At a glance

In the language of the Quran, understanding (الفقه fiqh) is not merely memorizing dry legal rules. It is deep insight, acute comprehension, and grasping the inner core and aims of divine guidance. It represents an alert heart that perceives the reality of situations, weighs actions with wisdom, and pierces through obstacles to arrive at truth.

While shallow perception leads to misjudgment, conflict, and moral confusion, sound understanding brings peace, clarity, and steadfastness. It unites a sincere heart with clear knowledge, allowing a believer to walk the straight path without deviation.

Ultimately, genuine fiqh is a divine gift and an act of grace from Allah. It settles in the heart of the humble seeker who reveres Allah, reflects on revelation and creation, and purifies their life from sin and pride.

Key verses

  1. Al-Isra 17:46: When hearts become hardened by arrogance and persistent denial, Allah places coverings over them and deafness in their ears, stripping them of the ability to comprehend the wisdom and beauty of the Quran.
  2. Al-Isra 17:44: All existence across the heavens and earth glorifies Allah continually, yet human beings fail to comprehend their speech and praise because it lies beyond ordinary human perception.
  3. Ta-Ha 20:27: Prophet Musa prayed for Allah to loosen the impediment in his tongue so that his listeners would truly comprehend his speech and grasp the intended message of his mission.

Understanding as a divine blessing

From the paper: «

Sound understanding is among the greatest blessings Allah grants to His servants. Many everyday conflicts and errors in judgment stem directly from poor comprehension, hasty assumptions, and an unhealthy heart. When Allah blessed Prophet Sulayman with a sharper, more equitable judgment in a legal dispute, He emphasized this special endowment of understanding Al-Anbiya 21:79.

Ibn al-Qayyim observed that sound understanding and pure intention are two indispensable legs upon which Islam stands. Together, they protect a believer from both corrupted motives and flawed misinterpretations. This gift is a divine light cast into the heart, enabling one to distinguish truth from falsehood and right guidance from error. Ali ibn Abi Talib affirmed that the only unique inheritance given to him was the Book of Allah and the understanding granted to a Muslim person.

To cultivate this gift, a person must combine deep awareness of reality with a firm grasp of divine law Al-Mujadilah 58:11, Az-Zumar 39:9. This requires deliberate contemplation, patience before passing judgment, re-examining evidence, and maintaining positive assumptions and a clean heart under the constant consciousness of Allah Al-Isra 17:45-46.

«وصحة الفهم نور يقذفه الله في قلب العبد يميز به بين الصحيح والفاسد، والحق والباطل، والهدى والضلال، والغي والرشاد، ويمده حسن القصد، وتحري الحق، وتقوى الرب في السر والعلانية».»

Attributing understanding to the heart

From the paper: «

The Quran repeatedly assigns the faculty of deep understanding directly to the heart. When people turn away from divine guidance and refuse to reflect, the Quran describes them as possessing hearts that do not comprehend Al-A'raf 7:179. Though they have physical eyes and ears, their spiritual apathy renders them more astray than grazing livestock, because animals still recognize what benefits or harms them.

Scholars note that the heart is the central sovereign of human faculties, while the head and limbs act as its obedient soldiers. When the heart is upright, loving Allah and seeking His pleasure, comprehension becomes sound and all bodily actions follow righteously Ash-Shu'ara 26:88-89. Conversely, hypocrisy, doubt, and spiritual oscillation result in hearts being sealed, blinding people from the essence of faith Al-Munafiqun 63:3.

One of the most elevated domains of understanding is recognizing the majesty, transcendence, and absolute sovereignty of Allah Al-Baqarah 2:255. All seven heavens, the earth, and every single creature praise and glorify Him, yet human beings fail to comprehend their praise Al-Isra 17:44. Allah's forbearance allows humanity time to turn back, reminding seekers to direct their hearts toward eternal spiritual realities rather than getting lost in superficial worldly matters Al-Jinn 72:18, Al-An'am 6:41, Ar-Rum 30:7.

