Surah Al-Kahf 18:106 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

ذَٰلِكَ جَزَآؤُهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ بِمَا كَفَرُوا۟ وَٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ ءَايَٰتِى وَرُسُلِى هُزُوًا

English: Their recompense for having disbelieved and made fun of My messages and My messengers will be Hell.

Bengali: জাহান্নাম-এটাই তাদের প্রতিফল; কারণ, তারা কাফের হয়েছে এবং আমার নিদর্শনাবলী ও রসূলগণকে বিদ্রূপের বিষয় রূপে গ্রহণ করেছে।

Meaning & Reflection

'That is their recompense — Hell — for having disbelieved and taken My signs and My messengers in mockery.' al-Saadi and Ibn Kathir note the two named offences — disbelief, and the *mockery* of God's signs and messengers: not merely rejecting the truth but ridiculing it, treating the sacred as a joke. Ask yourself: mockery is singled out because it is the disbelief that has hardened into contempt — the sneer that shields a person from ever having to take the warning seriously. It is the cheapest and most self-protective response to truth: laugh, and I never have to answer. In an age that mocks the sacred as sport, this verse is pointed. When God's signs, His messengers, His guidance come before me, is my reflex reverence or ridicule? Do I ever join, even quietly, in the mockery of what is sacred — treating as a joke the very things this verse warns me not to?
