At a glance
Social relations in the Quran encompass the entire web of human ties, beginning with the family hearth, extending through neighbors and community, and reaching outward toward governance and pluralistic coexistence. Rather than viewing human beings as isolated units or purely economic cogs, the Quran approaches society as an interconnected whole where mutual care, moral accountability, and shared responsibility sustain the collective life of the believers.
At the core of the Quranic social architecture is an unyielding commitment to justice and compassion. The Quran establishes that genuine piety cannot be divorced from generous social spending, honoring marital and kinship covenants, protecting the marginalized, and curbing social deviance through balanced preventive and legal measures. Through these integrated guidance points, Islam cultivates an environment where personal spiritual growth harmonizes naturally with the health and dignity of human society.

Family relations
From the paper: «
The family forms the foundational cell and primary pillar of society; when it flourishes, the community thrives, and when it breaks down, social chaos follows. The Quran opens by highlighting human unity, reminding humanity that all people descend from a single soul and urging reverence toward kinship ties An-Nisa 4:1 and the divine wisdom in making mankind into lineages and marital relations Al-Furqan 25:54.
Within this home, marriage is instituted as a solemn covenant An-Nisa 4:21 founded on affection, mercy, and tranquil companionship Ar-Rum 30:21, Al-A'raf 7:189. The Quran honors marital harmony by granting reciprocal rights Al-Baqarah 2:228 and obligating men to live with their wives in kindness and patience even amid emotional friction An-Nisa 4:19. Children and grandchildren are cited as profound divine favors An-Nahl 16:72, alongside directives for modesty and domestic stability Al-Ahzab 33:33. When marital discord arises, the Quran prescribes neutral familial arbitration An-Nisa 4:35, and if separation is inevitable, it promises divine enrichment for both An-Nisa 4:130.
Beyond the nuclear home, the Quran vehemently condemns severing kinship ties Muhammad 47:22-23. Believers are urged to maintain generous spending on relatives even after personal hurt, prioritizing forgiveness over resentment An-Nur 24:22. It mandates care for non-inheriting kin in wills Al-Baqarah 2:180 and repeatedly commands giving relatives their due Al-Isra 17:26, An-Nahl 16:90, Ar-Rum 30:38.

Relationship with society
From the paper: «
Human beings are naturally social beings whose relational scope widens from the home to neighbors, guests, and the broader populace. The Quran frames societal interaction through the principle of comprehensive goodness, tying genuine faith and prayer directly to social relief for orphans, the destitute, and stranded travelers Al-Baqarah 2:177.
Neighborly care is paired directly with the worship of Allah and honoring parents, encompassing both relatives and distant companions An-Nisa 4:36. The paper emphasizes hadiths where Gabriel repeatedly urged neighborly care to the point of expecting inheritance rights, and where harming neighbors nullifies true faith.
Societal harmony also requires respecting home privacy and visiting etiquette. Believers must not linger past meals to burden their hosts Al-Ahzab 33:53, and must seek explicit permission and give peace greetings before entering any dwelling An-Nur 24:27. A crucial safeguard for domestic dignity is lowering the gaze, preventing suspicion and guarding purity An-Nur 24:30.
Finally, society flourishes through affinity and harmony. People naturally gravitate toward those who resemble them in character: pure souls seek the pure, and corrupt souls lean toward the corrupt An-Nur 24:26, matching the eschatological pairing of souls by type At-Takwir 81:7 and the prophetic depiction of spirits as assembled hosts drawing together through familiarity.

Religious relations
From the paper: «
Faith introduces a profound spiritual brotherhood that binds believers regardless of race, language, or tribal lineage Al-Hujurat 49:10. This covenant demands active reconciliation when disputes arise, mutual empathy described as a single solid structure, and abandoning envy, spying, and mockery Al-Hujurat 49:11-12. Believers are warned that worldly ties and lineage must never eclipse love for Allah, His Messenger, and struggle in His path At-Tawbah 9:23-24. The Quran celebrates divine grace in turning former enemies into united brethren Ali 'Imran 3:103 while condemning sectarian division Al-An'am 6:159 and harsh conduct, reminding that gentleness keeps hearts united Ali 'Imran 3:159.
Toward non-Muslims, the Quran sets a comprehensive charter of benevolence and equity. It explicitly permits and encourages goodwill, fair treatment, and kindness toward anyone who does not wage war against Muslims over religion or expel them from their homes Al-Mumtahanah 60:8-9.
Within an Islamic society, non-Muslim residents are recognized either through permanent covenanted citizenship or temporary safe-conduct. They enjoy security of life, property, and freedom of worship. The Quran honors Jews and Christians as People of the Book who share the primordial root of prophetic monotheism Ash-Shura 42:13, commanding believers to debate them only in the kindest, most courteous manner Al-Ankabut 29:46.

