At a glance

In the Quran, the face is far more than physical features. It is the mirror of the human soul, expressing what lies deep within the heart. Joy, reverence, arrogance, and despair all show themselves upon the face before a single word is spoken. The Quran uses the face to illustrate the spiritual journey of humanity, contrasting the radiant countenances of the faithful with the darkened expressions of those who turn away.

At the same time, the face represents our highest spiritual focus. Believers are commanded to direct their whole being toward Allah, seeking nothing other than His noble Face through their deeds and worship. In the hereafter, the ultimate reward for the believers is looking upon the Face of their Lord, while the ultimate punishment of the wicked is being veiled from Him.

Understanding the Quranic concept of the face calls you to examine both your inner intentions and your outer state, cultivating sincere devotion and beautiful character so that your face is illuminated with light and gladness on the Day of Reckoning.

Key verses

  1. Ali 'Imran 3:106-107: This passage describes the ultimate separation on the Day of Resurrection, when the faces of the believers will turn radiant white with joy while the faces of the disbelievers become black with disgrace.
  2. Al-Qiyamah 75:22: This verse portrays the radiant beauty of the believers' faces in the hereafter as they experience the greatest bliss of gazing upon their Lord.
  3. Ar-Rahman 55:27: This verse affirms that while everything in creation is subject to passing away, only the noble and majestic Face of Allah will remain eternally.

Affirming the face of Allah Almighty

From the paper: «

The Quran and prophetic tradition affirm that Allah possesses the attribute of the Face (al-Wajh) in a manner that befits His divine majesty and perfection. Allah mentions His noble Face in fourteen places in the Quran, affirming that while everything in creation must perish, His majestic Face remains forever Al-Qasas 28:88 Ar-Rahman 55:27. The faithful are described as bearing trials and spending their wealth seeking solely His Face Al-Baqarah 2:272 Ar-Ra'd 13:22.

Sunni scholarship affirms this divine attribute as it is revealed, without denying it, without likening it to creation, and without delving into its precise reality or manner. Misguided groups fell into extremes: the deniers stripped Allah of His attributes under the claim of avoiding anthropomorphism, while the likeners falsely compared Him to creation. Ahl al-Sunnah hold that meanings are understood from language, but the divine reality is beyond human imagination.

The paper emphasizes that the believers will be blessed with gazing upon the Face of their Lord in the hereafter, as explicitly stated in the Quran Al-Qiyamah 75:22-23. In contrast, those who disbelieved will be veiled from seeing Him in divine wrath Al-Mutaffifin 83:15. As scholars noted, if believers were also veiled, there would be no distinction between the saved and the condemned. Looking upon Allah's noble Face is the highest, most treasured joy of Paradise.

«وقد كان إثبات الإمام البيهقي لهذه الصفة إثباتًا حقيقيًا، على وجه يليق بجلال الله وعظمته، وكانت أدلته لإثبات هذه الصفة شرعية بحتة، نظرًا لكونها من الصفات التي لا تثبت إلا بالسمع، فأورد كثيرًا من الآيات والأحاديث الناطقة صراحة بإثباتها .»

Types of faces and their characteristics

From the paper: «

The human face functions as an open book, translating the hidden states, thoughts, and emotions of the heart into visible expressions. The Quran vividly describes two distinct types of faces based on human destiny.

The faces of the people of happiness radiate joyful composure:

  • They are radiant and laughing, illuminated with glad tidings and peace Abasa 80:38-39.
  • They turn brilliantly white with delight and grace upon seeing the mercy of Allah Ali 'Imran 3:106-107.
  • They are fresh and glowing with vitality (nadirah), reflecting the soul's delight upon looking at their Lord Al-Qiyamah 75:22 Al-Mutaffifin 83:24.
  • They appear gentle and joyful (na'imah), entirely satisfied with their righteous striving Al-Ghashiyah 88:8.
  • Even in this world, a face can express humble longing, as when the Prophet turned his face toward the sky, seeking Allah's guidance with supreme reverence Al-Baqarah 2:144.

