At a glance

Light in the Quran is both a physical reality that illuminates our sight and an inner, spiritual clarity that awakens the heart. Physical light reveals the material world around us through the sun, moon, and stars, while divine revelation guides the inner insight of believers toward truth, moral certainty, and upright living.

Throughout the Quran, Allah contrasts light with darkness. While darkness is always plural in the spiritual sense to represent the fractured, tangled paths of falsehood and confusion, light is uniquely singular. Truth is unified, coherent, and radiant, originating from Allah and guiding human beings away from spiritual blindness.

Ultimately, the light you nurture within your heart through faith, sincere repentance, and upright action becomes your visible beacon in the Hereafter. As darkness overtakes the Day of Judgment, this inner knowledge transforms into a radiant light shining before you, guiding you safely across the bridge to eternal Paradise.

Key verses

  3. As-Saff 61:8: Falsehood seeks to extinguish Allah's light with spoken opposition, yet Allah promises to complete and protect His divine religion despite the resistance of those who reject it.
  4. Az-Zumar 39:69: On the Day of Judgment, the earth will shine with the light of its Lord as absolute divine justice is established and every soul is judged without the slightest oppression.
  5. Al-An'am 6:1: In the opening of Surah al-An'am, Allah pairs darkness and light in the physical creation, referring to the darkness of the night and the light of the day.
  6. Al-Hadid 57:12-13: Believing men and women will walk with their personal light running before them and on their right, while hypocrites are cut off behind an impassable barrier, begging in vain for a share of that light.
  7. Yunus 10:5: Allah made the sun a radiant brilliance and the moon an illuminated light, setting their precise phases so humanity can reckon time and recognize divine artistry.
  8. At-Tawbah 9:32: Disbelievers attempt to blow out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah refuses anything except the ultimate fulfillment and spread of His guiding truth.

The pairing of light with darkness

From the paper: «اقتران النور بالظلمات»

In the Quran, light and darkness are contrasted in eleven distinct passages. Except for the physical mention of day and night in the opening of Surah al-An'am Al-An'am 6:1, every spiritual contrast presents darkness as disbelief and light as true faith.

A striking pattern in these verses is that darkness is always pluralized (zulumat), while light (nur) remains strictly singular. Falsehood and error take endless forms: the darkness of ignorance, obstinacy, following blind imitation, yielding to base desires, or falling into hypocrisy. Darkness is fragmented and multiplied by its varied causes, just as sensory shadows differ between the darkness of night, deep clouds, prisons, and graves. By contrast, truth is unified and undivided. Divine guidance is one straight path Al-An'am 6:153, radiant and clear, with no divergent branches or confusing detours.

The Quran also systematically places darkness before light Al-An'am 6:1, reflecting the order of creation, as darkness preceded the illumination of the universe. In the rhetoric of the Quran, this deliberate pairing employs antithesis (tibaq) to highlight opposing realities, alongside explicit metaphor (isti'arah tasrihiyyah), where darkness stands for misguidance and light embodies knowledge, clarity, and living faith.

Light as an attribute of Allah Almighty

From the paper: «النور من صفات الله تعالى»

Allah describes Himself in the Quran as the Light of the heavens and the earth An-Nur 24:35. Scholars explain that Allah is the illuminator and supreme governor of both realms, regulating creation through flawless wisdom and clear, decisive proofs. His light also refers to His revealed Book Al-Ma'idah 5:15 and His messenger who conveys divine guidance.

The Quran also states that the earth will shine with the light of its Lord on the Day of Judgment Az-Zumar 39:69. Scholars such as al-Razi explain that this does not mean Allah resembles physical, observable light, as physical light is a created phenomenon. Rather, it signifies the radiant manifestation of absolute divine justice, where all oppression is removed. Alternatively, the light mentioned is a special created illumination that Allah honors by attributing it to Himself, much like the expression "the House of Allah."

Furthermore, the Prophet sought refuge in the light of Allah's countenance, which dispels all darkness. While physical light can be seen by the eyes and intellectual light is perceived by the inner mind, the divine light of Allah's essence is beyond human comprehension. Humanity cannot fully grasp even the essence of created physical light, electricity, or transmission waves. It is therefore natural that Allah's transcendent light remains veiled by light itself, beyond the finite capacity of human sight or intellect.

«وأسنده رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى وجهه تعالى بقوله: (أعوذ بنور وجهك الذي أشرقت له الظلمات)، ومثله في آثار أخرى.»

