Meaning and reflection
Wording
The previous verses set a powerful tone with Allah's solemn oaths by the fig and the olive, Mount Sinai, and the secure city of Makkah. These oaths serve to highlight the tremendous truth about to be revealed in this verse, underscoring its immense importance and inviting us to ponder it deeply.
The Human Being's Exquisite Creation
Allah declares, "لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِىٓ أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍۢ" (Indeed, We created the human being in the best of forms). The word "الْإِنسَٰنَ" (al-Insan) here refers to the entire human species, all of mankind. The core of this verse lies in understanding "أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ" (ahsani taqwim). The root of "تقويم" (taqwim) means to set something straight, to make it balanced, proportionate, and perfect.
Scholars have reflected on "best of forms" in two profound ways. Firstly, it refers to our outward, physical creation. Unlike most animals, humans stand upright, have hands capable of intricate work, and possess a beautiful, harmonious physical appearance. Al-Razi noted that every other living creature is created face-down, whereas humanity stands tall, able to use their hands to eat. This unique physical posture and capability are a clear sign of Allah's meticulous design.
Beyond the Physical: The Inner Perfection
More profoundly, "أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ" also points to our inner, spiritual, and intellectual formation. Ibn Ashur emphasizes that this "taqwim" is primarily about the rectification of our intellect, understanding, and sound rational thought. It means we are created with an innate, pure disposition, known as *fitra*, which inclines us naturally towards recognizing Allah's Oneness, truth, justice, and all that is good. This makes us distinct and capable of great moral and intellectual achievements. The human body, in this view, serves as an instrument for this noble intellect.
The preposition "فِي" (fi), meaning "in" or "within," used in "فِي أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ" is particularly significant. It's not merely "with" or "by," but suggests a deep, intrinsic embedding. It implies that this excellent formation isn't just an external attribute we possess; it is deeply woven into the very fabric of our being, making it an inseparable part of who we are. It means we are established within this perfection from our very creation.
A Foundation for Reflection
This powerful wording establishes that humanity's original state is one of incredible potential and inherent goodness. We are not born flawed, but rather exquisitely crafted both physically and spiritually, with an innate compass guiding us towards truth. This fundamental truth, affirmed by Allah with such emphasis, invites us to reflect on how we uphold or deviate from this pristine state of "أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ."
