Prophet Solomon (Sulayman, peace be upon him) holds a unique place in the prophetic lineage. Granted a kingdom unlike any before or after him, his story demonstrates how immense power, wealth, and extraordinary gifts can be fully dedicated to the worship of Allah and the service of truth.
Rather than leading him to pride, Solomon's authority deepened his awe of the Creator. From commanding armies of men, jinn, and birds to directing the wind, every blessing served as a constant test of gratitude and spiritual vigilance.
Through his life, the Quran teaches you how true leadership blends strict justice with compassion, sharp discernment with consultation, and magnificent material means with a heart constantly turning back to Allah.

Introduction to Solomon
From the paper: «التعريف بسليمان عليه السلام»
Prophet Solomon (Sulayman, peace be upon him) was the noble son of Prophet David (Dawud). Historians trace his lineage back to Judah, son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham. The Quran establishes his direct filial connection to David through three distinct textual proofs. In Saba 34:13, Allah addresses the family of David, including Solomon, commanding them to act in gratitude. In Sad 38:30, Allah mentions gifting Solomon to David as an honorable blessing, mirroring how righteous children are gifted to the prophets Maryam 19:5, Maryam 19:49, Al-Anbiya 21:90, and Ash-Shura 42:49. Furthermore, the Quran explicitly states that Solomon inherited from David An-Naml 27:16, receiving his father's profound knowledge, prophetic calling, and righteous authority alongside what he was already given Al-An'am 6:84, As-Saffat 37:77.
Chronologically, Solomon lived alongside his father during his youth. He sat in his father's judicial assemblies, offering sharp discernment on legal rulings, such as the case of sheep straying into cultivated fields Al-Anbiya 21:78. After David passed away, Solomon fully assumed the mantle of leadership and prophecy. Across the Quran, Solomon is mentioned 17 times across seven distinct surahs, underscoring his vital status as both an exemplary ruler and a dedicated worshiper of Allah Al-Baqarah 2:102.

Virtues of Solomon
From the paper: «فضائل سليمان عليه السلام»
Allah granted Solomon extraordinary spiritual and intellectual virtues. First, he was endowed with specialized knowledge beyond prophethood itself, including judicial expertise and understanding the languages of birds and animals An-Naml 27:15. Second, he was granted the inheritance of prophethood, royal governance, and religious wisdom from David An-Naml 27:16. Scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that this inheritance was of sacred wisdom and authority, not worldly money, as prophets do not leave material inheritance, a usage echoed in verses describing inheritors of scripture Al-A'raf 7:169, Fatir 35:32, and Ash-Shura 42:14.
Third, he was taught the speech of birds, a blessing he openly proclaimed to honor Allah's manifest favor An-Naml 27:16. Fourth, Solomon was defined by profound gratitude. When he understood the ant's warning, he pleaded for inspiration to maintain unwavering thankfulness An-Naml 27:19. When the Queen of Sheba's throne appeared instantly, he saw it strictly as a test of gratitude An-Naml 27:40.
Fifth, Solomon possessed exceptional discernment (fahm), which is deeper than general knowledge. This was illustrated in his youth when sheep destroyed a neighbor's crops Al-Anbiya 21:78-79: while David awarded the flock directly as compensation, Solomon ruled that the crop owner should benefit from the sheep's milk and wool while the shepherd restored the damaged land. Finally, Allah praised him as an awwāb, one who constantly returns to his Lord in devotion, prayer, and loving submission Sad 38:30.

Characteristics of Solomon's kingdom
From the paper: «خصائص ملك سليمان عليه السلام»
Every prophet is granted proofs of their mission, and Solomon was endowed with miracles woven into his governance that were never matched by anyone after him. First, Allah subjugated the jinn and devils to him. Rebellious devils were forced to dive deep into the sea for pearls or build fortresses and palaces Al-Anbiya 21:82, Sad 38:37, while defiant ones were bound in iron chains Sad 38:38, with Allah directly protecting Solomon from their harm. Believing jinn crafted sanctuaries, artistic representations, enormous food basins, and anchored cooking pots Saba 34:12-13.
Second, the wind was subjected to his command. It blew fiercely when swift travel was required Al-Anbiya 21:81 and gently according to his comfort Sad 38:36, traversing a month's journey in a morning and another month's journey in an evening Saba 34:12. Al-Shanqiti explains that it carried him anywhere on earth when setting out, and returned him safely to the blessed land of the Levant Al-Anbiya 21:81, Sad 38:36.
Third, Allah caused a spring of molten copper to flow freely for him like water Saba 34:12. Fourth, he possessed vast, organized armies composed of men, jinn, and birds An-Naml 27:17. A mighty jinn offered to bring the distant throne of Sheba before Solomon could rise from his seat An-Naml 27:39, while a knowledgeable man from his council brought it in the blink of an eye through divine prayer An-Naml 27:40. Historians report that Solomon became king between the ages of twelve and twenty-two, ruling the Children of Israel in Palestine and the Levant. The claim that he ruled every corner of the earth lacks evidence, as evidenced by the distant kingdom of Sheba being initially unknown to him until reported by a bird Al-Anbiya 21:81.

