At a glance

Throughout history, those who reject divine truth have rarely engaged with it in good faith. Instead, their first weapon has almost always been mockery: belittling the prophets, sneering at Allah's revealed signs, and ridiculing believers who seek to follow them sincerely. The Quran confronts this behavior with striking frequency, unmasking it not as intellectual critique or lighthearted wit, but as a symptom of deep spiritual corruption.

In the Quranic perspective, mockery springs from arrogance, ignorance, and stubborn disbelief. Unable to defeat truth with evidence, the mocker resorts to contempt to protect worldly prestige and suppress inner doubt. Yet the Quran reminds us that derision never derails the divine plan. While Allah may grant mockers temporary respite, their own mockery ultimately recoils upon them, turning their fleeting amusement into eternal humiliation.

Key verses

  1. Al-Baqarah 2:14-15: When the hypocrites privately boast to their leaders that they only pretend to believe in order to mock the faithful, Allah answers that He mocks them in return, leaving them to wander blindly in their transgression.
  2. At-Tawbah 9:64: The hypocrites live in constant dread that a surah will descend laying bare the contempt hiding inside their hearts, proving that mockers are plagued by deep inner paranoia.
  3. Al-Baqarah 2:67: When Musa commands his people to sacrifice a cow, they falsely accuse him of mocking them; his immediate response is to seek refuge in Allah from acting like the ignorant.
  4. An-Nisa 4:140: Believers are strictly commanded not to sit in gatherings where Allah's verses are denied and mocked, warning that silent presence implies consent and shares in the guilt.

Attributing mockery to Allah

From the paper: «

When reading verses where Allah is described as mocking the mockers Al-Baqarah 2:15, a believer must understand this according to the foundational rule of Sunni theology: affirming what Allah has revealed about Himself while declaring Him entirely free of human imperfection Ash-Shura 42:11. Human knowledge of the divine names and attributes is strictly bound by revelation Al-Baqarah 2:32, without asking how or comparing Him to created beings An-Nahl 16:60, Al-Ikhlas 112:4.

Mockery in human terms is a flaw, but when attributed to Allah, it is an attribute of absolute perfection and divine justice. It denotes recompensing mockers in kind: matching their schemes with just retribution. When the hypocrites feign belief to deceive Muslims and privately mock the faith Al-Baqarah 2:14, Allah leaves them to their delusions in this life, outwardly treating them according to worldly rulings of Islam. Then, in the Hereafter, their expectations are shattered.

On the Day of Resurrection, they seek to borrow light from the believers, only for a wall to separate them Al-Hadid 57:13-14. Called to prostrate before their Lord, their backs stiffen like solid planks Al-Qalam 68:42. When they mocked the warnings of the Hour, they are left to taste the very punishment they scoffed at Al-Jathiyah 45:32-37. Allah's mockery is thus the ultimate demonstration of His wisdom and sovereign retribution.

«وعليه فإن إثبات صفة الاستهزاء لله جل جلاله على ما أثبته له أهل السنة والجماعة، لا يورد أدنى اشتباه يكون مؤداه الاعتقاد بأن الله سبحانه وتعالى قد اتصف بصفات النقص، ولا يرد عليه أدنى إشكال بأن الله جل جلاله يشبه مخلوقاته في صفاتهم أو أفعالهم.»

Mockery of prophets and their followers

From the paper: «

The Quran recounts the mockery endured by messengers to comfort and strengthen the Prophet's heart along his challenging mission Hud 11:120, Al-Furqan 25:32. Every single community met their prophet with derision Ya-Sin 36:30, blinded by heedlessness and passion Al-A'raf 7:179.

  • Nuh: His people mocked him for building an ark on dry land, to which he replied that the believers would soon mock them Hud 11:38.
  • Ibrahim: Nimrod mockingly claimed power over life and death by executing one prisoner and sparing another, until Ibrahim silenced him with the rising sun Al-Baqarah 2:258, Az-Zukhruf 43:54.
  • Musa: Pharaoh mocked Musa's speech and poverty before his courtiers, scorning that he brought neither gold nor attending angels Az-Zukhruf 43:50-54.
  • The Prophet Muhammad: Polytheists pointed at him scornfully, asking if this was the man who condemned their false gods Al-Anbiya 21:36. Jewish opponents used ambiguous words like ra'ina to disguise slurs as polite address Al-Baqarah 2:104. Hypocrites feigned polite attention, only to ask sarcastically upon leaving what had just been said Muhammad 47:16, An-Nisa 4:27.

