At a glance

In everyday speech, manliness is frequently confused with physical masculinity, worldly status, or dominance. The Quran presents a far deeper vision. True manliness, or rujūlah, is not a passive biological state that every male inherits automatically; rather, it is a spiritual and moral achievement described through qualities of steadfast faith, accountability, integrity, and protective care for others.

The Quran honors true men as those whose commercial pursuits never distract them from remembering Allah, who fulfill their solemn pledges even unto death, and who step forward with courage when truth must be defended. It pairs physical strength with spiritual gentleness, and leadership with economic sacrifice and moral duty.

Studying the Quranic concept of manliness provides both men and women with an elevated model of character. It shifts the measure of a person away from external wealth, power, and image toward enduring virtues: reverence of Allah, purity of heart, selfless service to the community, and steadfast resolve in times of adversity.

Key verses

  1. An-Nur 24:36-37: The paper explains that true men prioritize worship, prayer, and charity over all earthly commerce, constantly conscious of the Day when hearts and eyes will turn over.
  2. Al-Ahzab 33:23: This verse describes genuine men as those who proved utterly truthful to their covenant with Allah, standing firm in hardship without altering their commitment.
  3. Yusuf 12:109: The paper highlights that divine prophethood was entrusted exclusively to men from town populations, embodying human perfection and full social engagement.
  4. Hud 11:78: Prophet Lut's call for a single discerning, righteous man shows that true manliness requires having the moral courage to stop public indecency and injustice.
  5. At-Tawbah 9:108: The paper notes that Allah praises the men of the founding mosque of Quba' because they genuinely love internal and external purity, earning His divine love.
  6. Al-Baqarah 2:27: The paper cites this verse to show the severe condemnation of breaking pledges, emphasizing that covenant-breaking opposes the very essence of Quranic manliness.

Status of manliness

From the paper: «منزلة الرجولة»

The Quran presents manliness as a divine favor that calls for deep gratitude. In the dialogue between the two garden owners, the believer reminds his ungrateful companion of Allah's blessing in fashioning him into an upright man Al-Kahf 18:37-38. Manliness carries specific legal and social distinctions, including primary responsibility for guardianship, inheritance shares, community arbitration, and family maintenance Al-Baqarah 2:282, An-Nisa 4:1, An-Nisa 4:7.

This station culminates in Allah's choice of messengers. Every prophet sent by Allah was a human man Yusuf 12:109, An-Nahl 16:43, Al-Anbiya 21:7. This divine choice reflects two profound realities. First, prophethood required living among people, walking through marketplaces, earning a livelihood, and providing an accessible, living human example Al-Furqan 25:7-8, Al-Furqan 25:20. Had angels been sent, people could not have related to them or taken them as practical models Al-An'am 6:9, Ali 'Imran 3:164.

Second, the prophets exemplified the pinnacle of manliness through perfect moral conduct, profound reverence for Allah, resilience against persecution, and steadfast leadership. Classical scholars noted that while women reached the pinnacle of spiritual truthfulness (siddīqiyyah), as seen in the noble status of Maryam Al-Ma'idah 5:75, the specific public burdens of legislative prophethood were assigned to men Yusuf 12:109.

Devotional attributes

From the paper: «ثانيًا: صفات عبادية»

Quranic manliness is forged in devotion. The paper identifies primary worship qualities that define true men in the divine text:

  • Awe of the Day of Reckoning: True men are deeply mindful of the Day when hearts and eyes will convulse An-Nur 24:36-37, Al-Insan 76:7. This fear is not paralyzing; it is a positive motive that drives them to obey divine commands, avoid sin, and restrain personal whims An-Nazi'at 79:40-41, Al-Anbiya 21:90. Even when performing good deeds, their hearts tremble with hope and awe lest their deeds fall short Al-Mu'minun 23:60.
  • Freedom from Material Distraction: They conduct business, trade, and work in the market, yet neither buying nor selling ever diverts them from the remembrance of Allah, establishing regular prayer, or giving zakah An-Nur 24:37.
  • Love of Purity: Allah praises the community of the early mosque because it contains men who genuinely love to purify themselves At-Tawbah 9:108. Their dedication to physical cleanliness reflects their internal cleansing from sins, hypocrisy, and malice.
  • Building and Frequenting Mosques: True men establish houses of worship upon sincerity and fear of Allah rather than division or hypocrisy At-Tawbah 9:18, At-Tawbah 9:108-109. They inhabit them morning and evening in continuous glorification and prayer An-Nur 24:36-37.
  • Fulfilling Zakah: They overcome inherent greed by paying obligatory charity, purifying their wealth, and sustaining the vulnerable An-Nur 24:37.

Moral attributes

From the paper: «ثالثًا: صفات أخلاقية»

At the moral core of Quranic manliness stands unwavering fidelity to promises. Allah singles out a distinguished group of believers as true men specifically because they remained faithful to the covenant they made with Him Al-Ahzab 33:23. They stood resolute alongside the Prophet, never flinching during battle, wavering under temptation, or retreating in fear.

Some of these men fulfilled their vow through martyrdom, while others waited steadfastly, never altering their resolve in the slightest Al-Ahzab 33:23. In stark contrast, the Quran condemns hypocrites and corrupt individuals who readily break their treaties, sever ties that Allah ordered to be joined, and cause ruin on earth Al-Baqarah 2:26-27, Al-Ahzab 33:15.

Fulfilling covenants is not merely a social courtesy; the Quran elevates it as an essential proof of faith, true human decency, and righteousness Al-Baqarah 2:177, Al-Isra 17:34. Society cannot experience security, trust, or mutual peace unless covenants are sacredly honored.

