Meaning and reflection
Wording
This verse, part of a passage marveling at Allah's creation, describes how humanity's lineage continues after the initial creation of Adam. Allah is speaking directly, reminding us of the profound yet humble origins of our existence. It follows the previous verse that spoke of creating the first human from clay, now focusing on the subsequent generations.
The Flow of Generations
The verse begins with "ثُمَّ جَعَلَ نَسْلَهُۥ" (then He made his progeny). The word نَسْلُهُ (naslahu), meaning 'his progeny' or 'his descendants,' indicates the continuation of humankind after Adam. Scholars like al-Zamakhshari and Ibn Ashur explain that this word comes from a root meaning to 'separate' or 'emerge,' just as a child separates from its parent. This highlights the process of reproduction, ensuring that life extends from one generation to the next, a deliberate design by Allah.
From a Humble Essence
The verse continues, "مِن سُلَٰلَةٍۢ مِّن مَّآءٍۢ مَّهِينٍۢ" (from an extract of despised water). The term سُلَٰلَةٍ (sulalah) is crucial here. It means an 'extract' or 'essence,' and scholars such as al-Jalalayn and al-Razi clarify it refers to the *nutfah*, the drop of fluid from which a human is formed. Ibn Ashur elaborates that it is called an 'extract' because it is specifically the part of the fluid that separates and contributes to the formation of the embryo.
The description "مِّن مَّآءٍۢ مَّهِينٍۢ" (min maa’in maheen), meaning 'from despised water,' further emphasizes this humble beginning. مَهِينٍ (maheen) describes something insignificant, weak, or held in low regard. This specific choice of words serves a powerful purpose: to make us reflect on the contrast between the seemingly unremarkable origin (a small, weak, even "despised" fluid) and the magnificent, complex being that develops from it. It's a profound reminder of Allah's immense power and artistry, capable of creating life's intricate wonders from the simplest, most unassuming starting point. This linguistic emphasis on humility in our origin is meant to instill awe and gratitude for Allah's intricate design and boundless capability.