Events from the life of Solomon
From the paper: «مواقف من سيرة سليمان عليه السلام»
The Quran highlights three illuminating episodes from Solomon's life. The first occurred when his magnificent, orderly army marched through the Valley of the Ants An-Naml 27:17-18. An ant warned its community to enter their dwellings lest Solomon and his troops crush them unaware An-Naml 27:18. Hearing this, Solomon smiled in admiration at the ant's concern and excused his soldiers, supplicating to Allah for lasting gratitude, righteous deeds, and admission into the company of the righteous An-Naml 27:19.
The second episode unfolded when Solomon inspected the birds and noticed the hoopoe was missing without leave An-Naml 27:20. Showing resolute leadership, he vowed to discipline or execute the bird unless it presented a clear justification An-Naml 27:21. Returning swiftly, the hoopoe announced verified news from the wealthy kingdom of Sheba, ruled by a woman with a magnificent throne, whose people were deceived by Satan into worshiping the sun An-Naml 27:22-26. Rather than acting impulsively, Solomon stated he would test the bird's truthfulness by sending a letter demanding their submission to monotheism An-Naml 27:27-28.
The third episode centers on the Queen of Sheba receiving Solomon's noble letter An-Naml 27:29-30. She consulted her chieftains, who expressed readiness for war An-Naml 27:32-33, but she wisely preferred diplomacy, noting how kings destroy lands they conquer An-Naml 27:34. She sent costly gifts, which Solomon rejected completely, refusing to barter faith for gold An-Naml 27:35-37. When she traveled toward him, Solomon had her throne transported through a servant endowed with sacred knowledge An-Naml 27:38-40. Testing her intellect, he altered the throne's appearance; she recognized it cautiously, saying, 'It looks as if it were it' An-Naml 27:41-42. Entering a glass palace built over flowing water, she mistook it for deep water and lifted her skirts An-Naml 27:44. Recognizing Solomon's divine mandate, she submitted alongside him to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds An-Naml 27:44.

Misconceptions about Solomon
From the paper: «شبهات حول سليمان عليه السلام»
Unfounded myths have often clouded the Quranic depiction of Solomon. The first misconception involves the trial where a lifeless body was cast upon his throne, after which he turned in repentance Sad 38:35. Fabricated tales claim a devil disguised himself as Solomon, stole his signet ring, and ruled unjustly. Scholars like Qadi Iyad firmly reject this, noting that prophets are divinely protected from having devils seize their prophetic authority. The sound explanation, supported by an authentic prophetic report, is that Solomon intended to father many sons to strive for Allah's cause but forgot to say 'if Allah wills,' resulting in only a single, stillborn half-child brought to his seat, which served as his trial.
The second misconception arises around the thoroughbred horses displayed before him until sunset Sad 38:31-33. Some claimed he became distracted, missed the afternoon prayer out of forgetfulness, and slaughtered the horses in anger. Scholars like al-Tabari reject this as unfitting for a prophet, noting that innocent animals cannot be blamed or mutilated. The linguistically sound meaning is that Solomon stroked the necks and legs of these warhorses out of affection, preparing them for the cause of Allah.
The third misconception was the Jewish claim that Solomon was merely a sorcerer who mastered the wind. The Quran decisively exonerates him, declaring that Solomon never disbelieved, but rather the devils disbelieved by teaching sorcery Al-Baqarah 2:102. The Quran explicitly ranks him among the inspired, guided messengers who received revelation, scripture, and divine judgment An-Nisa 4:163, Al-An'am 6:84, Al-An'am 6:89.