In stark contrast, the faces of the people of misery reveal their internal ruin:

  • They become blackened with shame, disgrace, and falsehood Ali 'Imran 3:106 Az-Zumar 39:60.
  • They are gloomy, grim, and despondent (basirah), overwhelmed by despair Al-Qiyamah 75:24.
  • They are humiliated and exhausted (khashi'ah), worn down by labor that brought only ruin because it was not done for Allah Al-Ghashiyah 88:2-3.
  • They show visible hatred and hostility whenever divine truth is recited before them Al-Hajj 22:72.
«إن الوجه هو المرآة التي تعكس ما يختلج في النفس البشرية من أفكار وما يعتري الإنسان من عواطف، فتنعكس ابيضاضًا أو اسودادًا على صفحة الوجه.»

Reasons for the whitening and blackening of faces

From the paper: «

The whitening and blackening described in the Quran has both a physical reality in the hereafter and a spiritual reality in this world Ali 'Imran 3:106-107. On the Day of Judgment, faces physically brighten with pure light when believers read their scrolls of good deeds, while the faces of disbelievers turn dark upon seeing their sins.

In this life, whiteness and blackness are spiritual and moral. Natural skin tones are a sign of Allah's wisdom and environmental adaptation, carrying no moral blame. Spiritual brightness comes from a pure heart and righteous actions:

Conversely, spiritual darkness creeps over the countenance through destructive inner flaws:

«أما ابيضاض الوجوه في الدنيا فمعنوي - كما تقدم - ويظهر على شكل بشرٍ في الوجوه وقبولٍ، حتى وان كانت البشرة سوداء فالسواد في الدنيا ليس مذمة بل يكون أحيانًا نعمة ينعمها الله على الإنسان، حيث يحميه من قسوة البيئة وحرارة الشمس.»

Rulings related to the face

From the paper: «

Because the face is humanity's most noble feature and represents the entire self, Islamic law attaches crucial acts of worship directly to it.

First, the human face is an exquisite divine gift, created in the most balanced and beautiful form Al-Infitar 82:7-8 At-Tin 95:4. The Prophet encouraged meeting fellow believers with a cheerful countenance and smiling warmly, treating it as an act of charity.

Second, sincerity in religion is expressed by setting one's face upright toward Allah Ar-Rum 30:30. The face is singled out because when the face directs itself toward an objective, the body and heart naturally follow in total devotion Al-Anbiya 21:25.

Third, ritual purification requires washing the face in minor ablution (wudu') or wiping it in dry ablution (tayammum) before prayer Al-Ma'idah 5:6. Scholars agree that the face is bounded lengthways from the hairline to the chin, and widthways from ear to ear, though jurists differed on whether the inner nose and mouth form part of the obligatory washed area.

Fourth, turning one's face toward the Sacred Mosque in Mecca is an essential condition for valid prayer Al-Baqarah 2:144. In this command, directing the face is a metonymy for directing one's entire being toward Allah's chosen sanctuary.

Fifth, prostration (sujud) is the pinnacle of prayer, where you place your most honored feature on the earth in utter humility before your Creator. This physical submission produces a radiant mark and noble dignity on the faces of sincere worshippers Al-Fath 48:29.

Seeking the face of Allah through righteous deeds

From the paper: «

The primary purpose of human creation is worshipping Allah alone Adh-Dhariyat 51:56. The Quran specifies key righteous deeds through which the believer seeks nothing other than the noble Face of Allah:

  • Patient forbearance, pardoning offenses, and swallowing anger for Allah's sake Ali 'Imran 3:134.
  • Giving relatives, the needy, and wayfarers their due rights, whether one possesses abundance or endures hardship Ar-Rum 30:38.
  • Paying the obligatory alms and giving voluntary charity purely for Allah, which multiplies rewards like a bountiful garden Al-Baqarah 2:265 An-Nisa 4:114 Ar-Rum 30:39.
  • Feeding the poor, the orphan, and the captive with genuine compassion, seeking neither compensation nor gratitude from people Al-Insan 76:8-9.
  • Greeting one's family with warmth and gladness, guarding them from spiritual ruin At-Tahrim 66:6.

The Quran also establishes duties toward those who sincerely seek Allah's Face. Believers are commanded never to turn away from them or dismiss them on account of their poverty Al-An'am 6:52. Instead, you are instructed to patiently keep company with them morning and evening, finding strength in their sincere companionship Al-Kahf 18:28.

Finally, the Quran employs the face in a vivid parable: a person stumbling blind and fallen upon their face represents the lost disbeliever, whereas one walking upright along a straight path represents the guided believer Al-Mulk 67:22 Al-Ankabut 29:43. This disparity begins in this world and becomes completely manifest on the Day of Resurrection.

