At a glance
Water is the cornerstone of all physical life and one of the clearest signs of divine wisdom in the Quran. The Quran mentions water dozens of times, tracing its existence from before the creation of the heavens and the earth, when the Throne was upon the water, to its decisive role in the fashioning of living creatures, plants, and human beings.
Far beyond serving basic physiological needs, water is presented in the Quran as an instrument of mercy, divine trial, purification, and spiritual teaching. It revives dead soil, cleanses the believer before standing in prayer, and provides parables that illustrate how divine revelation settles into human hearts.
Water also acts as a profound moral sign. Throughout history, Allah has employed water both as an abundance to reward righteous communities and as an overwhelming force of retribution against tyrant nations. In the life to come, water forms the eternal bliss of Paradise and the severe torment of the Fire.
Key verses
- Al-Hijr 15:22: Allah sends fecundating winds to bring down rain that satisfies people and lands, reminding humanity that only He preserves and controls its reservoirs.
- An-Nahl 16:10: Rain is sent down from the sky as a pure, sweet drink for human beings and as the vital source of grazing lands for their livestock.
- Al-Mu'minun 23:18: Water descends in precise, calculated measure to settle safely within the earth, though Allah maintains full power to take it away.
- Al-Mursalat 77:27: High, towering mountains are directly linked to providing sweet, refreshing water by aiding cloud formation, rainfall, and natural filtration.

Status of water
From the paper: «مكانة الماء»
The Quran establishes that water preceded the creation of the universe. When Allah created the heavens and the earth, His Throne was over the water Hud 11:7, marking water and the Throne as the very beginning of the created realm. From this primordial substance, Allah began human life through clay mixed with water As-Sajdah 32:7.
Every living creature is dependent on water for its existence Al-Anbiya 21:30. Scholars explain that this either points to reproductive fluid (nutfah) or the well-known fluid that directly builds bodies, cells, and nourishes the food chain. Humans themselves are crafted from fluid Al-Furqan 25:54, Al-Qiyamah 75:37-39, described as a despised or humble fluid As-Sajdah 32:8 and an emitted fluid At-Tariq 86:5-7 that surges rapidly into the womb.
In living organisms, water comprises the majority of bodily weight, regulating temperature, dissolving nutrients, and enabling waste removal. Plant life similarly depends on water; dormant, motionless soil trembles and swells with vibrant, beautiful pairs of vegetation once rain descends Al-Hajj 22:5, Fussilat 41:39. Every creeping creature walking on its belly, on two legs, or on four shares this single common origin An-Nur 24:45, revealing the intentional design, unified origin, and deliberate sovereignty of the Creator.

Water sources
From the paper: «مصادر المياه»
The Quran repeatedly directs hearts to reflect on the two main reservoirs of water: the sky and the earth. Rain descending from the sky is a recurring reminder of divine capability and grace Al-Baqarah 2:22, Ibrahim 14:32. Rising vapors from seas, rivers, and soil condense in atmospheric layers, falling back down to revive barren soil with vital provisions and varied vegetation Al-Baqarah 2:164, Al-An'am 6:99.
This downpour is sent with fecundating winds to serve as a drink for humans and animals, and its ultimate storage lies entirely in divine hands Al-Hijr 15:22. Allah makes this heavenly gift sweet and palatable An-Nahl 16:10, causing parched fields to turn green Al-Hajj 22:63 and lodging it deep within the ground in precise measure Al-Mu'minun 23:18.
From the earth itself, Allah brings forth water and pasturage An-Nazi'at 79:31. Emerging through gushing springs and running rivers, this water sustains human and animal food, fuel, and mineral production Abasa 80:25-32, Al-Waqi'ah 56:71-72. Through divine wisdom, even vast salty seas evaporate to form clouds, later returning to land as freshwater springs and rivers.

