English: Or [like people who, under] a cloudburst from the sky, with its darkness, thunder, and lightning, put their fingers into their ears to keep out the thunderclaps for fear of death- God surrounds the disbelievers.

Meaning & Reflection

'Or like a rainstorm from the sky, in which are darkness, thunder, and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps, in dread of death; and God encompasses the disbelievers.' al-Saadi and Ibn Kathir note the second parable — the hypocrites glimpse faith only in *flashes of fear* (the lightning), recoiling from its demands (the thunder) with their fingers in their ears, trying to block out what terrifies them. Ask yourself: this captures a particular relationship with faith — engaging it only in crises, when fear flashes, then stopping my ears against its harder truths as soon as the panic passes. The rain (guidance, mercy) is life-giving, but they experience only its terror. And 'God encompasses' them — there is no blocking out with fingers in the ears the One who surrounds all. Do I turn to faith only in the lightning-flashes of fear, then plug my ears against its steady demands — forgetting that the One I'm avoiding encompasses me entirely?