«فهؤلاء قد ابتغوا وجه الله بتجرد ومحبة وأدب لذا حثنا الله على مجالستهم وعدم طردهم لما فيه من تفويت المصلحة للإسلام والمسلمين.»

Bliss and punishment of faces in the hereafter

From the paper: «

In the hereafter, the full reality of a soul's deeds will be unmistakably displayed upon the face, bringing eternal delight or terrible punishment.

For the righteous, their faces will experience complete bliss:

  • Brightness and laughter, shining brightly with the light of sincere faith Abasa 80:38-39.
  • Pure whiteness, reflecting profound joy at their deeds and immersing them in divine mercy Ali 'Imran 3:106-107.
  • Radiant beauty (nadrah), glowing with the unmistakable delight of Paradise Al-Qiyamah 75:22 Al-Mutaffifin 83:24.
  • Placid softness and satisfaction (na'imah), enjoying deep spiritual contentment as they reap the reward of their earthly strivings Al-Ghashiyah 88:8.

For the wicked, their faces will endure severe humiliation and physical torment:

  • Deep blackness, mirroring the disgrace, shame, and exposure of their inner lies Az-Zumar 39:60.
  • Severe scowling and distress (basirah), overwhelmed by utter gloom because no escape remains Al-Qiyamah 75:24.
  • Abject humiliation and fatigue (khashi'ah), exhausted from laboring in life for things other than Allah, only to find loss and weariness Al-Ghashiyah 88:2-3.
  • Heavy dust covered by pitch-black smoke (qatarah), combining darkness with grim grime, which matches their combination of disbelief and corruption during their earthly lives Abasa 80:40-41.

Takeaways

  1. Purify your inner intention in every good deed

Good actions are accepted only when done purely for the Face of Allah. Rid your heart of ostentation and the desire for human praise, remembering that charity given for display loses all reward Al-Baqarah 2:264.

  2. Bring joy and cheer to your family and community

Meeting others with a warm, cheerful countenance is a righteous act praised by the Prophet. Smiling at your brother and showing kindness to your household are practical ways to embody faith At-Tahrim 66:6.

  3. Seek out sincere companions and stay close to them

Allah commanded His Prophet to be patient in the company of those who remember Him day and night Al-Kahf 18:28. Surround yourself with people whose primary goal is pleasing Allah, regardless of their worldly wealth.

  4. Humble yourself completely during prostration

In prayer, you place your most honored physical feature upon the ground before your Lord. This sincere humbleness leaves a lasting mark of dignity, inner tranquility, and divine light upon your face Al-Fath 48:29.

  5. Root out arrogance before it tarnishes your soul

Pride and self-admiration produce spiritual darkness that eventually surfaces on your countenance. Cultivate truthfulness, honesty, and humility so that your record brings gladness in the hereafter Az-Zumar 39:60.

Reflect

  • When you interact with people throughout your day, what does your facial expression convey about what is inside your heart?
  • Think of a recent good deed you performed: did you do it seeking solely the Face of Allah, or was part of you hoping for recognition?
  • How can you make your daily prostrations more intentional, feeling the true humility of placing your face upon the earth before Allah?
  • Who are the sincere people in your life who constantly seek Allah, and how can you spend more time in their company?

Linguistic meaning

Linguistically, the root letters (w-j-h) point to encountering or meeting something. The face is the front part of anything that confronts and greets others, and it is sometimes used figuratively to mean the essence of a thing or high social honor and dignity.

Technical meaning

In Islamic jurisprudence, the human face is defined by classical scholars as the area extending vertically from the normal hairline down to the chin and the end of the jawbones, and horizontally from ear to ear.

How it differs from related terms

الذات the essence or self
The essence (al-dhat) denotes the complete reality of a thing that distinguishes it from everything else. The face (al-wajh) is the most prominent and noble part of that essence, and the word 'face' is frequently used in Arabic and the Quran to express the entire self through metonymy.
الظهر the back
The back (al-zahr) signifies strength and prominent elevation, extending from behind the shoulders down to the lower spine. It represents the physical opposite side of the face on the very same body.
الدبر the rear
The rear (al-dubur) refers to the hindmost end or back part of something, standing in direct contrast to facing forward (al-iqbal). Unlike the back, which is strictly a bodily region, the rear is the directional opposite of an encounter and does not necessarily refer to the same body.