Descriptions of water
From the paper: «أوصاف الماء»
The Quran characterizes water with several precise descriptions that invite reverence and gratitude:
- Pure and purifying (tahur): Heavenly rain is free of contaminants, cleansing both physical impurities and spiritual distress Al-Furqan 25:48, Al-Anfal 8:11.
- Abundant (ghadaq): Plentiful water granted as a blessing and expansion of provision when communities hold firmly to righteous paths Al-Jinn 72:16, Al-A'raf 7:96, Nuh 71:10-12.
- Sweet and palatable (furat): Refreshing water filtered through natural layers and aided by towering mountain peaks Al-Mursalat 77:27.
- Salty and bitter (milh ujaj): The unpalatable marine waters created to preserve global air and maritime ecosystems, separated from freshwater systems by natural barriers Al-Furqan 25:53, Fatir 35:12.
- Pouring vigorously (thajjaj): Heavy, rushing rain poured from rain-bearing clouds to yield grains and thick gardens An-Naba 78:14.
- Flowing and accessible (ma'in): Clear water bubbling openly from springs, which no human agency could produce if Allah caused groundwater to sink away Al-Mulk 67:30, Al-Mulk 67:20.

Benefits of water
From the paper: «فوائد الماء»
Water delivers both worldly and spiritual benefits throughout daily existence. Physically, it satisfies thirst for people, livestock, and farmlands An-Nahl 16:10, Al-Hijr 15:22, Al-Mursalat 77:27, while sprouting diverse crops, grains, and fruits varying in color, scent, and taste Ta-Ha 20:53, Al-An'am 6:99, An-Naba 78:14-15.
Spiritually, water is essential for ritual worship. Before offering prayer, believers are commanded to perform minor ablution (wudu') by washing the face, hands to the elbows, wiping the head, and washing the feet to the ankles Al-Ma'idah 5:6. It also serves major ritual purification (ghusl) after sexual defilement to cover the entire body An-Nisa 4:43, Al-Ma'idah 5:6. Beyond inner worship, water is utilized for outward cleanliness, removing impurities from clothing, which completes and mirrors inner spiritual rectitude Al-Muddaththir 74:4.

Blessing and retribution
From the paper: «الإنعام والانتقام»
In worldly life, water sustains human civilizations, serves as a medical remedy through cool washes and drinks as granted to Ayyub Sad 38:41-42, and enables maritime trade, fishing, and ornaments Al-An'am 6:141, An-Nahl 16:14.
Yet when nations reject truth, that same gentle blessing becomes an instrument of divine retribution. The people of Nuh were consumed when torrential gates of the sky opened and springs burst from the earth, Nuh 71:26-27, Al-Qamar 54:11-12. Fir'awn and his pursuing armies drowned in the parted sea Al-Qasas 28:38, An-Nazi'at 79:24, Ash-Shu'ara 26:61-66. The people of Saba', having tired of their comfortable gardens and safe travel, had their grand dam ruined by the devastating flood of al-'Arim Saba 34:15-17.
In the hereafter, water forms the eternal delight of the righteous through endless gushing fountains, non-stagnant rivers, pure drinks, and streams like Salsabil Al-Insan 76:6, Muhammad 47:15, Ar-Rahman 55:50, Ar-Rahman 55:66, Al-Waqi'ah 56:31, Al-Insan 76:21, Al-Insan 76:18. For the people of the Fire, water transforms into scalding boiling fluids (hamim), dark discharges (ghassaq), pus (sadid), and molten metal (muhl) that tears their innards and scorches their faces Al-An'am 6:70, Muhammad 47:15, Sad 38:57, An-Naba 78:25, Ibrahim 14:16, Al-Kahf 18:29, Al-A'raf 7:50.
«خلق تعالى الماء نعمة لحياة الكائنات الحية، فكان شرابًا لهم وكان سببًا في إنبات الزرع، وجعله سبحانه في الدنيا إنعامًا على أقوام، وإهلاكًا لآخرين، وجعله في الآخرة عذابًا لأهل النار، ونعيمًا لأهل الجنة.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Water in Quranic parables
From the paper: «الماء في المثل القرآني»
The Quran uses the dynamics of water to clarify subtle spiritual realities:
- The Transient Dunya: Worldly life resembles rain that makes the earth bloom into lush greenery; just as its owners think they control it, a divine command flattens it overnight as if it had never flourished Yunus 10:24.
- Divine Revelation: Heavenly guidance is like rain pouring into valleys according to their capacities, stirring up transient foam. Falsehood resembles that useless surface scum that soon vanishes, while true benefit remains firmly planted in the earth Ar-Ra'd 13:17.
- The State of Hypocrites: Hypocrites are likened to people caught in a dark, thundering rainstorm with flashes of lightning, plugging their ears in panic against divine warnings Al-Baqarah 2:19. Just like water, the hypocrite has no fixed shape, conforms to whatever container holds him, flows downward, and cannot be grasped securely.
- The Deceit of Disbelief: The deeds of those who reject faith are like layered darkness in a deep, vast sea, covered by wave upon wave beneath dark clouds, leaving them entirely without light An-Nur 24:40.
«كذلك يقع في المعادن التي تذاب؛ لتصاغ منها حلية كالذهب والفضة، أو آنية أو آلة نافعة للحياة كالحديد والرصاص، فإن الخبث يطفو وقد يحجب المعدن الأصيل، ولكنه بعد خبثٌ يذهب ويبقى المعدن في نقاء.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Miraculous aspects of water
From the paper: «لمسات إعجازية في الماء»
Quranic verses describe atmospheric and environmental phenomena with remarkable exactness. The water cycle is powered by the burning heat of the sun An-Naba 78:13 and propelled by winds that transport and fertilize vapor clouds Al-Hijr 15:22.
Water settles underground for long periods without decaying or spoiling, stored in vast natural aquifers that replenish sweet surface springs Al-Hijr 15:22, Az-Zumar 39:21. This entire cycle is governed by precise, calculated laws rather than random chance Al-Mu'minun 23:18, Az-Zukhruf 43:11.
Furthermore, the Quran highlights the natural barrier (barzakh) preventing mingling at the confluence of sweet rivers and salty seas Al-Furqan 25:53, and notes the unique role of towering mountain ranges in cloud formation and water purification Al-Mursalat 77:27.
In meteorology, the Quran accurately outlines how cumulonimbus clouds form: winds gently drive clouds together, stack them into mountain-like vertical towers, and discharge hail and torrential rain amidst brilliant flashes of electrical lightning An-Nur 24:43.
«وتشبيه الآية الكريمة هذه السحب بالجبال لا يدركه إلا من ركب الطائرة وعلت به فوق السحب أو بينها، فإنه سيدهش لدقة الوصف؛ إذ يجد مشهد الجبال حقا بضخامتها ومساقطها وارتفاعاتها وانخفاضاتها.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Takeaways
Recognizing Dependence on Divine Sustenance
Every drop of water consumed by living creatures descends and settles solely by Allah's power Al-Mu'minun 23:18. Recognizing this continuous vulnerability turns ordinary drinking into conscious gratitude.
Connecting Righteousness to Material Blessings
The Quran demonstrates that moral integrity and seeking forgiveness bring down abundant, beneficial rains and societal ease Al-Jinn 72:16, Nuh 71:10-12.
Purifying Outer State to Mirror Inner Devotion
Using pure water for ablution and washing clothes before standing in prayer connects external physical cleanliness with sincere inner repentance Al-Ma'idah 5:6, Al-Muddaththir 74:4.
Reflecting on the Fleeting Nature of Worldly Wealth
Just as lush fields nourished by rain can suddenly perish, worldly success can vanish instantly, reminding believers to direct their hopes toward the lasting hereafter Yunus 10:24.
Reflect
- When you drink a glass of fresh water, do you pause to consider how helpless humanity would be if Allah caused the springs to dry up?
- How can you make your daily physical ablutions a conscious renewal of your inner spiritual purity?
- Looking at the parable of rain stirring up foam, are you letting enduring Quranic truth settle in your heart while discarding surface doubts?

Linguistic meaning
Linguistically, the root of ma' is m-w-h, designating a fluid substance whose diminutive is muwayh; it conveys pouring, fluid coating, and youthful radiance.
Technical meaning
Technically, water is a subtle, transparent, fluid substance that opposes fire through its coldness and moisture, quenching thirst and upholding all physical life.

How it differs from related terms
- المطر Rain
- Rain is a specific category of water that pours down exclusively from the sky, whereas water is a general term covering both heavenly rain, terrestrial water, and reproductive fluids.
- النار Fire
- Fire is the physical and elemental opposite of water; water quenches fire through its coldness and moisture, making them mutually exclusive opposites that do not combine.
- اليبس Dryness
- Dryness describes a state or location where moisture has disappeared or vanished; water brings dampness and moisture, meaning the presence of one inherently negates the other.