Relationship between the ruler and the ruled
From the paper: «
Governance in Islam is anchored in sacred trust and absolute justice. Rulers are commanded to deliver trusts to their rightful owners and judge between all people with impartial fairness An-Nisa 4:58. In return, the community is commanded to obey legitimate authority in matters of recognized good, though obedience ceases if it commands sin An-Nisa 4:59.
When disputes arise in public or private affairs, the final arbiter is divine revelation found in the Quran and prophetic tradition An-Nisa 4:59. True faith requires ungrudging acceptance of divine rulings An-Nisa 4:65. Furthermore, justice must remain upright and incorruptible, never swerving for personal bias, wealth, or poverty, even when testifying against oneself or beloved kin An-Nisa 4:135.
A central pillar of Quranic rule is mutual consultation. The paper stresses that political decisions and public interests must never be monopolized by autocratic decree; rather, believers conduct their communal affairs through shared deliberation Ash-Shura 42:38. Even the Prophet himself was divinely instructed to consult his companions in public affairs Ali 'Imran 3:159, affirming consultation as an enduring principle for healthy civic leadership.
«إن الناس لا يؤمنون -ابتداء- إلا أن يتحاكموا إلى منهج الله ممثلًا في أحكام الرسول، وباقيًا بعده في مصدريه القرآن والسنة بالبداهة، ولا يكفي أن يتحاكموا إليه -ليحسبوا مؤمنين- بل لا بد من أن يتلقوا حكمه مسلمين راضين، فهذا هو شرط الإيمان وحد الإسلام.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Social solidarity
From the paper: «
Social solidarity ensures every community member shares in protecting public welfare and uplifting the vulnerable. Rooted in moral conscience, it operates like a single body responding to pain.
Its practical expressions begin with mandatory zakah and voluntary charity, which purify wealth and nurture spiritual growth At-Tawbah 9:103, Al-Baqarah 2:177, Al-Ma'idah 5:2, Al-Baqarah 2:219, Al-Baqarah 2:215. Hoarding wealth and denying divine rights invite severe spiritual destruction Al-Baqarah 2:195, Ali 'Imran 3:180, At-Tawbah 9:34.
The Quran demands an equitable circulation of wealth, forbidding unlawful consumption An-Nisa 4:29, Al-Baqarah 2:188 and hoarding so assets do not circulate solely among the rich Al-Hashr 59:7, Al-Isra 17:27, Adh-Dhariyat 51:19.
Vulnerability is central to Quranic care, prioritizing several vulnerable groups:
- Orphans: strictly protecting their assets and dignified upbringing Al-An'am 6:152, Al-Baqarah 2:220, An-Nisa 4:10, An-Nisa 4:127.
- The distressed: granting respite or remission to indebted persons Al-Baqarah 2:280.
- The poor and destitute: giving them priority in zakah distribution At-Tawbah 9:60.
- Aging parents: serving them with utmost tenderness and honor Al-Isra 17:23.
- Captives: providing food and humane care Al-Insan 76:8.
- The heavily indebted: relieving debts incurred for essentials At-Tawbah 9:60.
- Stranded travelers: assisting individuals left resourceless abroad Al-Baqarah 2:215.
- Petitioners: addressing needy askers without harsh rebukes Ad-Duha 93:10.
«والتكافل الاجتماعي جزء من عقيدة المسلم والتزامه الديني، وهو نظام أخلاقي يقوم على الحب والإيثار ويقظة الضمير ومراقبة الله عز وجل، ولا يقتصر على حفظ حقوق الإنسان المادية، بل يشمل أيضًا المعنوية؛ وغايته التوفيق بين مصلحة المجتمع ومصلحة الفرد.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Social deviance and its treatment
From the paper: «
The Quran offers a distinct social balance between individual freedom and communal protection. It recognizes economic and natural disparities as divinely ordained tests to foster mutual service and civilizational development An-Nisa 4:32, An-Nahl 16:71, Al-Isra 17:21, Az-Zukhruf 43:32, Al-An'am 6:165, Hud 11:61, Al-Munafiqun 63:10, Al-Baqarah 2:273, Al-Baqarah 2:159, Az-Zumar 39:9. This natural variation is intended to enable reciprocal reliance, not social arrogance.
To curb destabilizing social crimes, the Quran institutes firm boundaries:
- Unlawful murder and brigandage: strictly punished, granting victim kin rightful authority while deterring public disorder Al-Isra 17:33, Al-Ma'idah 5:33-34, An-Nisa 4:92.
- Theft and bribery: cutting off wrongful appropriation to secure community assets Al-Ma'idah 5:38-39, Al-Baqarah 2:188.
- Fornication: public lashes to maintain purity and deter illicit vice An-Nur 24:2.
- Intoxicants and gambling: eradicated gradually to protect human intellect and dismantle malice and prayer neglect Al-Baqarah 2:219, An-Nisa 4:43, Al-Ma'idah 5:91.
Remedies prioritize prevention through cultivating God-consciousness Qaf 50:16, fulfilling family and communal duties At-Tahrim 66:6, revitalizing mosques as spiritual anchors An-Nur 24:36, boycotting corrupting media An-Nur 24:19, promoting Islamic education Az-Zumar 39:9, drawing lessons from prophetic role models Hud 11:120, facilitating early marriage, and lowering the gaze An-Nur 24:30-31, supported by fair legal penalties Al-Baqarah 2:179.
«إن كل البشر مسخر بعضهم لبعض، ودولاب الحياة يدور بالجميع، ويسخر بعضهم لبعض في كل وضع، وفي كل ظرف، فالله فاضل بينهم فجعل بعضهم أفضل من بعض في الدنيا بالرزق والرياسة والقوة والحرية والعقل والعلم.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم
