At a glance

Reverence, or الخشوع khushu', is the tender submission of the human heart before the majesty of its Creator. It is an inner stillness born of deep awe, certainty of the meeting with Allah, and conscious awareness of His watchful presence. Far from an empty display of physical composure, true reverence begins deep within the chest, softening the heart and naturally stilling the limbs in surrender.

In the Quran, reverence appears as the heartbeat of living faith. It distinguishes genuine worshipers, unlocks the sweetness of prayer, and shelters believers from the compulsory humiliation that awaits those who turn away in arrogance. From the attentive listening of the righteous to the quiet awe of inanimate creation, the Quran depicts reverence as a transformative state of being that enriches every moment of a believer's life.

Key verses

  1. Al-Isra 17:107-109: The righteous among the people of knowledge fall upon their faces in tears and deep humility upon hearing the Quran, which only increases them in tender reverence.
  2. Al-Baqarah 2:45-46: Patience and prayer are heavy burdens except for the truly reverent, who carry a firm certainty that they will ultimately stand before their Lord.
  3. Al-Mu'minun 23:1-2: True prosperity belongs to the believers who realize inner stillness and devoted humility while standing before Allah in prayer.
  4. Al-Anbiya 21:90: Prophet Zechariah and his household were answered by Allah because they rushed toward good deeds, called upon Him in hope and fear, and remained reverent before Him.
  5. Ta-Ha 20:108: On the Day of Resurrection, all voices will hush in sheer awe before the Most Merciful, leaving nothing audible except a faint whisper.
  6. Al-Hadid 57:16: Believers are gently admonished and urged to soften their hearts in humble reverence to Allah's remembrance and the truth He sent down, rather than turning hard over time.
  7. Al-Ghashiyah 88:2: Faces that refused voluntary submission in the earthly life will be humbled and cast down under the sheer humiliation of punishment in the Hereafter.
  8. Al-Hashr 59:21: Had the majestic words of the Quran descended upon a solid mountain, its sheer stone would have crumbled and humbled itself out of awe before Allah.
  9. Al-Ahzab 33:35: Allah pairs reverent men and women with the foremost ranks of believers, promising them complete forgiveness and an immense reward.
  10. Ash-Shura 42:45: Those who lived in injustice will be presented before the Fire humbled by compulsory disgrace, casting cautious and stealthy glances.
  11. Al-Qalam 68:43: Those who refused the call to prostrate when they were healthy in this life will have their eyes cast down in disgrace, unable to bow on that final Day.

Causes of reverence

From the paper: «

Reverence does not emerge from a void. It flows from clear spiritual wellsprings identified in the Quran:

  • Awe of Allah: Reverence begins with knowing Allah through His majestic names and attributes. A conscious realization that He is with you wherever you are Al-Hadid 57:4 plants modesty, mindful watchfulness, and a profound reverence in the heart. This voluntary awe in the worldly life lightens religious duties such as patience and prayer Al-Baqarah 2:45-46 and distinguishes the faithful Ali 'Imran 3:199, drawing them into deep humility Al-Isra 17:109 and continual devotion Al-Anbiya 21:90, bringing divine forgiveness Al-Ahzab 33:35.
  • Contemplating the Quran: Listening to divine reminders with an open heart melts spiritual hardness. Allah urges believers not to let their hearts stiffen like past nations Al-Hadid 57:16. The righteous fall weeping upon their faces when the scripture is recited, finding their reverence increased Al-Isra 17:107-109. Even massive mountains would crumble in awe if given comprehension of this revelation Al-Hashr 59:21.
  • Pondering the Punishment: Remembering the forced humiliation awaiting the unrepentant provides a sobering urge toward voluntary surrender. In the Hereafter, those who rejected faith are displayed in sheer disgrace Ash-Shura 42:45, their sight lowered in ignominy Al-Qalam 68:43, their hearts trembling and glances cast down An-Nazi'at 79:8-9, and their faces humbled under distress Al-Ghashiyah 88:2-3. Contemplating this pushes the believer to seek genuine closeness through prayer and prostration Al-Alaq 96:19.
«من الأسباب التي تحمل المسلم على الخشوع سماع آيات القرآن بنية صادقة في قلب نقي خالص مخلص لله سبحانه وتدبر آياته للانتفاع بأحكامه وحكمه ومواعظه وعبره.»

Contexts of reverence

From the paper: «

The Quran emphasizes reverence across three primary realms:

  • Reverence in Prayer: Stillness is the beating pulse of prayer, without which worship risks losing its spiritual spirit. True success is promised to those who maintain reverence in their prayer Al-Mu'minun 23:1-2, and it makes the obligation of prayer light rather than burdensome Al-Baqarah 2:45. It appears in fixing one's gaze toward the place of prostration and drawing close to Allah in humble supplication Al-Alaq 96:19. Scholars noted that while basic outward validity may be fulfilled without complete presence, reward and true divine acceptance depend upon what the heart consciously grasped.
  • Reverence at Allah's Remembrance: Remembering Allah and reciting scripture should soften the believer's inner core Al-Hadid 57:16. This state is anchored in firm certainty of meeting Him Al-Baqarah 2:46. When Allah is mentioned, true hearts tremble, and when His verses are recited, their faith surges Al-Anfal 8:2. Their skins shiver at divine warnings and then soften alongside their hearts toward His grace Az-Zumar 39:23.
  • Reverence on the Day of Resurrection: The ultimate scene of reverence arrives on the Last Day. All voices hush before the Most Merciful into quiet murmurs Ta-Ha 20:108. Meanwhile, those who rebelled will face compulsory disgrace, their eyes downcast and faces humbled Ash-Shura 42:44-45, emerging from graves in terrifying humiliation Al-Qamar 54:7, Al-Qalam 68:43, Al-Ma'arij 70:43-44, An-Nazi'at 79:8-9, Al-Ghashiyah 88:1-4.
«الخشوع في الصلاة من أهم الأسباب لحصول الفائدة المرجوة منها، وهو لب الصلاة وقلبها النابض، وبدونه ربما لا يحصل المصلي الأجر كاملًا.»

Reverence of the limbs

From the paper: «

Reverence is fundamentally an internal act of the heart that naturally overflows onto the limbs:

  • The Heart: The heart is the command center of devotion. When it fills with awe, as seen in the prophets who called upon Allah in desire and dread Al-Anbiya 21:89-90 and the believers whose hearts soften to divine counsel Al-Hadid 57:16, Al-Mu'minun 23:1-2, all limbs follow. Early scholars warned against artificial composure, noting that true reverence is not lowering one's neck or wearing rough garments, but inner humility before divine truth. Modern studies also observe that meditative stillness helps regulate heart health, blood pressure, and mental distress.
  • The Faces: The face is a person's noblest outward feature. When the heart bows, the face falls upon the earth in tearful surrender upon hearing revelation Al-Isra 17:107-109, unlike the compulsory humiliation that will mark the faces of the unmindful in the Hereafter Al-Ghashiyah 88:1-4.
  • The Eyes: In prayer, eyes are disciplined by resting upon the place of prostration Al-Mu'minun 23:1-2. This voluntary lowering shields the believer from the terrified, disgraced stare of the disobedient on the Day of Reckoning Al-Qamar 54:6-8, Al-Qalam 68:43, Al-Ma'arij 70:43-44, An-Nazi'at 79:8-9.
  • The Voices: Produced by the tongue, voices fall silent before divine majesty Ta-Ha 20:108. Training one's speech in goodness in this life prepares the soul for that final standing.
«وقال ابن رجب: وأصل الخشوع هو لين القلب ورقته، وسكونه، وخضوعه، وانكساره، وحرقته، فإذا خشع القلب تبعه خشوع جميع الجوارح، والأعضاء؛ لأنها تابعة له، كما قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: (ألا وإنّ في الجسد مضغةً إذا صلحت صلح الجسد كلّه، وإذا فسدت فسد الجسد كلّه، ألا وهي القلب).»

Reverence of creation

From the paper: «

Humility before Allah is not limited to humanity. The entire cosmos shares in submissive praise according to its nature, even if humans do not comprehend their praise Al-Isra 17:44.

  • The Earth: The Quran speaks of the earth as being reverently barren and still Fussilat 41:39. In its drought, it lies low and dry, waiting in humble submission until Allah sends down rain, causing it to stir, swell, and burst forth with life. This cyclical awakening serves as a vivid reminder of the resurrection.
  • The Mountains: In their immense size and rigid rock, mountains stand as monuments of strength. Yet Allah states that if this Quran had been placed upon a mountain, it would have cracked apart and crumbled in utter awe of Him Al-Hashr 59:21. Scholars noted that this comparison serves as a profound admonition to human beings: if solid granite would shatter before the weight of divine speech, how can human hearts remain unmoved and hard when receiving the very same words?
«الخشوع والتذلل لله تعالى ليس مقصورًا على الإنسان وأعضائه، وإنما يعم جميع مخلوقات الله عز وجل فالكل مخلوق لله، إذن فالكل عبيد له سبحانه متذلل له، لكن كل مخلوق له خشوعه الذي يليق به، والذي يتناسب معه، وربما خشع بعض المخلوقات خشوعًا لا يعلمه الإنسان.»

