At a glance
Sincerity (al-ikhlās) is the pure essence of faith and the very core of every prophetic message. In the language of the Quran, to make something purely for Allah means stripping it of every trace of self-promotion, worldly gain, or desire for the admiration of people. It is the silent movement of the heart that distinguishes true worship from hollow habit or hidden idolatry.
Without sincerity, even the grandest good deed collapses into nothingness. The Quran makes clear that Allah accepts only what is done purely for His sake and in accordance with the prophetic guidance. Actions may look identical on the outside, yet their worth with Allah hinges entirely on what lies hidden within the chest.
Living with sincerity protects you from the snares of Satan, grants peace and stability in difficult times, and transforms ordinary daily acts into enduring provisions for the eternal life to come.
Key verses

- Maryam 19:51: Allah honors Musa by describing him as one chosen and purified, demonstrating how sincere devotion elevates a servant to divine selection.

Status and degrees of sincerity
From the paper: «منزلة الإخلاص ودرجاته»
Sincerity is among the most essential acts of the heart and the very foundation of faith. In the Quran, inner states take precedence over outer limb movements, because intent is what separates faith from disbelief Al-Bayyinah 98:5. Two people may perform the exact same physical prostration, yet one is accepted as a believer and the other falls into idolatry based entirely on their inner purpose. As al-Fudayl ibn Iyad noted on Al-Mulk 67:2, deeds are accepted only when they are both sincere (done purely for Allah) and correct (following the prophetic Sunnah). Sincerity also grants precedence in religion, as emphasized in Az-Zumar 39:2, Az-Zumar 39:3, and Az-Zumar 39:14.
Ibn al-Qayyim outlines three ascending degrees of sincerity:
- First, cleansing the deed from viewing one's own effort, not seeking worldly compensation or praise, and avoiding self-satisfaction by recognizing Allah's grace and personal shortcomings At-Takwir 81:29, An-Nur 24:21.
- Second, feeling awe and modest shame before Allah despite putting forth maximum effort, realizing that one's devotion is only made possible through divine granting of success Al-Mu'minun 23:60.
- Third, allowing the deed to follow divine sacred guidance while freeing oneself from self-reliance, witnessing that human will has no power except through Allah's will At-Takwir 81:28-29, Al-Insan 76:29-30.

Forms of sincerity
From the paper: «صور الإخلاص»
The Quran illustrates sincerity across many dimensions of a believer's spiritual and practical life:
- Devotion and Belief: Submitting entirely to Allah alone An-Nisa 4:125, standing firm upon pure faith until death Fussilat 41:30-31, and freeing theological belief from any rival claims Al-Baqarah 2:139, Al-Kahf 18:110.
- Worship and Rites: Dedicating every act of prayer, slaughter, and living entirely to Allah without partnership Az-Zumar 39:2, Az-Zumar 39:11, Az-Zumar 39:14, Al-An'am 6:162-163.
- Supplication: Calling upon Allah with pure motives, free of showing off, whether in hardship or ease Al-A'raf 7:29, Ghafir 40:14.
- Knowledge and Calling: Conveying truth purely for Allah's sake without craving popularity, wealth, or leadership, following the models of Musa Maryam 19:51 and Dawood and Sulayman An-Naml 27:15.
- Encouraging Good: Rectifying society and mediating disputes purely for divine reward rather than personal standing Ali 'Imran 3:104, An-Nisa 4:114.