The death of Solomon
From the paper: «موت سليمان عليه السلام»
Solomon passed away while overseeing the jinn engaged in grueling labor Saba 34:14. He had tasked them with renovating the sanctuary of Bayt al-Maqdis (the Holy House). As his appointed time arrived, Allah caused his soul to be taken while he remained standing, leaning upright upon his staff. The jinn continued their toil under the impression that he was watching over them, unaware that he had died.
Allah concealed his death for two vital reasons. First, it allowed the jinn to finish the vital construction work on the sacred mosque. Second, it demolished the widespread falsehood that jinn possess knowledge of the unseen. For a prolonged period, estimated by some commentators to be up to a year, the jinn remained in humiliating servitude until a tiny woodboring beetle slowly gnawed through his wooden staff. When the staff broke, Solomon's body fell to the ground Saba 34:14.
At that decisive moment, the truth became completely manifest: had the jinn truly possessed knowledge of the unseen, they would never have remained enduring such painful, degrading toil Saba 34:14. Historians record that Solomon lived fifty-two years, ruling his kingdom with exemplary justice for forty years.

Solomon's governance of his kingdom
From the paper: «تدبير سليمان عليه السلام لملكه»
Solomon governed his realm strictly in accordance with divine law. Domestically, his policy prioritized spiritual and public welfare: constructing and renewing mosques like the Sacred Mosque of Jerusalem Saba 34:13, creating immense cooking cauldrons to feed his subjects Saba 34:13, harnessing copper and ocean diving for resources Al-Anbiya 21:82, Saba 34:12, establishing judicial councils, and conducting military reviews Sad 38:31. He disciplined his troops with compassion An-Naml 27:17, held public displays of thankfulness to set an example for his followers An-Naml 27:40, and personally inspected the humblest of his subjects, noticing even a missing hoopoe An-Naml 27:20.
In foreign affairs, Solomon utilized principled diplomacy backed by decisive resolve. He dispatched official correspondence calling foreign rulers to monotheism An-Naml 27:28, trained his messengers in royal etiquette, and refused bribes that sought to compromise faith An-Naml 27:36. When confronting potential adversaries, he utilized intelligence gathering, sought counsel, verified facts, and mobilized capable subordinates An-Naml 27:38, An-Naml 27:41-42.
His life provides profound spiritual lessons. True knowledge is infinitely superior to mere wealth An-Naml 27:16. Blessings must always be tied to gratitude An-Naml 27:19, An-Naml 27:40. Divine worship and repentance must precede worldly requests Sad 38:30, Sad 38:35. Leaders must balance firmness toward negligence with fair hearings for legitimate excuses An-Naml 27:21, An-Naml 27:27, and genuine believers seek excuses for others, just as the humble ant sought an excuse for Solomon's army An-Naml 27:18.

Takeaways
Tie Every Blessing to Active Thanksgiving
When Solomon witnessed his immense blessings and extraordinary favors, he immediately asked Allah to inspire him to continuous gratitude An-Naml 27:19, An-Naml 27:40. Recognize every talent, resource, and comfort in your life as a divine test, and anchor your blessings by thanking Allah and spending them in His pleasure.
Balance Firm Accountability with Fairness
As a leader, Solomon noticed even a small bird missing from ranks and demanded strict discipline, yet he refused to judge before hearing its excuse An-Naml 27:21, An-Naml 27:27. In your family or workplace, maintain clear boundaries and high standards while always extending a fair hearing to those who falter.
Never Compromise Core Faith for Material Gain
When the Queen of Sheba attempted to appease Solomon with lavish treasures, he rejected the gifts completely, refusing to let wealth overshadow the call to worship Allah alone An-Naml 27:36. Never let worldly incentives, social flattery, or financial offers dilute your religious principles.
Seek Excuses for Others
Even a tiny ant presumed that Solomon's army would only harm them unintentionally An-Naml 27:18. As a believer, train yourself to assume good intentions about fellow Muslims and actively seek reasonable excuses for their shortcomings.
Cultivate the Habit of Constant Return to Allah
Allah praised Solomon as awwāb, meaning one who continually returns to Him through love, remembrance, prayer, and repentance Sad 38:30. In moments of triumph and moments of trial alike, make turning back to Allah your default spiritual state.
Reflect
- When Allah grants you success, do you see it as a personal achievement or as a divine test of gratitude?
- How can you balance strict discipline with mercy and a willingness to listen when managing your children, students, or team?
- Are there worldly compromises or flattering offers you are tempted to accept at the expense of your values?
- In what ways can you emulate the ant's charity of heart by making excuses for those who accidentally inconvenience you?