Types of light

From the paper: «أنواع النور»

The Quran speaks of light in two distinct domains: the sensory (al-nur al-hissi) and the spiritual (al-nur al-ma'nawi).

Sensory light is directly perceived by eyesight:

  • The Moon: Allah appointed the moon as a soft light (nur) and the sun as blazing radiance (diya'), fixing lunar phases so humanity can calculate months, years, and religious timings Yunus 10:5, Nuh 71:16.
  • Revealed Scriptures: The Quran and earlier revelations are physical books containing illuminating guidance. The Quran enlightens hearts, dispelling the darkness of doubt Al-A'raf 7:157. Similarly, the Torah given to Moses and the Gospel given to Jesus were revealed as light and guidance to resolve complex disputes and remove suspicions Al-Ma'idah 5:44, Al-Ma'idah 5:46, Al-An'am 6:91.

Spiritual light is grasped through the insight of the soul (basirah):

  • Prophethood: The Prophet Muhammad is described as a light that makes divine truth clear to human hearts Al-Ma'idah 5:15.
  • Faith: True belief is a living light placed in the believer's inner self Ash-Shura 42:52. Sincere repentance preserves and perfects this inward certainty At-Tahrim 66:8.
  • Guidance: Allah's revelation brings humanity out of the darkness of ignorance into the certainty of knowledge Al-Hadid 57:9.

As scholar al-Sha'rawi noted, sensory light enables worldly life, but spiritual guidance organizes human purpose. When a servant advances in righteousness, Allah multiplies their light, granting deep discernment and increased piety Al-Anfal 8:29, Muhammad 47:17.

«وكان عليهم أن يفهموا أن نور الله المعنوي مثل نوره الحسي لا يمكن الاستغناء عنه، لذلك جاء في أثر علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه: (من تركه من جبار قصمه الله، ومن ابتغى الهد في غيره أضله الله).»

The light of truth between its advocates and enemies

From the paper: «نور الحق بين دعاته وأعدائه»

The mission of Allah's messengers, and the scholars who inherit their legacy, is to lead mankind out of the depths of darkness into light Al-Ahzab 33:45-46. The Prophet Muhammad was sent as an illuminating lamp (siraj munir). He called people to Allah alone, without seeking worldly power, wealth, tribal prestige, or personal glory. His message delivered a lucid worldview that clarified human origin, moral purpose, and destiny in a direct manner that resonates deeply with human nature.

Throughout history, adversaries have attempted to extinguish Allah's divine light through hostile words, deceit, and flawed doubts At-Tawbah 9:32, As-Saff 61:8. Al-Razi noted that their efforts are as absurd and futile as someone trying to blow out the blazing light of the sun with their mouth. The proofs supporting Allah's message are unassailable:

  • Overwhelming miracles granted to the messengers.
  • The inimitable Quran, revealed through an unlettered prophet who never studied books.
  • A sacred law entirely centered on revering Allah, promoting self-purification, and detachment from fleeting worldly ambitions.
  • Flawless teachings completely free from moral defect or devotion to anything other than the Creator.

Allah guarantees that He will complete and preserve His light, elevating His religion above all earthly opposition At-Tawbah 9:32.

Light on the Day of Resurrection

From the paper: «النور يوم القيامة»

On the Day of Resurrection, inner faith materializes into physical light. For the believers, this radiance runs before them and on their right hands Al-Hadid 57:12, At-Tahrim 66:8. The light is placed before them so they may look forward with joy, and on their right where they receive their records of good deeds and honor their pledge to the Prophet.

The intensity of this light corresponds directly to each person's deeds and knowledge in the world. As the companions noted, some believers will possess a light as towering as a mountain, others like a palm tree, while the weakest among them will have light only on their big toe, flickering on and off. Seeing others with brighter illumination, believers humbly pray: "Our Lord, perfect our light for us and forgive us" At-Tahrim 66:8.

In terrifying darkness, hypocrites will beg the believers to let them borrow from their brilliance Al-Hadid 57:13. They will be told mockingly to turn back and seek light where it was earned, only for an impenetrable barrier to fall between them, containing mercy on the inside and torment on the outside. As narrated by companions, hypocrites remain deceived until the light is divided, leaving them in pitch darkness An-Nur 24:40, An-Nisa 4:142.