This scorn extends to the scholars and righteous callers who inherit the prophetic mission At-Tawbah 9:64-68, and to sincere believers ridiculed as unsophisticated Al-Baqarah 2:8-16, Al-An'am 6:112. Yet the prophets were completely above foolish ridicule; when accused of mocking, Musa firmly rejected it as ignorance Al-Baqarah 2:67, while Ibrahim's sharp wit exposed the helplessness of fabricated idols As-Saffat 37:88-93, Al-Anbiya 21:63.

«وقد جاءت على هذه الحال كل الأمم مع أنبيائها ورسلها، فلم يسلم نبي ولا رسول من مستهزئ.»

Targets of mockery

From the paper: «

Mockery manifests across several key aspects of faith:

  • Revealed Scriptures: When unable to counter divine truth, opponents turn away in sneering dismissal Al-A'raf 7:199, Ash-Shu'ara 26:5-6. They engage in false debates over details like the tree of Zaqqum or the keepers of Hell Al-Kahf 18:56. When a surah descends, hypocrites ask with sarcasm whether it increased anyone in faith, deepening their own spiritual disease At-Tawbah 9:124-125, An-Nisa 4:140.
  • Clear Proofs and Signs: Societies gifted with worldly power and keen faculties often treat divine verses as a joke, only to find the reality of what they ridiculed falling upon them Al-Ahqaf 46:26, Al-Kahf 18:106.
  • Divine Warnings: Confusing Allah's patience with incapacity, scoffing deniers ask why the threatened punishment has not arrived immediately Hud 11:8, Al-Anbiya 21:41.
  • Sacred Laws and Rulings: The Quran warns against treating divine rules lightly, particularly regarding marriage and divorce. Holding women out of spite or exploiting marital limits is explicitly condemned as taking Allah's signs in mockery Al-Baqarah 2:231.
  • Acts of Worship: Mockers harbor special resentment for visible rituals, particularly the call to prayer and the physical postures of Salah, displaying a profound lack of intellect Al-Ma'idah 5:57-58.
«وإن إنزال مثل هذه الأحكام في كتاب الله لهو من نعم الله عز وجل علينا والتي توجب علينا شكرها والقيام بحقها، لا أن يكون تعاملنا معها على سبيل الاستخفاف والتلاعب والاستهزاء.»

Causes of mockery

From the paper: «

The Quran reveals that mockery is never an isolated habit. It is an outward symptom of deeper spiritual sicknesses:

  • Disbelief (Kufr): Having rejected truth, deniers cannot tolerate the persistence of divine light Al-Anbiya 21:18, Ash-Shura 42:16, As-Saff 61:8-9. When reminded of divine signs, they turn away in scornful debate, representing the peak of injustice Al-Kahf 18:56-57.
  • Hypocrisy (Nifaq): Inwardly detached from faith, hypocrites mock the believers behind closed doors while congratulating themselves on being sophisticated peacemakers Al-Baqarah 2:9-14, Al-Baqarah 2:15. Even so, they live in constant fear that a divine revelation will expose their hidden treachery At-Tawbah 9:64, Muhammad 47:30.
  • Arrogance (Kibr): Conceit blinds a person from seeing anything higher than their own desires. When Quranic verses are recited, the arrogant person turns away stiffly, treating Allah's message as an inconvenience to worldly ambitions, preferring idle distraction and music instead Luqman 31:6-7.
  • Ignorance (Jahl): Humanity is innately prone to injustice and foolishness unless enlightened by divine guidance Al-Ahzab 33:72. Those who mock sacred truth simply fail to distinguish between what harms and what saves Luqman 31:6. When Musa was asked if he was mocking his people, he sought refuge from acting out of ignorance Al-Baqarah 2:67.
«يبقى الإنسان على أصله الذي خلقه الله سبحانه وتعالى عليه ما لم يرد الله عز وجل أن يكرمه بالعلم والهدى، وأعني بالأصل هنا: الجهل والضلال.»

Remedies for mockery

From the paper: «

Because mockery is a symptom of underlying spiritual ailments, the Quran provides practical remedies to curb its spread Al-Isra 17:82:

  • Treating the Root Causes: When mockers are confronted with the reality that their scoffing is an act of disbelief, those with residual good in their hearts may awaken, repent, and seek forgiveness before it is too late At-Tawbah 9:65-66.
  • Exposing the Mockers: Mockers thrive on secrecy, fearing public disgrace. The Quran dismantled this shield by announcing that Allah would unveil their hidden malice and slips of the tongue At-Tawbah 9:64, Muhammad 47:29-30. Knowing that their own words betray them breaks their brazenness.
  • Boycotting Their Gatherings: The Quran strictly prohibits sitting in spaces where Allah's signs are ridiculed or held in contempt An-Nisa 4:140. Remaining present in such assemblies without protesting signals silent agreement, which shares in the sin. A believer must speak out against the wrong if able, or leave the gathering entirely until the conversation shifts. Cutting off their audience denies them the attention they crave and protects the believer's own heart from spiritual contamination.
«والحاصل أن من حضر مجلسًا يعصى الله فيه، فإنه يتعين عليه الإنكار عليهم مع القدرة، أو القيام مع عدمها، وإن لم يفعلوا فإن الله سبحانه وتعالى سيجمعهم في نار جهنم يوم القيامة كما اجتمعوا على الكفر والموالاة في الدنيا، ولا ينفعهم مجرد كونهم في الظاهر مع المؤمنين.»

The fate of mockers

From the paper: «

Human life is far too serious to be squandered in scoffing at solemn realities Sad 38:67-68, Ash-Shu'ara 26:5-6. Those who choose contempt over reflection must face the inevitable consequences Ar-Rum 30:10.

In this life, mockers are stamped with the ugliest descriptions: hypocrites, disbelievers, and fools Al-Baqarah 2:67, An-Nisa 4:140. They are trapped in perpetual paranoia, imagining that every sudden warning or revealed announcement is directed at them At-Tawbah 9:127, Al-Munafiqun 63:4. Furthermore, divine justice guarantees that nations persistent in ridiculing their prophets are eventually seized and uprooted, no matter how long punishment is deferred Al-An'am 6:5, Ar-Ra'd 13:32.

In the Hereafter, the reversal is total. The deniers who brushed off resurrection as a fable will see their deeds turn against them Al-Jathiyah 45:32-37. They will be told that just as they neglected the message, they will be left in eternal torment, receiving neither relief nor excuse. Their fleeting worldly laughter ends in humiliation, while divine majesty and justice stand triumphant.

«ومن جملة ما آمنوا به اليوم الآخر هم المثابون المكرمون، أما الذين اتخذوا ما جاءهم به المرسلون سخريةً واستهزاءً، ومن جملته الإيمان باليوم الآخر، هم المعذبون المهانون.»

Takeaways

  1. Never Treat Sacred Rules Lightly

Divine limits, including everyday legal boundaries such as marriage and divorce, demand reverence. Bending sacred rules to cause harm or treating them as games constitutes taking Allah's signs in mockery Al-Baqarah 2:231.

  2. Leave Gatherings of Derision Immediately

Staying silent in an atmosphere where Islam or Allah's verses are mocked makes you complicit. A Muslim must either speak up to correct the disrespect or remove themselves completely from the setting An-Nisa 4:140.

  3. Root Out the Seeds of Arrogance

Mockery begins inside a proud heart that views others as inferior. Remembering our own inherent vulnerability and lack of knowledge preserves us from adopting the habits of the ignorant Al-Baqarah 2:67, Al-Ahzab 33:72.

Reflect

  • Have you ever caught yourself laughing at a joke or remark that belittled an Islamic teaching or practice?
  • When you encounter people who mock faith, what stops you from excusing yourself and walking away?
  • How can you ensure your own private conversations remain free of mocking tone, gestures, or dismissive glances?

It usually follows a specific action done by the person being ridiculed, whereas mockery can happen without any triggering action from the victim.
Haughty Sarcasm
It is driven purely by the speaker's own inward hatred or arrogance without any cause in the target, while mockery may involve a perceived pretext.
Backbiting Defamation
It focuses on finding faults and attacking character primarily in a person's absence, whereas mockery occurs both in their presence and behind their back.
Direct Accusation
Its aim is to cast suspicion and public doubt directly to someone's face, whereas mockery is aimed at belittling and degrading.
Joking
Its intention is cheerful, friendly conversation and playfulness, whereas mockery is driven by the desire to demean and humiliate.
Belittlement
It entails underestimating and trivializing someone whose true status is visibly greater than what the dismissive person acknowledges, whereas the victim of mockery may be ordinary.
Facial Gestures of Disdain
It is a narrow, specific form of mockery carried out solely through signals of the eyes and eyebrows, while mockery is broader and encompasses words, deeds, and signals.