Characteristics of the reverent

From the paper: «

The Quran outlines distinct markers that define those who possess genuine reverence:

  • Certainty of Meeting Allah: Reverent souls live with an unshakable conviction that they will return to their Creator for judgment Al-Baqarah 2:45-46. This certainty tempers desire and anchors their choices, keeping the final account continuously before their eyes Al-Mutaffifin 83:4-5, Al-Haqqah 69:20.
  • Rushing to Good Deeds Between Hope and Fear: Reverence drives purposeful action. The prophets raced toward righteous acts, calling upon Allah with yearning for His mercy and dread of His punishment Al-Anbiya 21:89-90. Believers maintain this balance, as described across scripture, walking between fear and longing Al-A'raf 7:56, comforted by divine forgiveness yet heedful of divine justice Al-Hijr 15:49-50, Ghafir 40:3. This balance shields the soul from both despair and heedlessness, earning immense reward Al-Ahzab 33:35.
  • Seeking Help Through Patience and Prayer: Fulfilling religious duties can feel heavy upon the ego, but it becomes light for the reverent Al-Baqarah 2:45. Their humility breaks self-delusion, enabling them to lean upon steadfast patience and regular prayer Al-Baqarah 2:153. Patience subdues base desires, while prayer connects the servant directly to divine strength and lasting peace.
«والمراد بالخاشع هنا: الذي ذلل نفسه وكسر سورتها، وعودها أن تطمئن إلى أمر الله، وتطلب حسن العواقب، وأن لا تغتر بما تزينه الشهوة الحاضرة.»

Effects of reverence and the reward of the reverent

From the paper: «

Cultivating reverence transforms a believer's inner world and shapes their eternal destiny through profound blessings:

  • Prosperity and Divine Praise: Reverence unlocks ultimate success in this life and the next Al-Mu'minun 23:1-2. Allah explicitly praises the humble throughout scripture Al-Isra 17:109, Al-Baqarah 2:45, Al-Anbiya 21:90, signaling His profound love for those who surrender to Him.
  • Deepening Certainty and Steadfastness: A reverent heart naturally recognizes truth, breaking pride, vanity, and delusions of self-sufficiency. It fosters unbroken awareness of divine wisdom in daily events and softens the soul toward guidance Az-Zumar 39:23.
  • Forgiveness and Tremendous Reward: Sincere humility cleanses sins and earns lofty divine favor Ali 'Imran 3:199, Al-Ahzab 33:35. Paraphrasing a prophetic teaching, taking careful ablution and praying two units of prayer without self-distraction grants forgiveness for past mistakes.
  • Answered Prayers and Paradise: Humble entreaty was the vehicle through which prophets received relief in distress Al-Anbiya 21:89-90. Moreover, weeping out of awe of Allah grants shelter under His shade on the Day of Judgment and protects the eye from the touch of the Fire.

Ultimately, reverence is not confined to the prayer rug; it is a continuous lifestyle that deepens one's moral grounding and enriches every act of obedience.

«ولما كان الخشوع صفه يمتدح الله بها عباده المؤمنين، دل على فضله ومكانته عندالله، ودل على حب الله لأهل الخشوع والخضوع؛ لأن الله سبحانه لا يمدح أحدًا بشيء إلا وهو يحبه، ويحب من يتعبده به.»

Takeaways

  1. Nurture the heart first

True composure does not come from lowering your head or stiffening your body; it begins when your heart is softened by remembering Allah, which then naturally quiets your limbs.

  2. Discipline your gaze in prayer

Train your eyes to rest upon the place of your prostration during prayer to shield your thoughts from worldly distractions and build inward stillness.

  3. Balance hope and healthy awe

Draw near to Allah by holding your desire for His mercy and your awe of His justice together, letting them guide your daily choices like the two wings of a bird.

  4. Recite with deliberate reflection

Approach the Quran slowly and thoughtfully, recognizing that its warnings and promises were revealed to soften your soul and move you toward sincere reform.

  5. Lean on prayer during hardship

When life feels overwhelming, turn immediately to patience and prayer; through humble surrender, heavy burdens become light and manageable.

Reflect

  • What usually distracts your heart most when you stand in prayer, and how can you gently clear that space beforehand?
  • When was the last time a verse of the Quran genuinely softened your heart or brought tears to your eyes?
  • How would your daily speech and interactions change if you lived with constant awareness that you will stand before Allah?

How it differs from related terms

Outward compliance
While reverence begins internally within the heart and reflects across the eyes, voice, and limbs, outward compliance (الخضوع) is primarily attributed to physical submissiveness and bodily surrender before an authority.
Earnest pleading
Earnest pleading (التضرع) represents the tender, humbled plea of the heart during moments of distress and fear, serving as the foundational humility that inspires outward reverence upon the limbs.
Sudden tremor of fear
A sudden tremor of fear (الوجل) is an inward anxiety stirred by an unexpected thought or initial awareness of divine majesty, acting as an early emotional spark that leads to enduring reverence and humble stillness.
