Translation

We shall show them Our signs in every region of the earth and in themselves, until it becomes clear to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that your Lord witnesses everything?

Meaning and reflection

Wisdom

In this profound verse, Allah addresses those who deny the truth of the Quran, making a powerful promise to them. He, the Almighty, declares that He will continuously show them His signs, both in the vastness of the universe and within their very own selves. The purpose is crystal clear: so they may realize, with absolute certainty, that the Quran is indeed the undeniable truth. And then, a question is posed: is Allah's own testimony, as the Witness over all things, not sufficient evidence?

Signs in the Universe

The Quran speaks of "آياتنا في الآفاق" (Our signs in the horizons or the universe). This encompasses everything around us, from the grand scale of the cosmos to the intricate workings of nature. Scholars like al-Qurtubi and Mufti Shafi explain that these signs include the celestial bodies, the sun, moon, and stars, and the cycle of day and night. They point to phenomena like rain, thunder, and lightning, and the creation of mountains, seas, and diverse plant life. The term also refers to historical events, such as the downfall of past nations who rejected divine guidance, and the miraculous spread of Islam and the victories of the Muslims, as mentioned by al-Qurtubi and Wahba al-Zuhayli. Mufti Shafi beautifully adds that this promise extends to all new scientific discoveries, which continue to unveil more of Allah's power and intricate design in the universe until the Day of Judgment. These are all undeniable indicators of a single, all-knowing Creator.

Signs Within Ourselves

Beyond the external world, Allah directs our attention to "وفي أنفسهم" (and within themselves). This invites deep introspection into the human being. Scholars highlight the marvel of our own creation: from a drop of fluid to a complete human, passing through stages of development as mentioned by Ibn al-Jawzi. They describe the exquisite and delicate mechanisms within our bodies, our eyes that perceive vast distances, our ears that distinguish countless sounds, and the complex processes of digestion and bodily functions, as noted by al-Qurtubi and Mufti Shafi. The durability of these "fragile mechanisms" over decades is itself a testament to a miraculous design, not mere chance. This also extends to the changing states of people, from strength to weakness, or the rise and fall of power, demonstrating Allah's control over all human affairs, as mentioned by Wahba al-Zuhayli.

The Unwavering Truth

All these signs, both external and internal, serve one ultimate purpose: "حتى يتبين لهم أنه الحق" (until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth). This "truth" refers to the Quran itself, its divine origin, the message of Islam, and the truthfulness of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, as explained by al-Qurtubi and al-Saadi. It is a promise that clarity will come, either through observation and reason, or through experiencing the consequences of rejection.

Allah's Ultimate Witness

The verse concludes with a profound rhetorical question: "أولم يكف بربك أنه على كل شيء شهيد" (Is it not enough that your Lord is a Witness over all things?). This emphasizes that while Allah provides countless signs in the universe and within ourselves, His own direct testimony is the greatest and most encompassing proof of the truth. He is the ultimate Witness, seeing, knowing, and encompassing everything, providing sufficient evidence for those who are sincere in their search for truth.

A Timeless Lesson

This ayah offers a timeless lesson: truth is not confined to sacred texts alone, but is woven into the fabric of creation and our very being. It calls on us to cultivate a habit of conscious observation, to look at a sunset, a leaf, or the pulse in our own wrist, not as mundane occurrences, but as "آيات" (signs) pointing to the Creator. It urges us to ponder deeply on life's events and our personal journeys. By actively reflecting on these signs, we are invited to move from mere intellectual understanding to a heartfelt conviction that the Quran's message is indeed the ultimate truth, and that Allah's witness is all that truly matters.