«وقد استدل العلماء بهذه الآية على أن محل العلم هو القلب؛ لأنه تعالى نفى الفقه والفهم عن قلوبهم في معرض الذم، مما يدل على أن محل الفهم والفقه هو القلب.»

The Quran

From the paper: «

The Noble Quran is the foundational source for all true knowledge and understanding, because it is the supreme word of Allah that guides humanity to that which is most upright Al-Isra 17:9. It liberates the human conscience from myths, harmonizes outward actions with inner sincerity, and balances human capacity with religious devotion.

However, a receptive soul is required to absorb this light. When arrogant rejectors listened to the Prophet with closed minds and blind adherence to ancestral traditions, barriers and spiritual coverings were placed over their hearts Al-An'am 6:25, Al-Isra 17:46. Their stubbornness caused them to miss the magnificent eloquence, balance, and guidance of the verses.

Similarly, insincere listeners and hypocrites would slip away whenever revelation exposed their secrets, their hearts turned away because they refused to reflect At-Tawbah 9:127. Those who deliberately turn their backs after being reminded of the signs are described as the most unjust; their persistent disregard locks their hearts in spiritual deafness and prevents them from ever finding guidance Al-Kahf 18:57. Real understanding of the Quran requires opening the heart in humble submission, allowing its words to shape beliefs and inspire righteous deeds.

The words of the messengers

From the paper: «

The words of the prophets represent another essential sphere of understanding, offering profound moral lessons, clear proofs, and complete guidance for life Al-Baqarah 2:285. The Prophet Muhammad was endowed with concise, comprehensive speech (jawami' al-kalim), conveying rich, multilayered meanings in succinct expressions.

Throughout history, the rejection of prophetic words arose from corrupted hearts rather than intellectual weakness. The people of Shu'ayb scoffed at him, declaring that they could not understand much of what he said regarding monotheism and honesty in business Hud 11:91. Their mockery reflected sheer arrogance and contempt toward righteous advice.

Recognizing the vital need for clear communication, Prophet Musa prayed that Allah would untie the knot of his tongue so that Pharaoh's court would fully comprehend his words Ta-Ha 20:27-28, Al-Qasas 28:34, Az-Zukhruf 43:52. Other prophets, such as Nuh and Salih, patiently explained the reality of their mission with compassionate advice, urging their people to repent to an ever-near Lord Al-A'raf 7:61-62, Hud 11:61. When Ibrahim debated the arrogant tyrant Nimrod, he presented undeniable rational arguments that left the denier utterly confounded Al-Baqarah 2:258.

«وهكذا نجد أن في أقوال الرسل مجالا واسعًا للعلم والمعرفة والهداية لأحسن السبل، كما أن فيها العبرة والموعظة الحسنة في جميع مناحي الحياة.»

Cosmic signs

From the paper: «

Pondering the cosmic signs in the universe is a crucial domain of understanding. The Quran calls upon people of intellect to meditate upon the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day Ali 'Imran 3:190. When this passage was revealed, the Prophet wept throughout the night, warning of woe for whoever recites it without deep contemplation.

Allah displays His signs across the horizons and within human biology until the truth becomes self-evident Fussilat 41:53. The Quran highlights the subtle, intricate phases of human development from a single soul, pointing out that such detailed signs are unraveled specifically for people who understand Al-An'am 6:65, Al-An'am 6:98, Nuh 71:15-20, Yunus 10:5.

Natural phenomena, such as the convergence of fresh and salt water separated by an invisible barrier, serve as tangible proofs of divine order and purpose Ar-Rahman 55:19-21. The delicate balance of atmospheric cycles, terrestrial expanses, and celestial architecture proves that reviving humanity after death is effortless for the Creator An-Nazi'at 79:27-33. Understanding the cosmos redirects the soul away from created things and settles it in awe of the ultimate Truth.

Means of acquiring understanding

From the paper: «

Divine laws carry profound wisdom, benefits, and protective rationales. Prayer shields the soul from indecency Al-Ankabut 29:45, fasting nurtures godfearing consciousness Al-Baqarah 2:183, equitable legal retribution preserves human life Al-Baqarah 2:179, the prohibition of intoxicants and gambling protects the mind and social peace Al-Ma'idah 5:90, etiquette regarding entering homes safeguards privacy An-Nur 24:27, and steadfastness in defense protects communal security Al-Anfal 8:15-16.

Attaining deep comprehension of these laws relies on proven spiritual and intellectual means:

  • Learning from grounded scholars: Communities must ensure a dedicated group specializes in religious learning to guide and caution others At-Tawbah 9:122, An-Nahl 16:43.
  • Thoughtful reflection: Contemplating the Quran's blessed verses unlocks divine wisdom Sad 38:29.
  • Diligence and striving: Wholehearted effort attracts divine guidance and special openings Maryam 19:12, Al-Ankabut 29:69.
  • Supplication: Humbly asking Allah for growth in knowledge, just as the Prophet was commanded to pray Ta-Ha 20:114.
  • Abandoning sin: Piety opens the heart to divine knowledge, whereas persistent wrongdoing extinguishes spiritual light Al-Baqarah 2:282, Al-Kahf 18:65, Al-A'raf 7:146.
«تعتبر الأحكام الشرعية مجال من مجالات الفقه والفهم والتدبر لما تضمنته من حكم وفوائد وعلل.»

Obstacles to understanding

From the paper: «

Because understanding is a divine gift, specific moral and spiritual ailments prevent hearts from receiving it:

  • Disbelief and obstinacy: Rejecting faith deprives people of spiritual clarity. Disbelieving forces lack true insight into moral reality and divine accountability, leaving them vulnerable despite their numbers Ta-Ha 20:124, Al-Anfal 8:65, Al-Anfal 8:66.
  • Hypocrisy: Deceitful claims of faith while harboring doubt cause hearts to be stamped with blindness Al-Munafiqun 63:3, Al-Baqarah 2:8-9. Hypocrites wrongly believe they control provisions Al-Munafiqun 63:7, desert assemblies when challenged by the Quran At-Tawbah 9:127, and settle for cowardice and passive neglect At-Tawbah 9:87.
  • Sealed hearts: Persistent arrogance and disdain toward divine signs build thick coverings over the inner faculties, causing people to flee from monotheism as if from a terrifying threat Al-An'am 6:25, Al-Isra 17:46, Al-Kahf 18:57.
  • Linguistic and communicative barriers: Inability to communicate clearly can hinder comprehension, as seen with the isolated folk visited by Dhu al-Qarnayn Al-Kahf 18:93-94. Overcoming this barrier requires patience, wisdom, and adapting speech to the listener's capacity Al-Kahf 18:94.
«وإذا أنزلت سورة قرآنية فيها فضيحة أسرارهم، تعجبوا وتأملوا وتسللوا من مجلس النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وتلفتوا متغامزين قائلين:هل يراكم الرسول أو المؤمنون إذا خرجتم؟!»

The impact of sound understanding on the individual and the community

From the paper: «

Sound comprehension transforms personal conduct and revitalizes entire communities. It fosters individual responsibility, reminding each person that they carry their own burden Al-Isra 17:15, and keeps the believer grounded rather than seduced by fleeting worldly attractions Al-Hadid 57:20.

Furthermore, genuine insight deepens a believer's connection to the universe, recognizing that all creation is united in divine glorification Al-Isra 17:44. It instills peaceful acceptance of divine decree, knowing that whatever is destined cannot be averted An-Nisa 4:78, At-Tawbah 9:51. It reinforces universal human dignity and brotherhood, as all humankind originated from a single soul Al-An'am 6:98, An-Nisa 4:1.

In social and communal life, sound understanding generates courage, resilience, and willingness to stand firm in defending truth Al-Anfal 8:65, Al-Anfal 8:15, while warning against cowardice and apathy At-Tawbah 9:81, At-Tawbah 9:87. It inspires generous spending in charity without anxiety, knowing that the treasuries of the heavens and earth belong exclusively to Allah Al-Munafiqun 63:7, Al-Baqarah 2:261. Finally, it fuels the tireless dissemination of sacred knowledge, building an educated, enlightened community where the knowledgeable are elevated in rank At-Tawbah 9:122, Al-Mujadilah 58:11, Al-Alaq 96:1-5.

Takeaways

  1. Pair Deep Knowledge with Pure Intentions

Sound understanding cannot flourish without a sincere heart. When your goal is solely to please Allah rather than winning debates or showing off, Allah illuminates your judgment and protects you from misinterpreting situations and people.

  2. Guard Your Heart from Spiritual Coverings

Spiritual blindness is not an arbitrary condition; it is the natural consequence of persistent sins, arrogance, and turning away from reminders. Purifying your heart through repentance keeps your inner faculties sharp and receptive to divine truth.

  3. Pause Before Judging Others

Much discord in daily life occurs because people react impulsively to spoken words or actions. Cultivate emotional poise, listen carefully, re-read messages when necessary, and maintain a generous, forgiving opinion of your fellow believers.

  4. Study the Wisdom Behind Divine Commands

Islamic rulings are not arbitrary burdens; they are designed with profound wisdom to safeguard your soul, mind, wealth, and community. Contemplating the benefits of prayer, fasting, and social etiquettes turns daily worship into an inspiring, transformative practice.

  5. Support and Share Sacred Knowledge

Not everyone can become a full-time scholar, but every community must cultivate and honor seekers of knowledge who study deeply and teach others. Even modest efforts to learn and teach your family bring immense barakah into your home.

Reflect

  • When you listen to others during disagreements, are you genuinely seeking to understand their view or merely waiting for your turn to respond?
  • Which sins or worldly distractions might be casting a veil over your heart and dulling your appreciation of the Quran?
  • How can you make your daily recitation of the Quran a time of deep contemplation rather than just a quick reading?
  • In what areas of your life can a deeper awareness of Allah's divine decree bring you emotional calm and freedom from anxiety?

Linguistic meaning

Linguistically, the root letters of fiqh signify the perception and knowledge of something. In early Arabic usage, any true comprehension of a matter was termed fiqh, before the word became predominantly associated with the science of religious rulings due to its exceptional honor and nobility.

«يدل أصل مادة (فقه) على إدراك الشيء والعلم به، تقول: فقهت الحديث أفقهه، وكل علمٍ بشيءٍ فهو فقهٌ، ثم اختص بذلك علم الشريعة، فقيل لكل عالمٍ بالحلال والحرام: فقيهٌ.»

Volume 13

Technical meaning

Technically, al-Jurjani defined fiqh as the knowledge of practical legal rulings derived from their detailed textual proofs. It also denotes arriving at hidden, subtle meanings behind divine laws through reflection, discernment, and systematic derivation, moving from the witnessed evidence to an unwitnessed truth.

How it differs from related terms

Knowledge ('Ilm)
Knowledge is a firm conviction that matches reality or the presence of an idea in the intellect. Fiqh is more specific than knowledge: it is a deep, penetrating knowledge that cuts through obstacles to reach the core and inner essence of the religion.
Comprehension (Fahm)
Fahm refers to accurately conceiving the meaning intended by a speaker, along with the ability to explain and interpret information. The paper notes that fiqh and fahm are synonymous in their general meaning of sound mental conception.
Encompassing Perception (Idrak)
Idrak denotes fully encompassing something in its entirety. Unlike idrak, fiqh does not require total and exhaustive containment of every aspect of a subject to be realized.
Extraction (Istinbat)
Istinbat literally means drawing out hidden water from beneath the earth, and technically means extracting latent rulings from texts through sound methodology. While both require contemplation, istinbat demands greater exertion, rigor, and depth of derivation than general fiqh.
Ignorance (Jahl)
Jahl is the exact opposite of knowledge and understanding. It means either possessing no knowledge at all about a subject, or holding a stubborn conviction that contradicts how things actually are.
