At a glance

In the Quranic worldview, humiliation (الذل dhull) is not a single, uniform state. The Quran uses this concept in two starkly contrasting ways: a praiseworthy, chosen lowering of oneself, and a blameworthy, degrading disgrace. When a servant lowers themselves in awe, devotion, and utter dependence before Allah, that humility becomes the wellspring of true nobility, strength, and ultimate honor.

Conversely, when a person or community rebels against Allah, worships false idols, follows fleeting whims, or displays arrogance, Allah punishes them with the bitter taste of blameworthy humiliation. This disgrace can strike in this earthly life through anxiety, loss, and subjugation, or manifest in the hereafter through total exposure and terrifying punishment.

Understanding humiliation in the Quran clarifies where real honor resides. Honor is never found in worldly power, wealth, or chasing prestige away from Allah's guidance. It is found solely through submission to the Creator, gentle compassion toward fellow believers, dutiful respect to parents, and steadfast commitment to faith.

Key verses

  1. Al-Munafiqun 63:8: Exposes the arrogance of hypocrites who claim worldly superiority, declaring that all true honor belongs exclusively to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers.
  2. Ali 'Imran 3:123: Highlights how Allah granted the early believers victory at the Battle of Badr when they were humble, few in number, and physically vulnerable.
  3. Al-Ma'idah 5:54: Describes true believers who are loved by Allah as deeply gentle, humble, and compassionate toward fellow believers while standing firm and dignified against disbelievers.

Types of humiliation

From the paper: «

The Quran distinguishes between two categories of humiliation:

  • Praiseworthy Humiliation: This is a noble yielding of the heart. Its highest expression is total servitude before Allah Adh-Dhariyat 51:56, which scholars like Ibn al-Qayyim and al-Dhahabi describe as the union of utmost love with utmost submission. It also manifests as tender obedience and kindness toward parents Al-Isra 17:24, paired in scripture with pure monotheism An-Nisa 4:36, Al-Baqarah 2:83. Among believers, it takes the form of warm compassion, gentleness, and mercy, rather than weakness Al-Ma'idah 5:54.
  • Blameworthy Humiliation: This occurs when a person bows to created things instead of the Creator. It arises from deifying personal desires Al-Jathiyah 45:23 or worshipping helpless, manufactured idols Al-Furqan 25:1, Al-Furqan 25:3. It is also seen in forced subservience to tyrannical rulers, such as the degradation Pharaoh inflicted upon the Israelites by slaughtering their sons and sparing their women Ghafir 40:26, Al-Qasas 28:4. Finally, it appears in yielding to Satan's whispers, which causes moral slips and devastating losses, just as occurred to some believers during the Battle of Uhud Ali 'Imran 3:155.
«ينقسم الذل إلى نوعين من جهة أنه محمود ومذموم، ولقد ذكر القرآن الكريم كلا القسمين، فمن أشرف أنواع الذل المحمود الذي يكون مع الخالق عز وجل ثم مع الوالدين ثم مع المؤمنين، وفي المقابل الذل المذموم الذي يكون مع ما يعبد من دونه عز وجل، أو مع الحكام المستبدين، أو مع الشيطان.»

Punishment through humiliation

From the paper: «

Humiliation serves as a devastating divine penalty for persistent sin and disbelief:

  • In This World: Those who turn away from Allah's guidance face an anxious, constricted life devoid of peace Ta-Ha 20:124. Defiant enemies of truth experience terror, defeat, and captivity, as cast upon hostile tribes. Arrogant transgressors may also suffer physical destruction, exemplified by Qarun being swallowed up by the earth alongside his boastful wealth Al-Qasas 28:81.
«أي: فإن لهذا المعرض معيشة ضيقة مليئة بالهم والغم والأحزان وسوء العاقبة، حتى ولو ملك المال الوفير، والحطام الكثير..»

