At a glance

In the Quran, darkness is far more than the physical absence of daylight. The Quran speaks of physical darkness, such as the obscurity of the night, the perils of deserts and stormy seas, and the layers enclosing an unborn child in the womb. Yet it places even greater emphasis on spiritual darkness: the states of disbelief, hypocrisy, doubt, and ignorance that blind the human heart.

While darkness is always mentioned in the plural, representing the countless paths of misguidance, divine light is always singular and cohesive. When a person turns away from Allah, their inner faculties of perception shut down, leaving them stranded in confusion. Understanding the Quranic perspective on darkness helps you recognize the subtle traps of spiritual blindness, appreciate Allah's constant care in the physical world, and actively seek the illumination of His revelation to guide your everyday steps.

Key verses

  1. Al-Baqarah 2:19-20: The paper examines the vivid parable of travelers caught in a heavy rainstorm filled with darkness, thunder, and lightning, illustrating how hypocrites vacillate in terror, taking steps only when light flashes and freezing when darkness envelops them.
  2. Al-Baqarah 2:17: The paper highlights the similitude of someone kindling a fire in a dark desert: as soon as the light illuminates the surroundings, Allah takes away their light, leaving them stranded in darkness because they deactivated their own faculties of hearing, sight, and reason.

Types of darkness

From the paper: «

The Quran divides darkness into two primary forms: physical and spiritual.

Physical darkness encompasses tangible conditions that obscure sight. This includes the perils of travel across land and sea An-Naml 27:63, Al-An'am 6:97, where harsh terrain and nightfall leave travelers vulnerable Al-An'am 6:63. It also includes the unseen depths of the earth Al-An'am 6:59, the three protective darknesses enclosing the fetus inside the mother's abdomen, womb, and placenta Az-Zumar 39:6, the belly of the whale that swallowed Yunus amidst the deep sea and night Al-Anbiya 21:87, the pitch-black abyss beneath ocean waves and storm clouds An-Nur 24:40, and the enveloping cover of night Ash-Shams 91:4, Al-Layl 92:1, Ad-Duha 93:2, Al-Qasas 28:71.

Spiritual darkness, by contrast, afflicts the soul. The Quran depicts the wavering condition of hypocrites through parables of extinguished fire Al-Baqarah 2:17 and overwhelming downpours where travelers freeze in terror whenever darkness returns Al-Baqarah 2:19-20. It also describes the darkness of ignorance and disbelief, wherein individuals close their ears, eyes, and hearts to divine signs Al-An'am 6:39. Though physically whole, their spiritual receptors are disabled, leaving them completely submerged in confusion.

Means of deliverance from physical darkness

From the paper: «

Allah has provided clear means for humanity to navigate physical obscurity and find their way safely through the world.

First, He created the radiant daylight. The Quran directs attention to the sun as an illuminating lamp that dissolves darkness across the globe Ash-Shams 91:1, Nuh 71:16, establishing a balanced cosmic rhythm with the moon so living beings can pursue their livelihood and rest Ya-Sin 36:37-40, Yunus 10:5.

Second, Allah set the stars as navigational signs. In trackless deserts or open waters, travelers rely on the positions and orbits of the celestial bodies to determine their route Al-An'am 6:97, An-Nahl 16:16. Scholars note that studying the mechanics of star paths for travel and prayer directions is permitted and praiseworthy, whereas astrological superstition is forbidden.

Third, Allah teaches humans to turn to Him through sincere supplication when caught in overwhelming perils. When sea travelers encounter raging winds and towering waves, they strip away false pretenses and invoke Allah alone Yunus 10:22. In response, Allah's mercy and the prayers of His angels bring relief, comforting believers and steering them safely from danger toward security Al-Ahzab 33:43, Al-Ahzab 33:56, Ghafir 40:7.

«وأخبر سبحانه أنه يرحم عباده المؤمنين، ويثني عليهم، وتدعو لهم ملائكته؛ ليخرجهم من ظلمات الجهل والضلال إلى نور الإيمان والهداية.»

Volume 11

Means of deliverance from spiritual darkness

From the paper: «

Deliverance from spiritual confusion requires divine illumination, which the Quran details through three essential paths.

First, genuine faith in Allah and obedience to Him revives a lifeless heart, granting it an inner light to walk uprightly among people Al-An'am 6:122. This divine light resembles a luminous lamp within pure glass An-Nur 24:35, which shines outward in a believer's conduct, brings certainty to the mind, and manifests on the Day of Resurrection as a radiance guiding them across the bridge to safety.

Second, following the Messenger and adhering to his guidance provides a clear standard of truth. The Prophet was sent as a shining lamp Al-Ma'idah 5:15, Al-A'raf 7:157. Ibn al-Qayyim observed that those who abandon the messengers fall into ten distinct layers of darkness across their life, grave, and eternity, while faithful followers dwell in layers of light.

