Surah Al-Kahf 18:56 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

وَمَا نُرْسِلُ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنذِرِينَ ۚ وَيُجَٰدِلُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱلْبَٰطِلِ لِيُدْحِضُوا۟ بِهِ ٱلْحَقَّ ۖ وَٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ ءَايَٰتِى وَمَآ أُنذِرُوا۟ هُزُوًۭا

English: We only send messengers to bring good news and to deliver warning, yet the disbelievers seek to refute the truth with false arguments and make fun of My messages and warnings.

Bengali: আমি রাসূলগনকে সুসংবাদ দাতা ও ভয় প্রদর্শন কারীরূপেই প্রেরণ করি এবং কাফেররাই মিথ্যা অবলম্বনে বিতর্ক করে, তা দ্বারা সত্যকে ব্যর্থ করে দেয়ার উদ্দেশে এবং তারা আমার নিদর্শনাবলীও যদ্বারা তাদেরকে ভয় প্রদর্শন করা হয়, সেগুলোকে ঠাট্টারূপে গ্রহণ করেছে।

Meaning & Reflection

'We send the messengers only as bringers of good news and warners; but those who disbelieve dispute with falsehood to refute the truth by it, and take My signs and warnings in mockery.' al-Saadi and Ibn Kathir note the messengers' limited, merciful role — to *announce and warn*, not to force — and the deniers' response: weaponising 'batil', falsehood, to argue truth away, and treating divine warnings as a joke. Ask yourself: two responses to the same signs are laid bare — receive them as good news and warning, or bat them away with clever falsehood and mockery. Mockery, especially, is the cheapest defence: laugh at a warning and I never have to weigh it. When God's signs reach me — through a verse, a jolt, a reminder — is my instinct to receive them soberly, or to reach for the dismissive joke, the sophisticated counter-argument, the ironic shrug that lets me off the hook of taking them seriously?