Causes of falling into humiliation

From the paper: «

Falling into disgrace is never accidental; it is the natural harvest of specific human choices:

  • Idolatry and Religious Inventions: Associating partners with Allah An-Nisa 4:116 or inventing false doctrines brings divine anger and lasting lowliness Al-A'raf 7:152, Al-Baqarah 2:61, Ali 'Imran 3:112. Scholars like al-Shatibi noted that innovators inevitably carry an inner badge of disgrace.
  • Arrogance Against Obedience: Pride was Iblis's original sin when he refused to prostrate, earning expulsion as one of the abased An-Nahl 16:23, Al-A'raf 7:13.
  • Abandoning Striving: Shirking struggle and obsessing over temporary worldly comforts allows enemies to subjugate a people, as highlighted in prophetic teachings Al-Baqarah 2:96, An-Nisa 4:139.
«فالذل والصغار واقع بهم، كما ذل الذين من قبلهم من كفار الأمم الماضية بسبب ما وقع منهم من معاندة ومعاداة لشرع الله عز وجل.»

Causes of lifting humiliation

From the paper: «

The Quran and prophetic teachings outline clear spiritual paths to remove humiliation and reclaim honorable standing:

  • Faith and Consistent Righteous Deeds: Those who do good are spared all disgrace, gloom, and darkness on the Day of Judgment, entering Paradise with joy and radiant faces Yunus 10:26, Al-Insan 76:11.
  • Pride in Islam and Adherence to Divine Law: Real dignity comes only from Allah's religion. Umar ibn al-Khattab famously observed that Muslims were once the lowest of peoples, yet Allah honored them through Islam, and seeking honor elsewhere brings humiliation. The Quran reminds believers how Islam rescued them from division, poverty, and vulnerability Ali 'Imran 3:103.
  • Supplication for Honor: Turning directly to Allah for protection, as the Prophet did when seeking refuge from poverty, scarcity, and humiliation.
  • Loyalty to Allah, His Messenger, and Believers: Worldly groups often boast of dominance, but ultimate might belongs exclusively to Allah, His Messenger, and the faithful Al-Munafiqun 63:8.
  • Obedience to Divine Guidance: Submitting to prophetic leadership preserves communal strength, whereas defiance leads to failure, defeat, and enduring regret An-Nisa 4:59.

Takeaways

  1. Humility Before Allah Is the Source of Honor

Lowering yourself in prayer, repentance, and utter dependence before your Creator is not degradation; it is the highest form of nobility and the quickest doorway to divine support.

  2. Seeking Dignity Elsewhere Brings Disgrace

Whenever an individual or a community compromises their faith to impress worldly powers or pursue fleeting trends, they end up degraded by the very things they chased.

  3. Gentleness With Believers Is Strength, Not Weakness

Treating your fellow Muslims with warmth, patience, and yielding compassion reflects spiritual maturity and is a defining quality of those whom Allah loves.

  4. Unchecked Desires Lead to Degradation

Surrendering to every personal whim turns desires into false masters, clouding moral judgment and ultimately causing internal anxiety and outward ruin.

Reflect

  • In what areas of your daily routine do you struggle most to surrender your personal desires to Allah's guidance?
  • How can you actively soften your manner and lower the wing of humility toward your parents and fellow believers this week?
  • When facing social pressure, do you seek dignity through compromise, or do you find your sense of honor anchored firmly in Islam?

Linguistic meaning

The Arabic root indicates submission, compliance, softness, and docility. Al-dhull denotes that which occurs through subjugation or force, whereas al-dhill signifies softness and ease without coercion, as when an animal becomes trained and easy to lead.

Technical meaning

Ibn Ashur defines it as an internal submission and helpless yielding caused by an inability to resist or repel harm. Al-Askari adds that it reflects weakness against opposition, standing in direct contrast to might, which is the capacity to overcome.

How it differs from related terms

Resigned degradation
While general humiliation can be resisted inwardly, al-saghar represents an added level of lowliness where the humiliated party openly acknowledges, accepts, and submits to their subjugation and mistreatment.
Disgraceful scandal
Unlike simple humiliation, al-khizy is disgrace fused with public exposure, scandal, and intense shame resulting from the ugly nature of one's misdeeds.
Outward deference
Al-khudu' refers specifically to physical lowering and outward compliance, such as bowing the neck or lowering the head before an authority, whereas humiliation is a broader state of inner defeat or compelled obedience.
