At a glance

The Quran speaks extensively about the Christians (النَّصَارَى al-Nasara), who identify as the followers of Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him). Through historical accounts, theological corrections, and ethical guidelines, the Quran offers a complete portrait of their origins, their deviations, and their righteous adherents.

While the Quran rejects deviations such as the Trinity, the divine sonship of Jesus, and his worship alongside Mary, it also recognizes that true disciples were sincere monotheists. It honors monks and priests who wept upon hearing the truth and commands Muslims to engage them with fairness, courtesy, and justice.

Key verses

  1. As-Saff 61:14: Jesus calls upon his disciples to be helpers of Allah, highlighting that true followers were defined by their support for divine truth.
  2. Al-Baqarah 2:113: Exposes mutual sectarian intolerance where Jews and Christians denied each other any validity despite reading revelation.
  3. At-Tawbah 9:30: Clarifies that claiming Jesus is the son of Allah mimics the beliefs of earlier pagans and deviates from pure monotheism.
  4. Al-Qasas 28:54: Promises a double reward to those among the People of the Book who believed in their scripture and then believed in Prophet Muhammad.
  5. Al-Ma'idah 5:82: Identifies sincere Christians, especially their humble priests and monks, as being nearest in affection to the believers.
  6. Al-Baqarah 2:109: Urges Muslims to pardon and bear patiently when some among the People of the Book seek to turn believers away out of envy.

Words to know

النَّصَارَى `al-Nasara`

The nation and followers of Prophet Jesus, named either from supporting one another and Allah's message or after the village of Nazareth.

Appears 158 times in the Quran.

Most common forms:

Root: ن ص ر

Ahl al-Kitab`

The communities granted divine scripture, specifically the Jews who were given the Torah and the Christians who received the Gospel.

الْحَوَارِيُّونَ `al-Hawariyyun`

The elite, sincere companions and chosen supporters of Jesus who upheld pure faith and aided him in preaching.

Isra'il`

An honorific title given to Prophet Jacob, meaning servant of God, from whom the twelve tribes descended.

Bani Isra'il`

The Children of Israel, being the genealogical descendants and twelve tribes springing from Prophet Jacob.

Association of Christians with Jews in the Quran

From the paper: «

The Quran frequently pairs Christians alongside Jews when conveying news, issuing reprimands, or offering praise. This pairing reflects several shared realities:

  • Shared Scriptural Roots: Both groups are People of the Book. The foundational scripture uniting them was the Torah revealed to Moses Al-Isra 17:2, while the Gospel given to Jesus arrived as a confirmation and completion of that law Ali 'Imran 3:49.
  • Common Lineage: Both groups trace back to the Children of Israel, the descendants of Prophet Jacob. The primary earthly missions of Moses and Jesus were addressed specifically to the tribes of Israel.
  • Shared Doctrinal Errors: Both communities fell into theological excesses, such as attributing divine sonship to human beings At-Tawbah 9:30 and elevating their religious scholars and ascetics to lords alongside Allah At-Tawbah 9:31.
  • Shared Behavior: Factions within both groups concealed known scriptural truths, including prophecies regarding Prophet Muhammad Al-Baqarah 2:146, and displayed persistent refusal to accept truth unless followers conformed entirely to their sectarian creed Al-Baqarah 2:120.

The creed of Christians

From the paper: «

Original Christian teaching rested on pure monotheism, but theological innovations gradually transformed the faith. The Quran addresses three core doctrinal claims:

  • The Divinity of Jesus and Mary: Sincere monotheism was replaced by deifying Jesus and his mother Al-Ma'idah 5:17. The Quran refutes this by highlighting their complete human vulnerability: neither could ward off destruction if Allah willed it Al-Ma'idah 5:17, and both consumed ordinary food. Jesus explicitly commanded his people to worship Allah alone Al-Ma'idah 5:72 and proclaimed his servitude from infancy Maryam 19:30, Maryam 19:36. On the Day of Resurrection, Jesus will openly disassociate himself before all creation from anyone who took him or his mother as deities Al-Ma'idah 5:116, Al-Ma'idah 5:119.
  • Divine Sonship: The claim that Jesus is the son of God At-Tawbah 9:30 mimics pagan doctrines. The Quran demonstrates the absolute impossibility of God taking a child: He is the sole Originator of existence who has no spouse Al-An'am 6:101, Al-Mu'minun 23:91. Creating Jesus without a human father is an act of divine decree, not physical parenthood Maryam 19:35, just as Adam was created without father or mother Al-Kahf 18:4, Maryam 19:93.
  • The Trinity: The Quran commands Christians not to exceed limits in religion and to cease saying "three" An-Nisa 4:171, Al-Ma'idah 5:73. Assigning eternal independent hypostases or claiming God resides in a trinity of entities is an invalid deviation unseen in the teachings of any prior prophet.
«فالآية الكريمة تدل على بشرية المسيح وأمه عليهما السلام وتبين عجز المسيح ابن مريم وعدم قدرته دفع الهلاك عن نفسه ولا عن أمه عليهما السلام، والعجز ضد القدرة وهو ليس من صفات الإله.»

False claims and assertions of Christians

From the paper: «

Beyond theological doctrines, Christians advanced exclusive assertions that the Quran systematically dismantles:

  • Monopoly Over Paradise: They asserted that none would enter Paradise except Jews or Christians Al-Baqarah 2:111. The Quran dismisses this as baseless wishful thinking, challenging them to bring proof and declaring that salvation belongs to whoever submits entirely to Allah while practicing goodness Al-Baqarah 2:94, Al-Baqarah 2:112.
  • Guidance Restricted to Their Fold: They maintained that true guidance lies solely in adopting their denomination Al-Baqarah 2:135. The Quran instructs believers to follow the unadulterated monotheism of Abraham and accept all prophets without distinction Al-Baqarah 2:136.
  • Claiming to Be Children and Beloved of God: When they claimed favored status as God's children and beloved ones Al-Ma'idah 5:18, the Quran asked why He punishes them for their sins Al-Baqarah 2:80. True favor is tied to obedience, not ancestry.
  • Claiming Earlier Prophets for Their Sect: They alleged Abraham and his prophetic descendants were Christians or Jews Al-Baqarah 2:140. The Quran exposes this historical impossibility: the Torah and Gospel were revealed centuries after Abraham Ali 'Imran 3:65, Ali 'Imran 3:67, Ali 'Imran 3:68, Al-Baqarah 2:133.
  • Denying Truth to Other Revelations: Christians declared that Jews held no truth, and Jews declared the same of Christians Al-Baqarah 2:113. The Quran exposes their obstinacy, as their own scriptures attested to one another, and notes they possess nothing valid until they uphold the original revealed commandments Al-Ma'idah 5:68, Ali 'Imran 3:112.
«لذا كذب الله تعالى دعواهم وبين أنها مجرد أماني لا يدركوها بالتمني، وأن الجنة متاحة لكل من يعمل لها ولا تقتصر على طائفة دون أخرى بل هي لكل من عمل صالحًا وأسلم وجهه لله تعالى وهو محسن.»

Christians before Islam

From the paper: «

Prior to Islam, those identifying with Jesus split into two distinct paths: sincere monotheists and those who corrupted their covenant.

  • Monotheistic Believers: Divine covenants required every prophet to believe in and aid the upcoming messenger Ali 'Imran 3:81-82. Sincere early Christians preserved original monotheism and awaited the final prophet. Historical figures like the monk Bahira, the Negus of Abyssinia, Salman al-Farsi, and righteous ascetics recognized truth when it arrived. The Quran praises those who recite scripture faithfully Al-Baqarah 2:121, spend nights in humble prostration, enjoin right, forbid wrong, and race toward good deeds Ali 'Imran 3:113-115, Al-Isra 17:107-109. Believers who maintained their faith and embraced the Quran receive a doubled reward for their enduring patience Al-Qasas 28:52-54.
  • Altering Religion and Its Consequence: A different group broke their solemn pledges As-Saff 61:6. When they abandoned essential parts of their divine message, Allah cast mutual enmity and hatred among their sects until the Day of Resurrection Al-Ma'idah 5:14. The Quran notes that they merely "said: we are Christians" Al-Ma'idah 5:82, pointing out that they innovated titles and creedal dogmas while abandoning the upright way of the disciples As-Saff 61:14.

Christians after Islam

From the paper: «

With the dawn of Islam, the reaction of Christians divided along sharply contrasting lines:

«أي:ينهى هذه الأمة أن تكون كالأمم الماضية في تفرقهم واختلافهم، وتركهم الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر مع قيام الحجة عليهم.»