Means of achieving sincerity
From the paper: «وسائل تحقيق الإخلاص»
Attaining sincerity requires active striving and specific spiritual means highlighted in the Quran:
- Venerating Allah: Recognizing His majesty, pondering the vastness of His creation, the heavens, and His Footstool (Kursi), which humbles all creation Al-Hajj 22:32, Az-Zumar 39:67, Nuh 71:13-21, Al-Baqarah 2:255, Al-Haqqah 69:25-33.
- Earnest Supplication: Beseeching Allah for help, as exemplified by Zakariyya Al-Anbiya 21:90, and recalling how helpless humans naturally turn to pure sincerity during ocean tempests Luqman 31:32, Yunus 10:22, Az-Zumar 39:2.
- Opposing Whims: Restraining the ego from base desires and social approval, as unchecked whim blinds the intellect and ruins sound judgment Sad 38:26, Al-Qasas 28:50, Al-Jathiyah 45:23, Ash-Shura 42:15, An-Nazi'at 79:40-41, Al-Kahf 18:28.
- Hidden Worship: Performing prayers, charity, and fasts away from human eyes, where no motive remains except Allah Al-Bayyinah 98:5, At-Tawbah 9:31.
- Resisting Satanic Schemes: Recognizing the devil's tactics, such as whisperings, inducing forgetfulness, sowing discord, and threatening poverty, and actively countering them through seeking divine refuge, recitation, and humble prostration Al-A'raf 7:14-17, Ta-Ha 20:120, Al-An'am 6:68, Al-Ma'idah 5:91, Al-Baqarah 2:268, Ali 'Imran 3:175, Al-Baqarah 2:168-169, An-Nahl 16:98.
«تعتبر مخالفة الهوى وسيلة من وسائل تحقيق الإخلاص، والمتأمل في كتاب ربنا يجد أن الله سبحانه وتعالى لم يذكر الهوى إلا مذمومًا، فاتباع الهوى سبيل المضلين، ومخالفة الهوى درب المخلصين.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Fruits of sincerity
From the paper: «ثمرات الإخلاص»
Sincerity yields rich blessings both in this world and in the Hereafter:
- Earthly Fruits: Allah accepts the deed and honors the doer An-Nisa 4:125. Sincerity even remedies human error in charity, as cited in prophetic tradition, and invites divine aid, tranquility, and triumph Az-Zumar 39:36, Al-Anfal 8:70, Al-Fath 48:18, An-Nisa 4:146. It brings relief from calamity, since Allah rescues even the idolatrous when they briefly become sincere during maritime distress Luqman 31:32, At-Tawbah 9:109. It also brings strength, security, and guidance on earth An-Nur 24:55, Al-Ankabut 29:69, An-Nisa 4:134.
- Afterlife Fruits: Sincere believers are saved from the punishment of the Fire Al-Layl 92:17-21, Al-A'raf 7:165, Az-Zumar 39:61, Al-A'raf 7:35. They are granted the highest levels of Paradise and perpetual gardens of Eden Ta-Ha 20:75-76, having purified themselves exclusively for their Lord.
«وعلى قدر إخلاص المرء لربه، وتجرده له، يكون مدد الله تعالى وعونه وكفايته وولايته، وإن الإمداد على قدر الاستعداد، إمداد الله بالنصر والتأييد، أو بالتوفيق والتسديد، على حسب ما في القلوب من تجريد النية.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Takeaways
Check Your Inner Motive Before Every Deed
External correctness is only half of worship; ensure your intent is purely to please Allah and not to impress others Al-Mulk 67:2.
Cultivate Secret Deeds of Worship
Protect your sincerity by keeping certain prayers, charities, and acts of remembrance hidden from all human eyes Al-Bayyinah 98:5.
Acknowledge Allah's Favor in Your Obedience
Never become proud of your good works; remember that any obedience you carry out is entirely due to Allah's guidance and mercy An-Nur 24:21.
Resist the Urge for Worldly Recognition
When teaching, inviting to good, or serving others, discard the craving for social praise, leadership, or reputation An-Nisa 4:114.
Turn Fully to Allah in Moments of Crisis
Just as travelers cry out purely to Allah during stormy seas, keep your supplications utterly sincere at all times Luqman 31:32.
Reflect
- When you do a good deed, how much does the praise or silence of other people affect your motivation?
- Do you have private acts of devotion that no one knows about except Allah?
- When an act of obedience goes well, do you attribute the success to your own discipline or to Allah's grace?

Technical meaning
Purifying one's action from observing created beings, intending Allah alone in worship, and seeking access to His eternal honor without associating any prophet or angel with Him.

How it differs from related terms
- النية Intention
- Intention refers broadly to the heart's resolve and purpose toward an action, whether good or bad, whereas sincerity is narrower and applies exclusively to good, righteous purposes intended purely for Allah.
- القصد Aim or Purpose
- Aim denotes the will and direction of the speaker or actor toward an outcome, while sincerity is the specific purification of that will so that it seeks only the pleasure of the Creator.
- الرياء Ostentation or Showing Off
- Ostentation is the direct practical opposite of sincerity; it involves performing deeds outwardly for Allah while inwardly seeking the praise, status, and approval of people.
- الشرك Association of Partners
- Associating partners is the ultimate theological opposite of sincerity; it entails directing worship, supplication, or exclusive divine rights to other entities alongside Allah.