Third, holding firmly to Allah's revealed Book dispels doubt and cultural myths. Revelation is described as both spirit and light Ash-Shura 42:52, sent specifically to bring humanity out of the depths of darkness into illuminated certainty Ibrahim 14:1, Al-Hadid 57:9, At-Talaq 65:11, just as Moses was commanded to extract his people from ignorance into truth Ibrahim 14:5.

Consequences of remaining in darkness

From the paper: «

Remaining in spiritual darkness yields severe harms across every dimension of human existence.

It disables innate human faculties. When people close their hearing, sight, and intellect to divine guidance, they become like the deaf and mute Al-Isra 17:36, Al-An'am 6:39, failing to extract true wisdom from life. Consequently, they fail to benefit from the cosmic resources Allah subjected for human welfare Ali 'Imran 3:191, Ibrahim 14:32, Ibrahim 14:33, An-Nahl 16:14, Az-Zukhruf 43:13.

Furthermore, darkness and light can never be equal in a sound human nature Ar-Ra'd 13:16. Modern advances, when severed from faith, breed arrogance and destructive weaponry Al-Alaq 96:6-7, Al-Hajj 22:46. True civilization relies on divine reminders: observing celestial cycles Yunus 10:5, utilizing means of transport An-Nahl 16:8, and building homes An-Nahl 16:80. The Quran contrasts the enduring kingdom of Dawud, preserved through gratitude Saba 34:10, with the ruin of the people of Saba after they denied their blessings Saba 34:15-19, praising those who reflect deeply Ali 'Imran 3:190, Ta-Ha 20:54, Al-Fajr 89:5.

Finally, staying in darkness leads to misery in this world and punishment in the next. Turning from Allah's remembrance results in inner anxiety and a constricted life Ta-Ha 20:123-126, followed by suffering in the grave and the Fire Ghafir 40:46, Al-An'am 6:93, Al-Anfal 8:50, where the unjust are enveloped in profound obscurity Al-Hadid 57:13.

«ولكن الاتجاه المادي الكافر يقطع ما بين الكون وخالقه، ويقطع ما بين العلوم الكونية والحقيقة الأزلية الأبدية، ومن هنا يتحول العلم -أجمل هبة من الله للإنسان- لعنة تطارد الإنسان، وتحيل حياته إلى جحيم منكرة، وإلى حياة قلقة مهددة، وإلى خواء روحي يطارد الإنسان كالمارد الجبار!»

Takeaways

  1. Awaken Your Perceptual Faculties

Treat your sight, hearing, and heart as sacred trusts. The Quran warns that neglecting to use them for moral reflection degrades them into spiritual deafness and blindness.

  2. Anchor Scientific Knowledge in Faith

Explore the physical universe with humility. When technical discoveries are disconnected from recognizing the Creator, they produce pride and hollow destruction rather than genuine human flourishing.

  3. Turn to Allah in Every Distress

Whenever life feels dark or overwhelming, emulate the sincerity of desperate sea travelers by supplicating directly to Allah, asking Him to deliver you into the clarity of His light.

  4. Seek Consistency in Your Spiritual Walk

Guard against the hypocrite's tendency to move forward only when circumstances are easy. Commit to revelation so your guidance remains steady even when trials cloud your path.

Reflect

  • Are there areas of your daily life where you use your intellect for worldly gains while ignoring spiritual reflection?
  • When facing sudden anxiety or hardship, is your immediate instinct to call upon Allah with sincere humility?
  • How can you actively use the Quran this week to bring moral clarity to an uncertain choice you are facing?

Linguistic meaning

The Arabic root for darkness denotes the absence of illumination and light, and it is also linked to placing something where it does not belong through transgression.

«ظلم: الظّاء واللّام والميم أصلان صحيحان، أحدهما: خلاف الضّياء والنّور، والآخر- وضع الشّيء غير موضعه تعدّيًا، فالأول: الظّلمة، والجمع ظلماتٌ، والظّلام: اسم الظّلمة، وقد أظلم المكان إظلامًا، والأصل الآخر: ظلمه يظلمه ظلمًا، والأصل الثاني: وضع الشّيء في غير موضعه.»

Technical meaning

Al-Jurjani defines darkness as the absence of light in something whose nature is to be illuminated, or whatever obscures one's horizon, place, or affairs.

How it differs from related terms

النور Light
Unlike darkness, which is manifold and plural in the Quran, light is singular and unified, representing a diffused illumination that actively enables vision, insight, and true guidance.
Radiance
Radiance signifies an intense, complete, and self-originating brightness, such as the heat and light radiating from the sun, whereas darkness represents total obscurity.
Night
Night is the specific temporal period lasting from sunset until true dawn, functioning as the natural setting paired with darkness rather than being synonymous with darkness itself.