The tolerance of Islam toward Christians

From the paper: «

Despite doctrinal disagreements, the Quran established an unprecedented standard of tolerance, fairness, and human dignity toward Christians:

  • Pardoning and Forbearance: Believers were guided to pardon prejudice and endure mistreatment with patience Al-Baqarah 2:109, An-Nisa 4:46, while preserving religious dignity under legal covenants At-Tawbah 9:29.
  • No Religious Compulsion: Freedom of conscience is firmly anchored in the principle that faith cannot be forced Al-Baqarah 2:256, Ali 'Imran 3:110.
  • Honor of Jesus and Mary: Muslims honor Jesus as an exalted prophet and Mary as a truthful saint Al-Baqarah 2:285, with a full surah named after Mary and Quranic verses detailing their miraculous lives Al-Ma'idah 5:72-76.
  • Common Theological Ground: Christians are addressed with the honorable title of "People of the Book" Ali 'Imran 3:98-99 and invited to unite upon common monotheistic ground Ali 'Imran 3:64 through graceful dialogue Al-Ankabut 29:46.
  • Social and Marital Integration: Islamic law permits eating their permissible slaughtered food and marrying their chaste women Al-Ma'idah 5:5, fostering familial bonds.
  • Recognizing Moral Goodness and Justice: Sincere Christians are commended for humility, mercy, and compassion Al-Ma'idah 5:82-85, Al-Hadid 57:27, while receiving doubled reward upon embracing Islam Al-Qasas 28:52-54. Furthermore, the Quran explicitly commands kindness, generosity, and scrupulous justice toward all non-hostile neighbors Al-Mumtahanah 60:8, and Muslims celebrated when Christian Romans prevailed over fire-worshipping Persians Ar-Rum 30:2-5.
«والمتأمل في القرآن الكريم يجد الآيات العديدة والمتنوعة في بيان سماحة الإسلام مع النصارى وغيرهم، وأن هذا التسامح هو جوهر تعاليم الإسلام التي جاءت لتحفظ كرامة الإنسان وحقوقه حتى وإن كان من غير المسلمين.»

Takeaways

  1. Upholding Pure Monotheism Without Exaggeration

Love and reverence for righteous messengers must never cross into deification. The Quran warns that elevating prophets or scholars beyond their human rank undermines pure worship of Allah An-Nisa 4:171.

  2. Submitting to Evidence Rather than Tribal Claims

Salvation is not guaranteed by ancestral heritage or sectarian names, but through sincere devotion to Allah and moral excellence Al-Baqarah 2:111-112.

  3. Responding to Hostility with Grace and Principled Firmness

When encountering religious friction or sectarian prejudice, Muslims are called to exercise patient forbearance while maintaining uncompromised conviction Al-Baqarah 2:109.

  4. Practicing Fairness and Benevolence Toward All People

Doctrinal disagreement never justifies injustice. The Quran actively commands fair treatment, neighborly kindness, and courteous dialogue toward all who live peacefully Al-Mumtahanah 60:8.

Reflect

  • How can you balance firm conviction in your own faith with compassionate and just treatment of non-Muslim neighbors?
  • In what ways might communities today fall into sectarian arrogance similar to claiming exclusive salvation without moral proof?
  • When reading about the humble tears of sincere monks upon hearing truth, how soft is your own heart when listening to the Quran?
  • How do you ensure your respect for religious leaders does not cross into accepting their words uncritically against divine guidance?

Linguistic meaning

The term derives from the root letters nun-sad-ra (ن ص ر), signifying assistance, support, and victory against adversaries. It is also linked linguistically to the Syrian town of Nazareth (Nasirah), to which the followers of Christ were attributed.

Technical meaning

In technical usage, Christians are the religious community that claims affiliation with Jesus Christ, the messenger of Allah and His Word. While initially referring specifically to his upright disciples who supported Allah's cause, it eventually became a general designation for all who adopted that faith.

«لا يخرج معناه الاصطلاحي عن معناه اللغوي، فالمقصود بالنصارى اصطلاحًا:هم أمة المسيح عيسى ابن مريم رسول الله وكلمته عليه الصلاة والسلام .»