Martyrs and the truthful (al-siddiqun) enjoy the loftiest honors, granted distinct light and immense reward close to their Lord Al-Hadid 57:19.

«يمرون على الصراط، منهم من نوره مثل الجبل، ومنهم من نوره مثل النخلة، وأدناهم نورًا من نوره على إبهامه يطفأ مرة ويوقد أخرى).»

Light in Quranic parables

From the paper: «النور في المثل القرآني»

The Quran employs light across three expressive forms of parables:

  1. Explicit Parables (al-mathal al-zahir): These state the comparison directly. In Surah al-Baqarah, the hypocrite is likened to someone who lights a fire; when it illuminates the surroundings, Allah takes away their light and leaves them in utter darkness Al-Baqarah 2:17. Another example is the famous Verse of Light An-Nur 24:35, where divine illumination in the heart is compared to a niche housing a lamp inside a radiant glass, fueled by pure olive oil from a blessed tree.
  1. Implicit Parables (al-mathal al-kamin): Here, the comparison is understood from context without the word "parable." Allah depicts the believer who was spiritually dead, whom Allah revived and gave a light with which to walk among people, in sharp contrast to one trapped in inescapable darkness Al-An'am 6:122.
  1. Proverbial Parables (al-mathal al-mursal): These are Quranic phrases that function like living aphorisms without explicit comparative particles, such as describing the Prophet as an illuminating lamp (siraj munir) Al-Ahzab 33:46.

As scholar al-Fayruzabadi concluded, light is that which is clear in itself and makes other things manifest. Whether experienced as intellectual insight, revealed scripture, or eternal radiance, light represents divine grace rescuing mankind from ruin.

Takeaways

  1. Pursue Unified Truth

Falsehood is fragmented into many dark alleys of desire, doubt, and imitation, but divine truth is singular, constant, and luminous; anchor your life to the Quran to stay on the one straight path.

  2. Nurture Your Spiritual Vision

Sensory sight helps you navigate the physical world, but only the spiritual light of faith and insight (basirah) allows you to discern right from wrong and recognize Allah's purpose in your life.

  3. Let Sincere Repentance Guard Your Light

Repentance wipes away sins and safeguards your faith, ensuring that your light remains steady, growing, and protected when facing the terrifying darkness of the Day of Judgment.

  4. Build Your Radiance Through Daily Action

The brilliance that guides you across the bridge to Paradise is forged in this world through the depth of your devotion, regular worship, ablution, and moral integrity.

Reflect

  • In what areas of your daily routine do you feel pulled toward conflicting distractions, and how can the singular light of the Quran bring you back to clarity?
  • If your inner faith were made visible right now, how brightly would it shine, and what habits can you adopt to strengthen its glow?
  • How can you embody the qualities of an illuminating lamp in the lives of your family and community?

Linguistic meaning

Linguistically, al-nur means illumination or light, originating from an Arabic root that signifies brilliance, movement, and rapid radiance. It refers to light of any kind or its rays, and is also applied to tree blossoms and tall landmarks due to their clarity and visibility.

«والنون والواو والراء (نور) أصلٌ صحيح يدل على إضاءة واضطراب وقلة ثبات.»

Technical meaning

Terminologically, light is diffused illumination that assists vision. It exists in two categories: intellectual light perceived by inner insight, such as reason and revelation, and sensory light perceived by the eyes, radiating from luminous bodies like the sun, moon, and stars.

«هو الضوء المنتشر الذي يعين على الإبصار، وذلك ضربان: ضرب معقول بعين البصيرة؛ وهو ما انتشر من الأمور الإلهية: كنور العقل، ونور القرآن.»

How it differs from related terms

الضياء Brilliance (Diya')
While light (nur) is general and can refer to illumination received or reflected from another source (such as the moon), brilliance (diya') specifically denotes intense radiation originating from a self-luminous body, such as the sun.
السنا Flashing Brightness (Sana)
Unlike the sustained diffusion of general light, al-sana refers to the sharp, vivid flash of lightning emerging from clouds, bearing additional connotations of elevated grandeur, height, and glory.
المشكاة The Niche (Mishkah)
Al-mishkah is not light itself, but the physical non-through wall niche that houses, holds, and concentrates light, allowing a lamp within it to radiate with maximum brightness.
السراج The Lamp (Siraj)
Al-siraj is the actual luminous vessel or source that produces bright, beautiful light and warmth (such as a burning wick or the sun), whereas light (nur) is the spread of illumination resulting from it.