The paper concludes that manliness is emphatically not defined by wealth, social acclaim, athletic physique, fashion, or corporate titles. True manliness consists of firm ethical principles, self-discipline, selfless sacrifice, and speaking words of truth purely for the pleasure of Allah.

«والوفاء بالعهد خلق من أخلاق الإسلام، وسمة من سماته التي يحرص عليها، ويكررها القرآن كثيرًا، ويعدها آية الإيمان، وآية الآدمية وآية الإحسان.»

Manliness and responsibility

From the paper: «الرجولة والمسؤولية»

The Quran links manliness directly to carrying duty and protective authority (qiwāmah). Allah declares that men are caretakers and guardians of women based on two foundational factors: the natural strengths and capacities Allah distributed among them, and the financial wealth men are required to expend on their households An-Nisa 4:34.

Qiwāmah is not a license for domination; it is an obligation of leadership, material expenditure, physical protection, and emotional shelter. A man bears the duty of earning a lawful livelihood, providing housing, food, and clothing, and guiding the household toward stability Al-Baqarah 2:233, At-Talaq 65:7.

This outward leadership does not diminish the spiritual rank of women before Allah. The ultimate standard of honor with Allah is piety, not gender Al-Hujurat 49:13. A righteous, devout woman holds a far higher station with Allah than a man deficient in taqwa Al-Hujurat 49:13.

Because leadership requires bearing public burdens, decisive judgment, and emotional equilibrium under strain, public governance and prayer leadership over mixed congregations are assigned to men. The paper notes that leading communal prayer reflects a sacred station of guidance that aligns with public responsibility, emphasizing that divine law assigns distinct, complementary roles to preserve the family and wider society.

Manliness in times of adversity

From the paper: «الرجولة في الشدائد»

Severe tests reveal the presence of authentic manliness. The Quran highlights multiple shining examples of men rising to critical occasions:

  • Courage in Striving: True men dedicate life and wealth for Allah. When the Israelites feared entering the promised land, two god-fearing men stepped forward with bold faith, encouraging their people to trust in Allah and advance Al-Ma'idah 5:23.
  • Championing Truth and Protecting the Innocent: A courageous believer ran from the far edge of the city to warn Musa of a plot against his life, advising him on how to escape safely Al-Qasas 28:20-21. Similarly, the believer in Surah Ya-Sin crossed the city urgently to support the messengers and call his people to faith Ya-Sin 36:20.
  • Denouncing Public Indecency: When his town attempted to violate his angelic guests, Prophet Lut cried out for a single upright, discerning man who possessed the moral clarity to halt public evil Hud 11:78.

Conversely, the paper identifies critical factors that erode manliness within individuals and societies: weakening of faith, abandonment of the mosque, detachment from the Quran, inverted moral values where triviality is celebrated, following corrupt role models, and indulgence in shameless sins Al-A'raf 7:81, An-Nur 24:36.

«ومن صفات الرجولة التي ذكرها القرآن الكريم الوقوف في وجه المنكر ومحاربته بكل صوره وأشكاله.»

Takeaways

  1. Build your character on internal faith, not external image

True manliness is neither muscular build nor social prestige; it is rooted in deep awareness of Allah, frequent prayer, and fulfilling your financial obligations without being consumed by worldly transactions.

  2. Regard your word and commitments as sacred trusts

Emulate the faithful believers praised in the Quran by keeping your covenants in both private and public dealings, enduring inconvenience or hardship rather than betraying your pledged word.

  3. Exercise authority as protective service and sacrifice

If you hold guardianship or leadership in your home, view it not as privilege or entitlement, but as an ongoing duty to provide financially, guide morally, and shelter those under your care.

  4. Cultivate the courage to intervene when truth is threatened

Follow the example of the righteous men who rushed from across their cities to prevent injustice, offer sincere counsel, and stand for moral rectitude when others stay passive.

  5. Protect your household from the causes of moral erosion

Safeguard your spiritual resilience by staying attached to the daily life of the mosque, reflecting consistently upon the Quran, and selecting upright companions.

Reflect

  • In what ways have modern cultural definitions of masculinity distracted you from the Quran's spiritual criteria of manliness?
  • When work and financial concerns press upon your schedule, what practical steps can you take to ensure your devotion to Allah remains uncompromised?
  • Are there covenants, promises, or family obligations in your life right now that require greater steadfastness and integrity from you?
  • How can you develop the moral courage to speak truth and defend the vulnerable in your everyday community settings?

الذّكر The male
While al-dhakar primarily designates biological sex in contrast to the female, it can occasionally be used metaphorically as an adjective to denote sharpness, courage, and resolve.
الذكورة Maleness
Dhukūrah denotes the biological category of sex and is predominantly a physical distinction, whereas rujūlah serves equally as both a designation of sex and an earned moral description.
الفتوّة Chivalrous youthfulness
Futuwwah specifically highlights the energy, sharpness of intellect, and eager assistance associated with noble youth, while rujūlah encompasses the full maturity of faith, steadfastness, and heroic responsibility.
المروءة Personal dignity
Murū'ah focuses on the refined manners and inward decorum of the soul that generate praiseworthy conduct, whereas rujūlah places greater emphasis on strength, endurance, and decisive action.
الأنثى The female
Al-unthā is the direct biological counterpart to the male, and when applied metaphorically in classical language, it denotes delicacy or softness rather than the vigor associated with manliness.
