Meaning and reflection
Wording
This verse, a direct command to the Prophet Muhammad, offers a profound reflection on Allah's wisdom in choosing His messengers. It responds to the disbelievers' objection that a human could not be a prophet. Allah instructs the Prophet to tell them: "Say, 'If there were on Earth angels walking peacefully, We would have sent down to them from the sky an angel as a messenger.'"
The Wisdom of Shared Nature
The opening command, "Qul" (Say), signals a decisive answer from Allah through His Messenger. The core of the argument lies in the specific description of the hypothetical angels: "مَلَٰٓئِكَةٌۭ يَمْشُونَ مُطْمَئِنِّينَ" (angels walking peacefully, settled). As scholars like al-Zamakhshari and Ibn Ashur explain, the words "يمشون" (walking) emphasize that these angels would be moving on foot, much like humans do, rather than flying. The added word "مطمئنين" (settled, at ease) further clarifies that they would be resident inhabitants of the Earth, tranquil and established, not merely passing through or descending for a brief visit.
Why Specific Words Matter
This precise wording is crucial. If angels were to permanently dwell on Earth, walking and living settled lives like humans, then it would be logical for Allah to send them a messenger from their own kind, an angel, from the heavens. This highlights a fundamental principle: a messenger must be of the same nature as the people they are sent to.
Al-Razi underscores this by noting that "kind to kind is more inclined," meaning that a messenger from the same species allows for familiarity, understanding, and relatable guidance. Imagine trying to learn from someone who lives in an entirely different reality, with different needs, struggles, and ways of life; it would be nearly impossible to truly connect.
Allah's Perfect Choice
Therefore, since the inhabitants of the Earth are human beings, Allah's immense wisdom dictates that their messenger also be a human. A human prophet can share their experiences, understand their challenges, and provide practical guidance in a way that an angel, in its true form, could not. The specific words used in this verse eloquently convey that Allah always chooses what is most suitable and beneficial for His creation, ensuring that His message reaches the heart through a relatable guide.
