Meaning and reflection

Wording

This verse opens a window into the unwavering persistence of Allah's messengers and the obstinate rejection they faced. It recounts the scene with the peoples of 'Ad and Thamud, whose messengers came to them, calling them to worship Allah alone.

The Messengers' Comprehensive Approach

The Quran beautifully describes the messengers' efforts with the phrase "مِن بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ" (from before them and from behind them). This isn't just about physical presence. Scholars like al-Zamakhshari and al-Razi highlight two profound meanings this wording conveys: Firstly, it illustrates the messengers' comprehensive and relentless effort. They approached their people from every possible angle, using every argument and strategy, much like the devil's promise to come from all directions to mislead humanity. Secondly, this phrase can signify the full scope of their warning. They warned of Allah's punishments that befell previous nations ("from before them") and the impending torment of the Hereafter ("from behind them"). Another interpretation suggests that these messengers called to belief in all prophets, those who came before them and those who would come after, encompassing a universal message.

The Core Message

The essence of their call was "أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ" (that you worship none but Allah). The Arabic particle "أن" (an) here, as explained by al-Zamakhshari and al-Razi, can be understood as clarifying the message itself: "the core of our discourse to you is that you worship none but Allah." This concise phrasing emphasizes the singular, fundamental truth at the heart of every divine message.

The Disbelievers' Shallow Rejection

Despite such efforts and a clear message, the response of 'Ad and Thamud was one of deep-seated skepticism and arrogance: "لَوْ شَآءَ رَبُّنَا لَأَنزَلَ مَلَٰٓئِكَةًۭ" (If our Lord willed, He would have sent down angels). Ibn Ashur notes a significant omission in their statement, which reveals their flawed logic. The implied meaning is, "If our Lord willed *to send messengers to us*, He would have sent down angels." They believed that if Allah intended to guide them, He would send majestic, non-human beings, not mere mortals like themselves. This reveals a limited understanding of Allah's wisdom in choosing human messengers.

Their final declaration, "فَإِنَّا بِمَآ أُرْسِلْتُم بِهِۦ كَٰفِرُونَ" (Then indeed, we are disbelievers in that with which you have been sent), further exposes their contempt. Al-Zamakhshari and al-Razi explain that this wasn't an admission that the messengers were truly sent by God. Instead, it was a sarcastic mimicking of the messengers' own claim, used to mock them and dismiss their message entirely. It was a rejection not just of the message, but of the very idea that these human beings could be divine envoys. This carefully chosen wording lays bare their deep-seated arrogance and denial.
