all at once; he operates incrementally through quiet whispers, gradual enticement, and rationalizing compromise An-Nur 24:21. He deceives people either by declaring lawful things forbidden or making unlawful earnings and appetites seem acceptable Al-Baqarah 2:168, Al-An'am 6:142, Al-Baqarah 2:208.
- Submitting to Base Desires: When personal lusts become the driving authority in one's life, they blind the intellect and overturn sound judgment An-Nazi'at 79:40, Al-Furqan 25:43. The Quran compares one who clings to earthly passions despite knowing the truth to a panting dog, hopelessly trapped in agitation Al-A'raf 7:176.
- Blind Conformity: Many are led astray by unthinking imitation of their corrupt peers or ancestors Al-Baqarah 2:170, Az-Zukhruf 43:22. Surrendering moral agency to tradition leaves people repeating the shameful habits of others without reflection.
- Approaching Tempting Pretexts: Lingering near the entryways of sin guarantees eventual falling into it. The Quran therefore forbids even drawing near to abominations, reminding us that physical senses like the eyes and tongue participate in corrupting the heart Al-An'am 6:151.

Prevention from falling into abominations
From the paper: «
Islam installs a multi-layered preventative framework to shield the believer and preserve communal purity:
- Spiritual Upbringing and Repentance: Imbuing the heart with reverence for Allah enables the believer to resist seduction, just as Prophet Yusuf resisted illicit advances by remembering his Lord Yusuf 12:23. Whenever a slip occurs, swift remorse and constant seeking of forgiveness neutralize Satan's despair Ali 'Imran 3:135.
- Guarding the Senses and Modesty: Men and women are commanded to lower their gaze and protect their chastity An-Nur 24:30-31. Women are instructed not to display private charms or draw provocative attention through jewelry, and describing another woman's physical features to one's husband is strictly forbidden An-Nur 24:31.
- Facilitating Marriage and Physical Boundaries: Marriage is encouraged as the primary fortress for sexual desire, while fasting serves as a shield for those unable to marry. Unrelated men and women must avoid physical touch, and individuals are barred from sharing a single blanket without barriers.
- Righteous Companionship and Worship: Good company acts like a seller of fine perfume, guiding a person toward virtue Al-Furqan 25:27-29, Az-Zukhruf 43:67-68. Devoting oneself to prayer naturally restrains foul speech and indecent behavior Al-Ankabut 29:45.
- Confronting Rumors and Enforcing Legal Penalties: Muslims must verify news before sharing and never spread rumors of scandalous misconduct Al-Hujurat 49:6, An-Nisa 4:83. Prescribed legal limits (hudud) firmly deter open crime and protect collective honor An-Nur 24:1-2.
«إن المنهج الإسلامي فيه وقاية من الفواحش والرذائل، وجعل للمحافظة على المجتمع الإسلامي؛ ليكون طاهرا نقيا عفيفا يتحلى بالفضائل منهجا وسلوكا وتعاملا، وليتخلى عن الرذائل في مناحي الحياة كافة.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Impact of the spread of abominations on society
From the paper: «
When abominations run unchecked, the spiritual, social, and moral foundations of an entire community collapse. Physical corruption and crises emerge across land and sea as a natural consequence of what human hands have earned, serving as a bitter foretaste so people may turn back to Allah in remorse Ar-Rum 30:41.
A society that tolerates or enjoys sensationalizing scandals faces profound divine wrath. The Quran issues a severe warning of painful torment in both worlds for those who love to see indecency publicized among believers An-Nur 24:19. Broadcasting stories of vice desensitizes the public, erodes sacred communal shame, and makes deviance appear commonplace and acceptable.
Islam commands concealing the personal sins of others rather than exposing them. The Prophet avoided naming individuals when rebuking wrongs in public, seeking reform without driving the sinner into deeper defiance. Likewise, boasting openly about one's private sins strips away divine protection. Unlawful sexual relations inevitably disrupt family lineages, dissolve protective marriages, invite debilitating physical and psychological diseases, and spread mutual bitterness across the community.
«الإسلام دين يحث على الفضيلة وينفر من الرذيلة، ولقد حرص الإسلام على محاربة العادات التي تتسم بالفواحش، لما تسببه من مفاسد، وتلحق أضرارا بالمجتمع، فانتشار الفواحش في أي مجتمع يعد تدميرًا له.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Legislative inimitability in prohibiting abominations
From the paper: «
The prohibitions of the Quran represent divine legislative wisdom designed to guide humanity toward what is most balanced and upright Al-Isra 17:9. Islam's approach to stamping out crime rests upon two complementary pillars: proactive prevention and definitive deterrence.
First, the law eliminates underlying pretexts long before an act occurs. By forbidding lustful gazes, seductive display, provocative touching, and even approaching fornication Al-Isra 17:32-33, the Shariah removes the spark before a fire erupts. It strictly condemns slandering chaste women to safeguard public reputations and maintain an atmosphere of mutual trust An-Nur 24:23. It also denounces unnatural practices like sodomy to preserve human lineage, support marital life, and prevent destructive contagions.
Second, once a crime transgresses public boundaries, the law prescribes clear, visible punishments like lashes for fornication An-Nur 24:2. When carried out openly, these penalties achieve true deterrence, preventing the offender from repeating the sin while making an unmistakable impression on observers. Combined with inner spiritual purification and community responsibility through commanding good and forbidding wrong Ali 'Imran 3:104, these divinely revealed laws safeguard human civilization from collapsing into chaos.

Takeaways
Block the Small Steps Toward Sin
Major moral failings rarely happen suddenly. Satan uses subtle, gradual steps: a casual careless glance, inappropriate jokes, or lingering near tempting environments. Protecting yourself requires cutting off these pathways at their very beginning An-Nur 24:21.
Never Normalize or Broadcast Vice
Publicizing, resharing, or laughing at scandals normalizes wickedness and damages the moral atmosphere of the community. Always seek to cover faults, maintain privacy, and avoid consuming content that trivializes indecency An-Nur 24:19.
Turn Regret into Immediate Action
If you stumble, never succumb to despair or justify your mistake. Follow your slip immediately with sincere repentance, humble prayer, and good deeds, trusting fully in the vast mercy and forgiveness of Allah Ali 'Imran 3:135, Al-Ankabut 29:45.
Reflect
- What everyday digital habits or entertainment choices might be functioning as quiet 'steps of Satan' in my daily life?
- How quickly do I react to protect my gaze and speech when entering environments where indecency is treated casually?
- When I hear negative talk or rumors about another person's moral conduct, is my first instinct to spread the news or to offer the cover of silence?

How it differs from related terms
Sin / Iniquity
- Every abomination is an iniquity (ithm), but ithm is broader, referring to any unlawful act that legally and naturally obligates one to refrain and makes the committer deserving of punishment in both worlds.
Offense / Transgression
- Used as a general synonym for sin, crime, and disobedience. It shares with an abomination the psychological reality of leaving the offender with deep shame, guilt, and alienation from Allah's pleasure.
Unlawful Intercourse
- A specific legal abomination defined as intercourse between a man and a woman without valid marriage or ownership. While every act of zina is an abomination, abominations also include verbal abuse, sodomy, and idolatry.
Disapproved / Reprehensible Deed
- A broader concept than an abomination. Munkar covers everything rejected by Islamic law and sound human nature, encompassing all vices, injustices, and base deeds, whereas fahishah refers specifically to the most excessively vile and indecent among them.
Major Sins
- All grave offenses for which sacred law threatens Hellfire, divine curse, or a worldly legal penalty. Abominations (al-fawahish) represent the most excessively monstrous subset among these major sins.
